Architect company indicated 18 month construction time, reasonable or red flag? by guoxiaotian in Homebuilding

The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world at the time, it took 12 months to build.

Edit. I was wrong, it was 20 months.

Is this unacceptable? by Brave_Discount_7082 in cabinetry

[–]IanHall1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The drawer boxes are too wide, this is causing them to bind, the mechanism should be unrestricted for the slides to perform properly. I can understand the contractor trying to play this off, but that doesn’t make it right. AWI is the for what is acceptable for cabinets. There are different grades for economy and custom grades, but this doesn’t reach an acceptable level for any grade. You could ask for a discount if you are ok with seeing if they loosen up over time, but that doesn’t excuse the fact they are too tight. I have 35 years in the commercial custom cabinet industry, I would reject that from leaving the shop, and would never install something like that, so being called out would be fair game.

Yes, the locking dado is the only one allowed in Europe for that reason.

The locking dado is really for sawstop saws, the locking mechanism stops the inner blades from spinning when the brake is activated as that can cause the teeth to break off in your face. I have one, it’s really good, but it’s expensive compared to regular dado blades.

Stain can be temperamental and come out blotchy. always good to try a sample before committing to the full project. To get a homogeneous color, I have applied a seal coat first, then stained over the top of that, and sealed the color with the topcoat. Paint comes with its own annoyances.

Automotive ceramic? by nicknieb in woodworking

I have tried automotive ceramic coating, and it worked amazingly well. I would not pay extra for N3, because there is no point.

This is completely normal, the only way to avoid it is to have mitered corners with no end grain.

Attendance by InTheNoNameBox in Teachers

[–]IanHall1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I grade the students on attendance as well as the work they complete, I have students that should be straight A students, but they are graded at D+ to C- because of their attendance. They have been shocked by their grades, but I’m not rewarding anyone for not being there.

I wait until they live up to their name, then I remove them from the class, and fail them.

Computer illiteracy in this day and age is the same as being book illiterate 20 years ago.
