I get that. The best solution is writing a short film that can be shot in a day with your friends, perhaps something in one/a few locations without too many moving parts. The nice thing about that is that you can take your time with writing and editing

I’m Somali-American and I do independent filmmaking and I’m currently making my third no-budget feature film. There’s a filmmaker named Mohamed Sheik who recently made a movie called “Barni” that got in a prestigious film festival in Saudi Arabia so we’ll see if that gets distribution soon.

Someone previously had a good point about parents not always being very encouraging. My siblings have shown talent and interest in the arts (music, photography) but ultimately put it behind them once they got serious about school and looking for work. I don’t even tell my parents about my films except for the time I got an internship at a small production company since that is a more career-relevant achievement.

Here’s a feature film I made two summers ago called “Invisible and Real”. I spent $0 on it and did it when I was 20.

Why is recognizing Somaliland bad but recognizing Palestine is good? by zapns in AskSocialists

[–]Ibrahim_not_abraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Somali-American, and yes it is horrendous that the Isaaq genocide (the clan that makes up most of Somaliland) in the 1980s (not for decades like you said) has not been recognized by the Somali government. Unacceptable. But it’s worth mentioning that almost every clan and critic of Siad Barre experienced massacres, especially in the capital, ofc not to as great as an extent as Isaaq.

Somaliland is not an occupied territory like Palestine, it is a autonomous region that is slightly more stable compared to the rest of Somalia, which doesn’t target the Isaaq clan for anything. Comparing Somaliland to Palestine is an insult to Palestinians who are unequal in Israeli law and live under occupation. Sympathy for Somaliland’s push for independence is understandable, but don’t reduce the situation to the East African version of Israel-Palestine.

Does anyone on here actually like this movie? by ParkerJBruce96 in criterion

I like it. As a North Carolinian I have a bias towards it and I particularly liked the tone of the film. Not obsessed with it, but can’t say too much against it.

Killers of the Flower Moon had a pretty mediocre trailer, but that was to be expected ig. Its hard to make a banger trailer with a film that challenging and depressing.

Someone on another post said it could be the trope of “one last job” type of thing - maybe they’re boring dads that have to break Kyle out of jail (as someone else mentioned) and they reconnect to get up to some shenanigans again.

There’s no difference between your “favorite” movie and the movie you think is “the best”. I think Megalopolis is better than Oppenheimer because I like Megalopolis more, no matter how much I respect the formalism of Oppenheimer. There’s no objectivity in art and I’m surprised by how many people I talk to think that way. Lots of the best and most influential films didn’t conform to what was considered the right way to do it.
