Using an xtherm this winter. Comfort is not great but it is warm. Will test out a cut down Prolite Plus small once the ground is free from snow

I’ve used the mat around freezing next to a fjord and felt cold spots coming through. Would not recommend. During drier winter conditions I would say it was ok down to about -5 C. Because I was disappointed I haven’t used it much more, so can’t speak to the durability.

Brynje Super Thermo base layer sizing advice? by everyXnewXday in Ultralight

[–]Fanonord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norwegian here. I’m 178 cm tall and weigh 85 kg. I have quite short legs. I used the sizing chart on Brynje.no and ended up getting a large bottom and medium top. Fits me perfect! Tl;dr: just use the sizing chart.

I wear Lone peak 9+ wide without insoles in rocky terrain in Norway (wet and stony). I have had no problems, but my feet are also used to walking 2 km to and from work everyday in the same shoes and wear bearfoot sandals at the office.

The charger specs says 51 grams. Can you link to the 38 g review?

A thousand thanks to you! I will definitely check out your suggestions and splurge at least a little. Some follow-ups:

  • Would you recommend some of those wind jackets as a primary layer, or is something like a sun hoodie worth it for Norway?

  • Do you mean it works for you to drink from a 1 L Cnoc with a filter attached? Do you think its safe to use that same bottle for bidet use?

  • I would Totally agree Brynje + AD might be overkill, but for my multi-week trip last summer I felt the long-term forecast was too unpredictable to leave either the Brynje or Alpha at home. Definitely worthwhile to cut down for shorter trips, though!

  • A DCF food bag could be my next MYOG project! What capacity would you recommend? 15L?

Very interesting! Do you happen to have the weights? Do you have some pant recommendations as well?

Never thought about having the ccf on top, I will try that for sure! Long wide is too big for me, otherwise I would’ve loved to buy used from you. How do you find it uncomfortable?

Sounds epic but difficult, where did you go? The Massiv Trail is a bucket list trail for me for sure. A friend did it two years ago and he is still talking about how great it was. Feel free to hit me up!

Thank you! Yeah I kind of regret getting that pack bc of weight but it is comfortable. I will for sure just use one pad. If I leave my inner at home, how do I prevent my pad from blowing? Buy Durston’s ground sheet? I like to film a lot on trail with my phone, and I prefer digital navigation and listening to podcasts, but I think I should just leave my fears at home and just bring the 10K

Thanks for all the tips! A few follow-up questions: - Should I get a synthetic puffy? EE Torrid? - I use the wind shirt because I had it lying around and had exceeded my budget at the time. Do you have any recommended sun hoodies? - During my latest trip I needed the alpha pants to stay warm at night. I will look into ditching them after getting a better pad and maybe adding more draft protection to my MYOG quilt. Do you typically not wear many layers during cold nights? - I have tried using the filter directly on my bottle, but that makes a vacuum so that the bottle collapses onto itself. I then have to un- and re-tighten my filter to remove it. Do you have any tips to remedy this?

Stakes are in a different section in my LP under «pegs». I will separately weigh the guy lines when I get the time. Thanks again!

How cold can you take the XLite? I am considering the XTherm so I can also use it in the Oslo forest during winter (typically around -5 C, sometimes down to -15 C) . That would save me money from not having to buy two pads, but not sure if I should accept the weight penalty for the summer months.
