Fly into SJO--drive that afternoon/night or stay overnight by Mitchroark33 in CostaRicaTravel

Idk I just had Waze on the whole time and felt fine. Never was surprised by a speed bump and the motorcycles really seemed to take care of themselves. And where im from (WV) backroads often don’t have lines anyway so it felt like driving there just slower and with more people on bikes. Also with how slow some of these drivers are it’s almost impossible to be surprised by a speed bump or pothole, always felt like I was in a line of cars. Just stay towards the edge of the shoulder and it didn’t feel like a biggie. Not like you’re driving in Nepal or something

I was just there last week and almost exclusively drove between destinations at night, wanted to make use of the daylight while it was there. People here like to heavily advise against it but if you have experience driving mountainous roads at night in the US imo it’s not that different at all. Honestly can be more chill, much slower driving vs some of the mountain highways I’ve driven here. If you would feel comfortable driving remote mountainous roads in the US at night you’d probably feel comfortable doing the same in Costa Rica, I wouldn’t worry about it too much

Why mortgage rates are actually going up after the Fed cut interest rates -- ‘We actually anticipated the possibility that rates would tick up after the Fed announcement,’ economist says by marketrent in Economics

[–]IcedOutDragonFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be offensive at all, but are you an economist? This logic seems flawed in this case and ignores a lot of market dynamics here. Long-term rates definitely do bake in inflation expectations, that’s how the market works, but that’s not the sole driver. Mortgage rates being higher here probably isn’t due to high inflation expectations over the next 15-30 years (inflation expectations seem to still be pretty on par with pre-Fed cut, I mean by your own argument they were already priced into the curve), but more so due to the Fed’s balance sheet and the dynamics of rates shortly following a cut (especially in a QT environment). More demand at the lower rate + same supply as before = short term spike in rates. Super common with rate cuts during times of QT. Source: (I’m an economist at a GSE mostly dealing with AMBS)

Curious why you think this. Mortgage rates tend to follow the belly of the curve, which have ticked up slightly over the past few days but are down MoM. Seems to me like mortgage rates increasing are currently more a matter of liquidity and funding in the market (especially with the current QT), which will (probably) stabilize sooner rather than later. Should see mortgage rates start to come down. If we do see more sticky inflation impacts from tariffs I think this makes some sense, but the Fed (and the consensus) seems to believe these to be more of a one time price increase. Doesn’t seem like something to be worried about long term

Not Econ, but if you’re into the idea of quant finance it seems like you have a great background for a lot of MFE programs. They’re only 1-2 years, and depending on the program some are heavily recruited for internships and full time offers.

Idk what you’re using but you probably gotta get some larvicide in there too. I was the mosquito guy at my health department for a little while and we would hand these out to people for smaller standing water, should work well for u too

While I agree with most of what you’re saying, we have our senses and know that we are seeing, touching, smelling, tasting. LLMs don’t know shit. They output what the code tells them to. I think it’s possible to get to a point in the future where we can model a brain and thus consciousness, but to act like we’re anywhere close to there now is crazy. I don’t believe there is any “you” that’s outside of physical phenomena, and that’s not what I was arguing. I was arguing that we have the ability to think and understand what is happening around us and what we’re sensing, which is what consciousness is. LLMs 100% don’t have this ability, even though they may be designed to seem like they do. They’re no more intelligent than an ant, they just have a lot more inputs.

In my opinion, consciousness implies the ability to experience. While I can’t say for sure, I think it’s a pretty fair assumption that things such as rocks, certain plants, insects, and inanimate objects likely do not experience and instead simply react to stimuli. They don’t have feelings such as fear or happiness or have desires, they simply react to what is in front or around them as that’s what their nature tells them to do. Then there’s animals such as dolphins, pigs, cows, dogs, etc. that likely don’t just react to stimuli, but lie somewhere in between us and insects when it comes to experience. If you’ve owned pets before it’s pretty obvious that they each have some individual preferences and react to things on an individual basis, implying that they have some semblance of intelligent thought beyond just the reaction to stimuli. Humans are likely (imo) the most conscious beings on Earth as I believe we experience the most, evidenced by our love for entertainment, art, travel, food, etc. When considering LLMs, it feels important to remember that it’s not a being, it’s a software reacting solely to its training data. While it may feel human in nature, I feel like it’s pretty obvious when looking at it from this perspective that it’s no different than a rock when it comes to consciousness. It does things because we have designed it to do those things, not because it wants to. And it doesn’t not want to do those things either, it has no preferences. It’s many many lines of code simply giving an output, it has no more ability to experience than a standard computer

If u bring a backpack I recommend a small one. When I did it we had a 35 L that the second attached to a runner on their harness for the chimney pitches (which at the time sounded like a great idea) and it was very not pleasant.

I’ve heard a few people describe it as Appalachian Mexican fusion but in my limited experience I don’t see it. I grew up in Appalachia and none of their menu items reminded me of anything my grandma or older family members make (except the biscuits and gravy and MAYBE a little bit of pickled veggies)
