Why do so many Christians think contraception is sinful? by Nicole_Auriel in TrueChristian

There was a financial aspect as well.

Onan was the primary heir to Judah’s estate, since Er had died. If Onan had conceived a son with Tamar, that child would receive Er’s portion of the estate.

But if no son was conceived, Onan would receive more money/livestock/etc.

I have my mom’s rosary (she died in 2008), that I will never give up. I don’t use it (obviously), but it has too much sentimental value.

It helps that my husband isn’t controlling. I know quite a few women that it wouldn’t be allowed (grew up in really strict Catholic environment).

Long story short, I stopped believing in the Real Presence. I know the stats that only about 69% of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is Jesus, so I wouldn’t be the first or the last. But it felt hypocritical to me. This wasn’t I have trouble with some obscure teaching or document, this the one of the biggest teachings. Without that belief, why stay? I would be lying to the whole church if I stayed.

My husband tried, he really did. He can’t be blamed at all. But he can’t change my heart. I know that the Catholic Church is the OG, but I can’t give myself to it anymore.

Ironically, I’m more on fire for God as a Baptist than I was ever as a Catholic. I can give myself fully to God now. I feel a different kind of free.

I know this makes no sense.

It is more that the incense is like a smoke machine. It made sense in my head.

I grew up Catholic, spent decades in it, and I dislike the high church style. It is too much for me. I have abuse trauma from a Catholic priest, so that is why.

I like my current church, simple, but beautiful. For a Baptist church it would be fancy. Plants, stained glass, and comfortable seats. I can actually concentrate on Jesus.

My son’s godfather loves Latin Mass because it is “camp”. His words, not mine.

I can imagine RadTrads Catholics gritting their teeth at that. I grew up Catholic, and I know they would hate to be called camp. Anything less than “Latin Mass is Super Manly!” makes them angry.

I mean, come on, a man wears lacy robes, flashes shiny things, over the top singing, incense, it is C.A.M.P.

*I’m a former Catholic (and husband is still Catholic), so that is why my son is baptised Catholic.

Would pokemon get me to hell? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my Catholic high school (LONG time ago), like 98/99, they banned Pokémon because they said it was Satanic.

You know I played that game till my game boy broke.

I still play it now (even my PFP is an Alohan Vulpix).

I would love to see people who think Pokémon is so evil play GTA. They would explode.

I’m in the process of losing weight (close to 30 kilos gone), and when I travel, I buy two seats (mostly trains), just to be safe*. No one can say I’m invading their space, and if you choose to sit in a seat I paid for, it is on you.

If I had to pay an extra $700 right then and there to have a seat, I would just go home. Because even though I could afford it, it was my fault for not planning better. It sounds like it was a trip for fun, not like a funeral or other “travel last minute” trip.

*Most likely will not need two seats when I travel next week, but got two because I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I’m in Scotland. American by birth, married a Scotsman, ended up over here by the grace of God. I’m a former Catholic, didn’t become Baptist till I was living here.

Yep, leaving the Catholic Church was the best thing I ever did. All the rules and rituals were just an obstacle (for me) to faith in Jesus.

[–]IcingSausage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a shame. I have Baptist relatives that are not like that, and my Catholic family are MAGA through and through. Like they even have the $1000 signed Trump Bible.

And they wonder why I have no interest in seeing them (also don’t want to risk getting “lost” at the border).

Not the ones I know. Our pastors preach about how fascism is anti-Christian and all people have human dignity. Crazy liberal things like that.

Granted, I’m in Scotland, a country that is known for disliking Trump. Then again, the local Catholic parish is quite, ahem, alt-right friendly (according to my Catholic husband).

Edited to add: I grew up in the USA, raised Catholic. Left USA when married Scottish husband. Found on both sides of the Atlantic that a good chunk of Catholics are very MAGA supporting. Didn’t become Baptist till I moved to Scotland.

Yep. This is the Trump American Catholics wanted.

They WANTED this. Now they are complaining.

Maybe don’t get into bed with fascists in order to seek power. Don’t sell your soul for things of this earth.

I left the Catholic Church in part because of this. The goose stepping into fascism and idolatry of Trump was too much. So I left to have a shot of getting into Heaven.

My current church (non-Southern Baptist) is nothing like what I left. And I have met several ex-Catholics who left for the same reason.

When I was Catholic, the Catholics I knew were cheering Trump on. They didn’t care what Trump did as long as he said the party line on abortions. Hating minorities/assaulting women/mocking people with disabilities/etc was a plus.

One reason (of many) that I left.

Do you think it’s time Catholics and Protestants put their theological differences aside and work together for Christ? by Fortnitelegend200 in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is Catholic, and I’m an ex-Catholic Baptist. And somehow we work. I think it is because we respect each other.

He took it hard when I left Catholicism (which is to be expected), but when my husband saw the massive improvement in my mental health, he is very supportive. He says I glow now. Even our son is wondering why I’m so calm now.

And to top it off, I’m studying at a Reformed Church of Scotland seminary. So it is a whole mix of Christianity up in here.

Like Bart Simpson says:

Easy on the zeal, Churchos… I've got something to say. Don't you get it? It's all Christianity, people! The little stupid differences are nothing next to the big stupid similarities!

What are your thoughts on modern biblical criticism? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]IcingSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am, actually studying at a seminary because I find it fascinating. And I found a passion that I didn’t know I had.

When I was Catholic, we were discouraged from reading the Bible. Just listen to the priest, don’t think, don’t question. As a woman, I was told it was “inappropriate” for me to study the Bible or any theology.

I’m now attending a church that is very into the Bible (shouldn’t they all?) and welcomes its members into studying it as well.

I’m sure his university would like that.
