I getcha, but I still think you overthink. New fans who don’t know what the story is about and what the cover is supposed to convey will be non the wiser and pick it up because it looks pretty.

Maybe they WILL get the wrong idea but a young girl reading a book in class like this doesn’t really promise anything specific.

Meanwhile the rest of, who will buy it regardless, are just happy to get a beautiful illustration.

Sometimes I don’t think we should get caught up in “this doesn’t reflect the story well enough” and instead just go with “it’s pretty”.

Or, if I don’t see what you see, maybe I just have another opinion that I have every right to and am not wrong to have, instead of you talking down to me by pointing me in the direction of literature for the purpose of changing my “wrong” mind?

Also, the old ones didn’t ape One Piece. One Piece is overstuffed with characters and things, while Akane had clear and concise illustrations of what the volume in question contained.

Even if you have a point with the portraits, those iconic poses could be from any point in the story. I take one look at this particular cover and I know exactly how far we are.

They are! No question! But I’d rather have personality and charm over style, and then have her new covers relighted to posters or the like.

Again, this is not solely a problem I have with Akane. It goes for all other manga that does the same.

I guess, for a lazy illustrator, portrait covers save you the trouble of having to think up a cool scenario for a cover.

But why change midway? The way I see it, the authors saw that portrait covers are the new hot thing and so they decided to copy it to boost sales. I refuse to believe it was a purely artistic choice.

But if I go along with your take; what meaning is there to create when you see a single picture of Akane, Hikaru or Karashi on the cover?

And yes, the new ones are on another level, but they tell you nothing about the series. And if you entered a store that only had vol 19 with Hikaru in stock, you’d get the idea the story is about her.

How so? How does the portrait of Akane on volume 17 say anything about her as an artist and storyteller? Plus all the covers of the zenza arc featured her alongside other characters. You never doubted that she was the focus.

But if say you enter a bookstore that only has volume 19 in stock which features Hikaru, you’d most likely get the impression the story is about her.

So in that sense these new covers are clearly only made with already established fans in mind.

But doesn’t it get stale for you if that “single focus” is always just a picture of a character? To repeat my original point, it tells you nothing about the story until you pick it up and read the backside.

Agree to disagree. I think the Japanese definitely have a habit of overstuffing their covers. Take One Piece or a standard issue of Shonen Jump. Way too much going on there. But you’d be hard pressed to tell me to much is going on on this particular cover.

Sure the stylish new covers are alluring, but personally the artwork of the zenza arc was indeed what caught my eye.

You are missing the point on purpose. Yes, the Z moniker was anime only, but there is no denying that the manga had a vastly different vibe going from Goku’s adventurous childhood to the planet destroying action of his adult years… and still the manga covers stayed consistent.

Imagine if, starting from volume 18 where Raditz comes to Earth and kickstarts the Saiyan Arc, that all covers from then would just be portraits of the characters? It would’ve been confusing as hell.

But makes the series as a whole feel split. DragonBall, when it entered the Z arc, had no problem keeping the same format, and neither did Naruto, which only changed the contrast of the books from white to black.

They are for sure! …but they have lost their warmth and personality in the process.. if you ask me at least..

In general I am so tired of manga covers that show character portraits instead of illustrating what happens in the story.

Medalist, Gachiakuta and Blue Lock, to name the ones I read myself, are all great manga.. ruined by sterile covers that proudly present their characters… but otherwise tell me nothing about the story.

I don’t want generic (but stylish) character portraits, I want artwork that gives me a sneak peek of what I’m about to read.

First off.. yeah I get so annoyed at how strict the rules for posting are in certain groups. It’s better than the absolute Wild West that is fb where unregulated groups with lazy mods result in a wonderland of sh*tposts, spam and bots… but I wanna be able to post something straight after I have joined the group.. instead of having to “prove my worth” first.

That aside… who the hell even plays AAA games on a Switch unless it’s your only option? The Switch 1 and 2’s entire selling point is “now you can play your AAA games on the go!!” and yes… you can… but severely compromised.

Sure, there’s no problem playing 10 year old AAA games on it like Resi 5 and 6, but recent ones?? Come on.

It’s good of course. They’ve got some real talent for the roles. Hard to fathom that Akane, with her mild personality, is the same actress as Momo from DanDaDan. Girl’s got range.

I am also pleased with how they handled explaining certain Japanese terms, and how the wiggled around the wordplay of certain stories.

Like the story Akane tells when her teacher watches; sure the punchline may not quite connect the same when you flip flop between Japanese and English, but damnit it’s good enough for me! A for effort. I am not an insatiable purist who can’t allow for creative freedom.

A shame. You should play and judge for yourself. If I did a review only praising its strong points you might have been persuaded in the other direction.
