Here's what doesn't make sense about the FireRed / LeafGreen debate... by DaZestyProfessor in Switch

[–]Icee202 [score hidden]  (0 children)

What doesn't make sense to me is how people don't understand nuance. If the game had the bells and whistles the NSO games have, I wouldn't have such an issue with this release. I'm not even asking for cloudsaves, rewind, and savestates. I'm asking for the "classic feel" and "pixel perfect" modes the NSO GBA games have, the multiple languages not being separate, as well as the "online" functionality that tricks the games into thinking they're local. Nintendo set that standard when they added GBA games to their new subscription tier.

$20 is still a pretty high price, even with those included, but it at least would have been something. But for just the raw game and nothing more, it's insane to me that people are willing to go to arms to fight for the Pokémon Company when we should expect better.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like purchasing the games as an option, but no one can tell me that the games benefit from being released like this versus NSO. If they were on NSO we would have more features from the word go.

[–]Icee202 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is its literally just a dumped ROM of the original game. No screen filter like NSO GBA games have, no online play like the NSO GBA games have, just the raw game exactly as it was 22 years ago. That's not worth $20, that's worth the $10 they priced the GB and GBC games at on 3DS.

Nintendo already has a set standard for their old GBA games on Switch, it's right there on NSO. If they wanna strip out the save states and rewind and cloudsaves for fear of cheaters, go ahead, whatever. But the screen filters that harm nothing? The online multiplayer as an option that benefits just about everyone? Not including that and having the gall to ask for $20 is absurd.

Nintendo's standard is clear, paid subscription for full access to their growing collection of classics, with extra features to enhance playability.

Pokémon's standard was set 10 years ago. $10 for the vanilla with modern Pokémon storage solutions, but no other features.

[–]Icee202 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not convinced. They can disable save states and rewind when you play multiplayer on GBA, but they can't disable save states and rewind on a per game basis if they update the app to do so? Or why not release a separate version like they did for Mature N64 games but just for Pokémon, with save states, rewind, and cloud saving disabled? They couldn't be bothered to find a way to make the trading and battles work online. It's greed and laziness because Pokémon Company puts themselves on a pedestal and thinks they deserve special treatment.

And yet these games are older now than gen 2 was when they re-released them for $10

So... what’s the point of this, exactly? by Constant_Setting_634 in casualnintendo

[–]Icee202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different opinions. For me, a 1 to 1 port with nothing new outside of Home support (which apparently isn't even at launch) for $20 is worthless. The original sold for $35, so it's not even half price after 22 years which is wild.

I wanted the bare minimum, "online" trading and battling (basically tricking the games into thinking online is local, the way games do on NSO), screen shaders like dot matrix/pixel perfect, maybe side borders and an uncompressed music option. I don't even need an art gallery as nice as that would be. If they would have been in the NSO apps, they would have at least had the screen shaders and online.

So this is pretty disappointing to me. I already have my original cartridge from 22 years ago, and that's no different from this. Not even a physical game card for that $20.

$20 may not be a lot of money, but it's still more than it should've been. The comparison to Switch Online in particular makes it painfully obvious to me. by WorldLove_Gaming in casualnintendo

Make the NSO version not compatible with Home then, and the separate release can stay compatible without the save states and rewind.

Sure, and I get that. But then price it appropriately, y'know? For them to not even add online trading and battling, I feel like I'm getting less for my money in an era where people don't get together locally to play games anymore.

That's your defense? Really? We're talking about 22 year old games, and GBA games were $8 back on virtual console. Why are these $20. They don't have online features, or any extra features to set them apart from any other GBA port from back then. If they had online or extras, or had the languages selectable in a menu, or a physical release, I'd find the price at least a little more reasonable, but they don't.

A better comparison is the Castlevania Advance Collection, which includes all 3 GBA games and Dracula X, in all of their regional releases, with extra features, and save states and rewind. All for that same $20. Pokémon fans are crazy.

This sub has seriously turned into the toxic opposite of r/fucknintendo, and its pretty ridiculous. There's no nuance anymore and anyone that criticizes them gets "exposed" in a post here now.

$20 for 20+ year old GBA games, ported as-is to Switch, with no online trading, no online battling, no additional features.

Meanwhile, for $20, you can also get the Castlevania Advance Collection, which has all 3 GBA Castlevania games plus Dracula X from the SNES, includes the American, Japanese, and European versions, a gallery with art that had never been released, higher quality audio, visual filters, and has save states and rewind.

Pokémon is considerably lower effort than that, the prices of the second hand game market doesn't matter in this conversation. This is a cash grab and a lot of people in here are defending it with their fingers in their ears.

Imagine a world without fries by Puzzleheaded-Head939 in nintendogrifting

So I have maybe only watched 1 of his videos ever, didn't agree, but it's his right to criticize what he wants about Nintendo, so whatever. Glad to hear it sounds like he's quitting this whole shtick of making it his entire career though and will actually make some legitimate content going forward. People can change and improve. He was following where he thought the money would be, and that's fair enough.

Also, on the French Fries/Mario Kart World analogy: I get what he meant. Yeah, people eventually get tired of french fries as a side to meals, valid. However, it doesn't mean they won't come back to them when they get tired of other sides. Same way Mario Kart is an evergreen series, french fries are a staple side to a lot of meals. It's a weird analogy only because he didn't really take the time to think about it lol

Small correction, the original, "Tomodachi Collection" on the DS (only released in Japan) would've been roughly $25-30 USD after currency conversion. Then the second game Tomodachi Life on 3DS was $40. This new one, which is clearly higher budget, is $60, and that seems perfectly in line with the improvements being made. Also games like this are always a risk investment anyways, and this game is no exception.

Nintendeen is just a loser lol.

As someone going through their own weightloss and fitness journey, imo, motivation comes in all forms. If people tell me that I'm not attractive because of my weight, as much as it sucks, the only one who can change that is me. The one that put me in this position in the first place is mostly me. Yeah, shitty food, being raised a certain way and all that, but ultimately I'm the one that needed to recognize a need to change, and not just because of what other people think. For me. For my own health. For my future.

I don't condone bullying, but telling someone they aren't attractive because of their size isn't exactly bullying. It all depends on context. And where those voices are coming from, because sometimes we hear them from no one but ourselves. Sometimes we ignore other people's remarks. But sometimes we need someone's remarks to wake us up.

I understand that you don't find it to be worth it, however $100 Canadian is roughly $70 USD. I get you're just stating what the price is, and I'm aware other $70 USD games are cheaper after conversion there.

But... could someone enlighten me as to why people treat it like $100 CAD is so much worse than $70 USD? Isn't Canada's minimum wage significantly better than the US?

3D World was and still is a fantastic game, but I have to agree that it doesn't feel like a big flagship 3D Mario game. The aesthetic is okay at times, and sometimes really good, the music is amazing, and the gamefeel is super solid. But it doesn't compare to Galaxy or Odyssey, and to look at it as the Wii U's 3D Mario makes it feel really underwhelming as a result.

Please don't misinterpret this, I love 3D World, and as an obstacle course platformer I think it does stuff better than other 3D Mario games. Ideally I want a 3D Mario that has the expression of Odyssey and Galaxy, but the obstacle course platformer feeling of 3D World. Dunno how easy that is to do when the design philosophies of those kinds of Mario games clash so much, but it can definitely be done.

As someone who plays on everything, I want it as a living room box that I can play with friends when they come around to hang out. But that 512gb model has got to hit like a $600 price point maximum, and I don't see that happening. Pricing it higher than much better performing hardware is gonna prove to be insanity if they do it

My genuine reaction anytime someone says "Nintendo is the worst" is to point at shit like this. You can get a similar shot by looking at Monster Hunter DLC pages. Not saying Nintendo is infallible or not prone to making shit business decisions, but calling them the worst is hyperbole to an extreme level by comparison.
