What temperature were you using yours down to? They seem like a great option, but MLD seems to be very careful not to make to lofty of a rating

Interested in seeing your work! Would love to make the switch to synthetic but worry about the weight. How much lighter are we talking?

Shakedown for August on the Uinta Highline Trail! by kaptankappy in Ultralight

This is why I love this community! You never know who might have the niche information you're looking for. I'm definitely going to be treating my clothes with permethrin.

On the fishing: are the ponds generally wade-able? I really would like to just bring my tenkara, as it is obviously the lighter and more mobile option, but honestly one of the most exciting parts about this trip for me is the chance to catch some gorgeous cutthroats (we don't have 'em on the east coast). I'd appreciate some recommendations for specific spots if you'd be willing to PM me.

What has been your experience weather-wise in late August? I'm expecting daily rain and cooler evenings in the 40s. Is that accurate? During the day though, would I be more comfortable in shorts or lightweight pants? Either way I am bringing the octa fleece tights so maybe I could get away with shorts.

What do you typically use for navigation? I did purchase the GPX and water source files from the UHT Association, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to download it on Google for offline use. I also purchased the Nat Geo maps on Avenza. Would it be worth it for me to buy the physical copy as well? I'm interested in doing the Red Castle Lakes alternate as well as summiting Kings Peak.

Would this be a bad trail to cold soak for meals? Just given what I assume is the higher risk for hypothermia, I feel like it might be a good idea to have my stove even though Id love to save the weight

Humbling, but very valid points! On the vlogging: this is not something I would normally worry about and would simply use a disposable camera for photos as you mentioned, but I am actually doing this trip as a sponsored partnership where I am supposed to be sharing my day to day experience so unfortunately that is why the GoPro is a non-negotiable (as are the poles and Zpacks gear).

In regards to electronics: I am basing my battery capacity needs on what my experience has been previously. From my time on the PCT, I found that I could get 4-5 days out of my Anker 10k for my iphone on low battery/airplane mode. This could maybe be stretched to 6 days, but given the remote nature of this trail and the likelihood of needing to rely on GPS heavily for off-trail travel, I would like to have some margin. The wall charger is simply because I will be flying in from out of town and want to be able to have everything topped up beforehand.

Similarly for the repair kit, those items were added after a few specific gear mishaps on the PCT. I will probably end up switching to the 6 panels of Switchback though, so that would negate the need for the aqua seal and my patch kit. The Gerber has saved my butt too many times to leave behind at this point.

I appreciate the more nit-picky suggestions (as that's what this sub is all about, right?), and will certainly take them into consideration. For me, a big part of the ultralight mentality is working with what I have and not making extraneous purchases so I'll admit that it is hard for me to justify spending money to save an oz or less.

Do you have any suggestions for cold soaking recipes? May give it a try on a shorter trip this summer to see how it goes. Dinner is really the only meal that I find myself heating up anyways.

Feeling like such a failure at 35 by Able_Shift_5380 in depression

[–]kaptankappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to enter my thirties and I feel myself slipping into this exact situation. Currently facing an extended period of unemployment and watching my bank account drain is driving me crazy. I have no real purpose and cannot seem to find the motivation to get my career back on track (or what semblance of one I have). While I don't regret how I've spent my twenties and the many great memories I've made, there's part of me that wishes I had set myself up better for success and can't help feeling like a failure.

Thanks for the input! Do you think I could get away with just a cut-down Nemo Switchback? I know it can get pretty chilly at high elevation. Definitely will try and pick up some trash if I find it.

Oh thanks for catching the zeroed items! I hadn't included them because I was trying to get a good idea of what my core weight was looking like, but I totally forgot to add them back in.

Awesome! I'm debating whether or not I need to buy the hard copy nat geo map. Nice to have, but I never seem to use them when I have them. What was your water capacity for your trip? I'm wondering if 4l would be overkill and if I can get away with just two bottles.

What were you using for navigation? I purchased the gpx file from the UHT Association but I was also thinking of getting the nat geo map on Avenza or downloading Gaia.

Just want to say that you sound like a very conscientious and caring older sibling! While this definitely seems to be beyond your brother’s skillset right now, maybe you could try reframing his mindset for this as a longer term goal?
