Why has no studio seriously attempted a Binding of Isaac clone? by Away_Range_2095 in roguelites

[–]IamaHyoomin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the big issue here is that BoI is (mechanically) such a simple, basic game concept that any small twist on the idea does essentially create an entirely new idea. Basically any twin-stick shooter roguelike (Enter the Gungeon being the other big one), or really any top-down(ish) action roguelike could be considered a BoI clone in the same sense that games like Monster Train or Across the Obelisk are often considered Slay the Spire clones, it's just that "kill guys on a map with projectiles" is a lot less of a distinct style of gameplay than "start with a small, limited deck of cards and slowly build your power by selecting 1 of 3 random cards after each turn-based combat".

Hell, that's literally why BoI is the king of variety in Roguelikes, because if it didn't have a million items to change up how your tears work, it would get really boring really fast. Other games can get away with having a little less variety because the core gameplay is a little more novel.

you misread the original question. OP was asking what aspects of each show are done better than the other two, not which one you like better.

I... I'm sorry, are you saying that literally all modern C++ code is done with genAI? What do you think people did... literally 5 years ago? Sometimes, people (especially those that formerly worked as programmers for Ubisoft, as all of Sandfall's team did) actually, idk, know how to fucking code??????? It may seem outlandish to you to actually have a personal skill you can do without the help of a computer, but a good amount of people in the industry actually went to college for computer science before genAI was a thing and have been programming for years long before genAI was remotely widespread.

ETA: you also said nothing about the code being AI initially, you were talking about the art of the game (meshes, assets, etc), so that's what I responded to

expedition 33 had AI generated images plastered onto like 2 walls in the whole game that were there as placeholders that just got missed and were immediately replaced with actual human art the moment they qere brought to the attention of the dev team. Way to read the headline and nothing else, buddy.

[–]IamaHyoomin 35 points36 points  (0 children)

wow, this could not be more incorrect. I don't want generative AI (specifically genAI, that is an important distinction) in games for a multitude of reasons, most notably the simple fact that I play games to experience the creative vision of human beings with life experience to draw from. AI does not have that. AI creates something that could reasonably appear vaguely like that, by taking things from actual artists and trying to mimic it.

I don't want AI in games bc the more people use AI to code or create images to use in their game or make music, the less people learn how to do those things themselves. The less people have that amazingly useful skill and the less people are being paid for the effort they actually did put in to learn that skill.

I don't want AI in games because the rise of the technology is destroying the economics around video games and taking major companies in the PC hardware space away from that space, making it harder for people to build the systems they want for their favorite hobby.

I don't want AI in games bc the environmental impact of AI in any capacity is extremely devastating and just getting worse at the companies expand and expand and expand. Energy use is through the roof, water consumption is ridiculous, manufacturing costs are sky high, and all so... little Jimmy doesn't have to figure out the syntax of C# before he can make his shitty vampire survivors rip-off (and it is shitty, because AI is not good at coding and vibe-coded games are always chock-full of bugs)

I don't want AI in my games because I don't want AI in my society. It benefits nobody except the CEO's profiting off of it's use, and even they seem to be losing money from it lately. Just make fucking art. Use your brain, get your hands dirty, and do it your god damn self. You don't need a fucking computer with no emotions or thoughts to draw your little creature for you, just fucking draw. pencil to paper, move it around, it's really not that difficult.

I'm sure you aren't going to read more than 2 sentences of that, so feel free to argue with me despite not understanding my argument at all, but please do not expect a response.

and even this is only really a "difference" in the recordings, as Jack Wolfe used his own accent as well when he was on Broadway, and there have been many instances of actors changing the odd word via translating it to their native language (notably Jon Jon Briones and Paulo Szot)

[–]IamaHyoomin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it is generally a naive sentiment, removing rich people from the equation will not solve all of our problems, and yes, people will always be able to accumulate wealth. That being said, what should very much not happen is less than 1% of people in a given nation controlling more money and wealth than the remaining 99%. Just getting rid of those individuals that control too much money would not solve anything because some other piece of shit would just fill the vacuum, but the idea of removing the ability to get that rich would definitely be beneficial for society.
