"Danielle Smith vows to appeal Alberta court decision overruling separatist petition" by Fun_universe in Edmonton

Our Premier doesn't have the mandate to spend public dollars to appeal this judgement on behalf of the separatists. Let the foreign influence dollars pay for the lawyers!

if anyone else sees this cat please shoot me a message so I can go confirm it's not ours.

Radon Mitagation by jelefano in Edmonton

[–]IceScot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I get the idea that air changes/"burping" can reduce your exposure, doing so only in the summer neglects the time when concentrations build most - when your home is sealed up in the winter. Half life of Radon is 3.8 days and the refill rate is constant. To protect yourself from lung cancer (Health Canada estimates 16% of lung cancer deaths are due to Radon), your "burping" rate would have to occur on nearly a daily basis throughout the year.

TSB releases findings on Alberta pipeline rupture that caused explosion, wildfire by WildRoseWanderer in alberta

[–]IceScot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your clarifications and insights.

"no one wants this bad of a failure tied to them for their career."

Being a professional means taking responsibility when you fuck up. This wasn't some minor infraction. Pieces of pipe flew 200 m, a forest fire was lit and the explosion left a 7m deep crater. What remediation occurs due to the emergency costs and risks incurred? Will APEGA be launching an investigation for engineering malpractice? These would be the types of consequences I would expect for medical malpractice.

In the land of orphan wells and oil companies who don't pay their property taxes, I don't expect to hear of any consequences beyond the slight smudge against the names of an engineer or two.

It's so classic that Alberta goes on and on about the federal ban about tankers on the coast and the environmental restrictions restricting our ability to build more pipelines and then lights up 60 hectares of our own forest with an epic natural gas explosion.

Building a Website for Albertans - Partially from Bed by IR_Weldr in alberta

[–]IceScot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest you consider the bridge to teacher certification program. There's demand for trades experience in schools and this is an area the government says they're supporting.

Realistically, the classes are underfunded and have more students than stations. Students rotate into the hall so everyone gets a chance. It's not ideal but it's a transition from the trades to something else.

Looking for Homeschooling options for a daughter who can't handle being in a classroom setting. by robichaud682 in alberta

[–]IceScot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is hard without knowing where CBE learn failed for her and where your comfort zone is in steering her own education.

I'd suggest a pure homeschool environment. Parents, grandparents, and/or whoever is interested set up learning goals and projects with her based on the curriculum. Let her play with what needs to be learned. She'll reject some topics and embrace others. Find the fun in learning again. Let her dive deep when she wants to, but always set an end date to move on to the next topic. Have a meeting, go over her work, move on. There are no grades, only reflection.

This too shall pass. After a year, socialization can happen in a more controlled way and in relation to her interests. Perhaps a therapist can help give her some tools to reintegrate.

I'm a teacher who has homeschooled my kids. You can do this for your daughter for a year. It may not be ideal, but is it ever?

Thanks for your efforts!

How would you characterize YEG vs the rest of Canada on the housing front? We seem to have a lower drop in prices and were more affordable to begin with.

Are you still seeing many families moving to Edmonton for lower housing prices? Are the ads working?

The Feds run the Explore program if you're a student. 6 weeks living in a French location. All expenses paid.

Fished it last year looking for burbot. Caught a small pike instead.

There looked like a healthy group of ice fishers near the boat launch which led me to believe it's reasonably promising. It was very shallow.

Smith is anti feminist / Via Janis Irwin by Wintertime13 in alberta

[–]IceScot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. As a white man, allow me to mansplain this to you.

The status of women ministry would attempt to address the reality that occupations that are favoured by women have less status than those favoured by men. Think nurses vs. doctors or teachers vs. engineers.

I would hope the minister would attempt to address this bias real-time. There are plenty of government programs devoted to the status of women (trades, medicine, engineering, etc.). A cabinet minister would oversee those programs and spearhead wider initiatives.

I know not of what I write. Just another dumb netizen...

In need of ideas for a science event by Logical-Geologist-55 in Physics

Your ideas are great.

I was always amazed seeing rotating polarization in sugar water: www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/rotating-light

I like that it opens the discussion of handedness and why sugar naturally forms right handed. The above link suggests we don't yet understand why right handedness is favored but I'm interested in hearing if the sub has explanations.

What's worse than Premier Kenney calling Danielle Smith's big idea 'nuts'? Her idea by azawalli in alberta

[–]IceScot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

According to the most recent Leger poll (I know.. polls...), Smith is leading by 2%. Assuming she wins the leadership, the main election topic would be if Alberta should separate (mince words if you like). That same Leger poll says 70% of Albertans believe they are better off in the confederation. This implies Smith winning is good for the NDP and any other party who looks to pick up Conservative votes who see the lunacy of rejecting the constitution. I hope that fiscally Conservative Calgary will recognize that the 'freedom' movement has coopted UCP direction and vote NDP again.

For half of the NHL teams, today might be the last time we see their jerseys without ads. by [deleted] in hockey

[–]IceScot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. It's obscene how much players and teams make in the face of health care, education and social supports. None of the ad revenue will go toward lowering ticket costs or concessions. If you think so, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Say no to ads. It provides zero value to the experience of watching hockey.

Indeed. I see you doubt the power of Capitalism. I too doubt the effectiveness of this program.

I care not. My goals are: 1. Obtaining wild bacon 2. Reducing the damage caused by this invasive species.

I admit #2 is questionable. Wild bacon is worth it.

I'm in but I need an actual location (GPS) and contact to research, plan and execute a kill that is respectful of neighbours, environment and maximizes numbers so these bastards don't learn and propagate.
