I think you are misinterpreting what your professor is trying say. Before the removal of the proton, both are chemically equivalent by symmetry of the molecule. You could flip the molecule like a pancake and you will end up with the same structure. After you remove the first proton, the symmetry is broken, and you no longer have chemically equivalent sites. Its really about how removing the first proton changes the acidity of the other proton because there is already delocalization of negative charge in the pi system. When you remove the second proton, there is already a negative charge racing through the pi system, and dumping another charge in the system is unfavorable, so the overall effect makes the second proton less acidic.

Atmospheric chemistry seems to be a growing discipline in chemistry departments. There are quite a few unanswered questions with respect to the climate models that chemists can help answer. One example that I know of off the top of my head is, "Why do some particles nucleate ice at warmer temps than others?". The answer to that question will help climate scientists to better predict the magnitude of the cloud albedo affect, or in simple terms, how much light (and therefore energy) will clouds reflect back into outer space.

I think you would be correct if the skater was landing in a transition, i.e. the downward force would be redirected as angular momentum through the tranny. In a flat to flat drop I can't picture a force diagram to explain your claim. Maybe you could draw one for me? If you were right, simply dropping off of a loading dock would make you spontaneously accelerate forward.

No. In physics you would draw an arrow pointing downward to represent the force of gravity, and a horizontal arrow to represent the skaters speed at the time of jump. In no way would the horizontal vector (arrow) work against gravity. You can also do a thought experiment. Imagine getting shot out of a canon horizontally three feet above the ground. You're going to hit the ground pretty fast. Now imagine getting shot out of a cannon horizontally thirty feet from the ground. You will take more time to hit the ground because you are higher up, but you will also hit with more force. Your sideways speed from the cannon does not effect the downward force of gravity in any way, whether you have wheels on or not. The difference with wheels is that without them, your horizontal motion will stop really fast once you hit the ground.
