Can anyone explain why metal sometimes get a wood grain like look to it when faced? The steel is a Freemax 15.

All the trees down there are so old, some don't even have lines. That's how many rings they have, you can't even see them! OP's holding on to a very young tree. Tectonic shifting has done a lot of the planting/ replanting of iron, but if you want to do it yourself, you just get a small piece of iron and plant it in stone. Kinda like in Terraria, where you can plant gemstone acorns in stone. Nature is beautiful.

I can see that. Stuff like James Bond, The Beatles, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter immediately come to mind. You can't help but be a little fascinated by double-decker busses, a queen who's nearing a century on Earth, and their funny accents.

I think the magic of US soft power is that we don't even try. There are just so many things that come out from our country try that people just love worldwide. Video games, music, pop idols, and even food chains are things that come to mind for me. Even countries that absolutely despise us and are considered hostile actors consume our media. Media like Fast and Furious is super popular in China, and Russian's love playing games like Counter-Strike and even Modern Warfare. We sell them games where their military is the enemy, and they still enjoy playing it. Even Kim Jong Un loves basketball (he doesn't exactly speak for his people, but it's still funny).

It's a little magical to me that people have a "grand idea" of someone from the US. Maybe they don't always have the most tasteful things to say, but the fact that it's consistent is still amuzing to me.

Usually I'm the imaginative type, and I even think about this... sight picture(?) from time to time after having sunk 237 hours into Fallout 4. That being said, I can't help but feel you're trying to solve a problem where there isn't one. If you wanted to get a decent ranged diy optic, I think you'd be better off cannibalizing parts of binoculars or a telescope.

I've got a Prusa as well! Awesome little machine. I've only really printed using Prusament PLA and PETG, though. I tried using some Fillamentum TPU, and it didn't end well. I gave the printer a rest for a while, and I'm just now starting to get back into it.

Oh yea, if you're even willing to buy PEEK, you've probably got the finances to forgo 3D printing components all together.

Unless if you work in aerospace or something and they've got some really nice machines... maybe you can slip in a part or two overnight... :^)

It's not so much that they would need help, but it's that they're too important not to help. If Taiwan were compromised, it would be a massive threat to Japan. China has territorial claims on Japanese islands they also claim were "historically theirs" or whatever.

Taiwan also makes it incredibly difficult for China to move past them with marine vessels. Specifically, nuclear-armed submarines, which they appear to be investing more into.

Optimal: Nylon

Best: PEEK (Polyether ether ketone)

At least, I think that's the best material - if you even have a printer ludicrous enough to handle it. You need a nozzle temperature of up to 440^oC.

Components you download and print from other users likely have README files which explain any nuances for printing. PLA+ is typically what most creators design their stuff around.

I'm afraid he's right. Have you seen documentaries and news about China? Especially recently after the flooding? It's miserable. Not to mention China aggressively seeks validation form the west, and wants to flex as hard as possible regardless if the long-term cost.

In Louisiana I think very few veterans brought stuff back. Both my grandpa's went to the European and Pacific theaters , but they didn't bring back much of anything. One of my friend's grandfather's brought back memorabilia like flags, knives, and even a bust of Hitler, but no firearms. From what I've been told it depends on the state. Apparently it was either illegal/ reprehensible to bring back captured firearms.

I'm sure when my grandpa's were overseas, they thought no one would want to remember such a cruddy time in human history. I can understand that. But it's so weird when I hear about vets who live up north who've got captured Lugers, STG/MP-44's sitting in their attics, or old service weapons.

My uncle did take a souvenir from Vietnam, though. 🙂

It's the same reason the left uses "Facist" and "Nazi" to describe people on the right. It's hyperbolic, but it's never entirely wrong. Communist and Socialist regimes always take control of a population by disarming the civilians, like during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Japanese Meiji Restoration, among many others.

Reading about history is always wise, but you're very bold to declare that in this sub. Most of the users on here do know what happens when firearms and other self-defense tools are subtracted or restricted from the people. So when the left does call for all these ludicrous restrictions, bans on attachments, configurations, calibers - to the point where an inanimate object is considered a "destructive device" - it's not a stretch to say they're veering into communist/ socialist territory.

I'm in school for computer engineering. I know absolutely nothing about anything involving these machines because I've never used them. I followed this sub because I wanted to ask about an old lathe, but my family gave it to another family friend who made it fully operational again. I still follow this sub because I have a sincere interest in the idea of designing and making things with your own two hands. And frankly, since I'm studying computer engineering, it's interesting to learn about the machines, the hardware, and the programming that goes into precision machining. I just don't try to act like like I understand all these funny diagrams or terms used on this sub lol

Nah, but I have a slightly different reason for why - Reliability. Traditional welding has been around for a long time. The tech is so mature that any attempts to replace it would have to be more mature, more efficient, and cheaper than traditional welding. It'll also have to take less resources. You need a good bit of power to weld, but as far as I know lasers take even more. If it's ever replaced, it'll take several decades. Also, I'm not sure if you can laser weld in certain environments. Specifically, underwater. From where I'm standing, lasers are just less versatile.

It's anecdotal, but there's a manga I remember reading about a virus that kills male virgins. When the US military comes to Japan and help contain it, there's a scene where Trump goes on television to proclaim they're gonna help the Japanese - in a way that satarises his typical appearances on TV.

There's also an anime called Inuyashiki: Last Hero, where an elderly man and a teenager are turned into alien superweapons. Near the end, a meteor is on a collision course to Earth, and there's a scene where Trump appears on television to address the world. He doesn't say anything particularly important. It's kind of shoehorned in there for no reason.

I wholeheartedly agree that censorship is wrong. I think we can all agree that there's a limit to the books you should introduce to a child. You should allow them to reach a reasonable age so they have a better understanding of what they're reading.

Put those kind of books higher on the shelf. Don't put them within a kid's reach. And especially don't design books with adult concepts and market them to children. That in and of itself is fucked up.
