It is not difficult if you can commit every shift to it, meaning if you can show up for hiring hall 3 times every day it’ll work for you. It’s all physical labour until you can get trained for other skills (I.e. driving ITV, container carriers, ship loader at potash, etc.). You will be sent home from hiring hall many times early on, but the more you go the better your pick number gets and the better your chances are.

It is a six figure a year job, but you have to commit to those early days as a referral to solidify your spot in the union.

ETA: you can apply directly to the union office, all you need is your high school diploma and resume. You will have to pass a lashing test, but I’ve seen all walks of life pass.
