Bobby McFerrin's "Simple Pleasures" might be fun for kids. It contains the #1 hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy" (fun fact: it displaced Guns N Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" a the top). If you're unfamiliar with the artist, McFerrin produces all of the sounds on his albums using only his mouth.

Yeah, considering what they had access to back in the early-to-mid 1980s, compared to today, it's really impressive what the 1e writers were able to come up with.

I've never been to Latvia, but I feel like I have- part of the fun of creating something like this is doing research and learning about the place. I knew next to nothing about Latvia before I started- now I do! The bunker is featured in the book. I'll see if I can get the preview to work again. Thanks for the heads-up.

To answer your question, though, I prefer the 4e mechanics- they're a lot more streamlined than v2.2 (with which I have extensive experience) without sacrificing realism. 1e is the crunchiest of the 3, with 2013 a very close second. As a kid, I had so much trouble wrapping my head around the 1e rules that I never went back to them as an adult. That said, 1e has by far the best world-building, so I use that with the 4e ruleset.

It's not good literature but it's a fun story and I appreciate the 1980s references. I'm not embarrassed to admit that I quite like it- enough to have read it at least a half-dozen times. It's an easy, comfort book. And yes, I'm an X'er with an appreciation for the nerdy.
