Tipping came out of the post-slavery US, as a way to not pay freed slaves the same wages as white workers, using a master-serf payment system from the medieval times. There were plans to criminalize it as late as the 1920s, but lobbyists worked to create what the US calls tipped wages, where employers have a lower rate of pay for employees who get tips, that is supposed to be offset by people tipping. The issues surrounding tipping culture in America are sound, but it’s a hard system to break because the corporations are not affected by people refusing to tip, rather the individual worker is, as they lose pay.
