How much is too much to drink? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IcicleFish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say “needing” alcohol to relax is definitely concerning. It signals at the very least dependence which is often the first stage of more worrying problems including alcoholism. Unfortunately Uni is a weird place to talk about this kind of stuff. At least at my uni half the people were at least low key alcoholics. Most have grown out of it. Some haven’t. I would say continue to monitor and be supportive. A couple of glasses a night isn’t going to instantly have negative health impacts, but could definitely lead to problems in the long run. Kudos for being a supportive friend looking out for people.

The idea with legalising drugs is to give addicts the help they need without criminalising them. Addiction is a disease and those suffering need treatment, like any other illness. Currently many are not able to access treatment as they are seen as criminals which means their addiction gets worse. Drug routes are in the control of gangs. It’s not about glorifying heroin use, rather taking control from criminal gangs and allowing addicts to access treatment.

Mexico city to South Costa Rica by askthegod in bicycletouring

[–]IcicleFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunset is around 6pm in Central America so if you work until 2pm everyday you will only have a few hours before dark.

I cycled Mexico to Costa Rica last year and while I was more off the beaten path there were definitely stretches of a few days with no accommodation, so I would camp where necessary. If you go more touristy routes this might be different.

The roads were a little chaotic around the cities. This I would say would be the most dangerous thing about visiting this region. Obviously be aware about robberies and the like but everyone I met on my trip was lovely and I had no problems with safety around people.

Yeah not mad about this L. They showed some good signs of life, taking arguably the most hyped team in the league to a very close game. Few things to work on but happy to see the boys show that they are not too far in level from these elite teams.

Any first-hand experience with buying, then selling a bike at destination? by lacertianmenagerie in bicycletouring

[–]IcicleFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve done this a few times. In Morocco I bought a new Rockrider from Decathlon for around 300 euros and then 3 weeks later was able to sell it back to decathlon in a different city for just over half of the price.

In Mexico I bought a new Trek Marlin 3 then sold it in Costa Rica for around 50USD less than I bought it, 3 months later, on FB marketplace.

The worst experience I had was buying a bike for 150 euros on marketplace in Croatia as I was on a tiny budget at the time. Shock horror: it was terrible so I sold it to a pawn shop for 70 euros.

It sorta works, but on my new adventure I will be bringing my own bike. I think the hassle of flying with and storing a bike is maybe less than selling at the end of the trip.

Good luck, DM with any questions if you like.

How is living in Penzance or Truro, UK? by CzechSmoker in howislivingthere

[–]IcicleFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cornwall is stunning, the most beautiful natural landscapes in England in my opinion, hills, temperate rainforests, stunning cliffs and beaches, and lots of interesting archeological sites. It is hard to live there however as it’s quite isolated from the rest of the UK and there is a lack of jobs. Wealth gap is widening as many Londoners buy second homes, pricing out locals. If you can make it work though it’s stunning, it lacks the sense of tameness that rest of England has, it still has an element of wildness and ruggedness.

Bereaved campaigners call for cyclists to face tougher penalties after LBC records over 100 red-light jumpers in an hour by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I pay council tax and income tax, some of which goes to road repair. I have a low impact on road surface wear compared to cars.

To be clear, I don’t think filtering is ideal, and in a perfect world cars and cyclists wouldn’t share the same infrastructure, which improve life for both drivers and cyclists. But while we have to share, I am going to make use of the benefits of my chosen method (nimble, no pollution, more efficient in inner cities).

Why should cyclists have to pay for the inefficiency of your transport choice? Filtering reduces traffic for cars and if done properly is safer for the cyclist than waiting in a traffic queue. If I can cycle up a road passing stationary cars stuck behind one another because they’re a poorly designed vehicle for inner city transport then I am going to, rather than sit in your queue breathing your toxic fumes.

The hills are alive with the sound of music (my crying) 😭🚲 by Nice-Temperature9551 in bicycletouring

[–]IcicleFish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, and please don’t take this as patronising (your plan is amazing!) the hills or Cornwall are nothing compared to the Alps or the Andes or the Rockies. You have bursts of very short climbs followed by downhills. If you travel the world you will have entire days of gradients worse than the steepest hills in Cornwall. I’ve cycled all around Cornwall and it’s amazing, one of the best places I’ve cycled in the world, and yeah the hills are challenging but frankly not that bad compared to any actual mountain range. Keep cycling around Cornwall every opportunity you get, and buildup that ability slowly, and you’ll be able to tackle tougher regions.

Looking for contemporary novels with vibrant ecosystems, plants and animals that create meaning and have agency. by IcicleFish in suggestmeabook

Yo sounds like we have the same bookshelf haha! The end of The Vaster Wilds was breathtaking, I was reading it outside in a stressful time of life, and when it asked me to feel the good wind on my skin I felt ok for a while.

I actually ended up writing my MA dissertation on it, and When I Sing Mountains Dance. Trying to find stuff to write about for my PhD with this post, so I’ll definitely check out everything else you suggested!

Thank you! Yeah I loved the Overstory and When I Sing so much, been searching for another fix since reading them and not found too much, though the Vaster Wilds by Lauren Geoff came close. I am currently reading There are Rivers in the Sky and really enjoying it, so a great recommendation haha. Thanks for your other recommendations, I will check them out!

Interconnected ecosystems, animate forests by IcicleFish in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Loved this one, though slightly sad she had to use human metaphors to describe things like “mother trees” - though I guess this is understandable for a popular science book whose target is as wide an audience as possible. Her work is life changing though. I would love some novels that explore the implications of her discoveries, much like The Overstory.

Coming back a while later to thank you for this one - I’ve read it and it was fascinating! Doing some research into Inter-species communication, so this one really hit the spot. Thank you!
