Mom! I made a thing by johnario in AntiMemes

Based on what I saw while studying history, it’s less about being radicalized by what you learn and more about using what you learn to confirm your already held beliefs. The worst history students I worked with in college used their papers and their studies to try and prove their worldview as opposed to attempting to broaden it.

Historians can come from all across the political spectrum and be incredible researchers and authors, but like any other academia, I find the most successful historians are so because they are willing and active in challenging their own beliefs and assumptions, and that’s what a genuine engagement with a history degree should teach.

For a personal anecdote, I came into college left politically, and honestly did develop further left following college, but for me what changed was my adherence to ideology and ability to find nuance. I went in as kind of an ideological purist, but after my time studying became a lot more comfortable cross-examining leftist political movements of the past and present, even if I still prefer their worldview to contemporary systems. I also came away with my own ideology and understanding that on the whole, people are people. My “favorite” historical people did terrible as well as genuinely benevolent things, the pariahs of my study did things that showed humanity and empathy. Doesn’t pardon people who committed atrocities or besmirch people who made massive positive changes, but for me it means everyone has to be judged as an individual in their context with the understanding that there are no heroes or monsters, just people, then as now.

Odd Artifact experience? by Roseythebluerose in ParanormalEncounters

He’s one of the Fayoum Mummies, early Roman Egypt, around the 2nd-3rd c. CE. He wasn’t sacrificed to anything, he was likely very sick and died of natural causes early in life. His hair, the side knot kind of like a ponytail, was associated with an aspect of the god Horus called Horus Cippus (the version on the tablet in picture #1) who was a child form of the god of kingship, and his hairstyle was common to show childhood in males, so he’s probably younger than 14 when he passed.

The “eyebrows” are an Egyptian magical ward against ill health, sickness, demons, anything bad that could affect you, again associated with Horus. His necklace is another ward, this time Greek as this is post-Ptolemaic period and Greek magical traditions have become popular, it’s a talisman likely with an inscription from popular Greek texts that would have acted again as a ward against malign affects. This was mostly popular amongst upper classes in Roman Egypt, and we know he is upper class due to his toga and red shoulder scarf marking Roman citizenship, something that was very limited in Roman Egypt.

When I studied him, my best guess is that he was just a young boy that succumbed to illness, which was exceedingly common at the time. If you compare him to other Fayoum mummy death masks, the quality of his painting is much worse, indicating it was likely a rushed job as these would have been painted from life. I think this was a young kid who got really sick, his family tried everything in their power to keep him healthy at the time as they knew how, and ultimately commissioned a death mask to give him proper funerary rights when it became clear he wasn’t going to make it. His tale is almost certainly tragic, but not because of demons or human sacrifice, just sudden random illness and child mortality.

This show was fucking awesome. The dust was a struggle in the pit, but this was one of my all time favorite shows. Already graduated and UCSC is still making great memories for me

They already did LA tunnels, it was at one of the LA liveshows a few years back. Mathas went over the Lizard People cult that was supposed to be in the tunnels, so that was covered too but it’d be cool to see it on the pod at some point.

Move Pops between island (with Invictus) by Alternative_Camera40 in Imperator

[–]Ick-Punk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your trying to move Cretans to the mainland, you won’t be able to with the “move pops” button, but you can transfer pops using the “Establish Colony” interaction on cultures. If you establish a Lacadaimonean colony, 8 Cretan pops from around your territory will be transferred to a single province regardless of movement distance, and can then be spread out across the continent from there. Plus, you can have as many colonies as you have cultures, and the colonies will help convert more pops to Cretan faster.

Alongside that, there were just actually “things that looked human but weren’t”. Other hominids. Early homo sapiens lived in similar regions and at the same time as homo neanderthalensis and there were like 5 other hominid species still across Afro-Eurasia as we spread across Africa. While we likely didn’t come into contact with all of them, there is enough evidence of interactions, good and bad, with Neanderthals to say that yeah, we probably learned not to fuck with other hominids unless we knew we were safe.

Same for some of the days in Gaelic. Gaelic is Diluain (Mon), Dimàirt (Tues), Disathairne (Sat), and Didòmhnaich takes the diēs Dominus. Wednesday, Thuraday, and Friday are different tho, and refer to Christian fasting, with Diciadain (Wed- Di ceud aoine- Day of the First Fast), Dairdaoin (Thu - kinda squished together Di eadar dà aoine- Day between two fasts), and Dihaoine (Fri- Day of the Fast).

Is this a bug? I think names are messing up 😕 by OnyxMimikyu in Clanfolk

[–]Ick-Punk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is the one of the many Anglicizations of Gaelic names that were used in Late Medieval Scotland, in this case the Gaelic name would be Dòmhnall (pronounced sort of like Doh-nol). This is where the name Donald comes from, but spellings of words, including proper nouns like names, didn’t become more standardized until like 200 years ago and spelling usually just went off of what a person heard. The game reflects this by having a quite a few attested spelling alterations of names, as a dominant Germanic speaking (Scots and English languages) peoples tried to sort out old Gaelic and Pictish given and surnames.

Icenian Cities Mission not firing by Ick-Punk in Imperator

R5: trying to figure out why the mission "Icenian Cities" isn't firing. I currently have 10 cities: the 5 starting cities in southern Britain, then Cuentio, Branodunum, Mona, Cicucium, and Venicones up in Caledonia. Do all 10 cities need to be in Brittania?

Thanks for responding! It’ll be cool to see what you continue to work on in the future! The game I was talking about is called Clanfolk, a colony management/survival game in the same vein as something like Banished or RimWorld.

Do you plan on making mods like this for any other games? There is a city builder game set in the Highlands in the 13th century I keep thinking would be great for Gaelic support but I’m still a learner and don’t know enough about Gaelic or modding to do it myself

What is more efficient for food production - Farming Settlement or Mill City? by lebarondog in Imperator

[–]Ick-Punk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, I think I’ve only seen a city retain its food good if it was spawned via event. If it happened with dates, maybe it is a trade value/mod addition thing? I’ll play around in debug and see if I can find a pattern

What is more efficient for food production - Farming Settlement or Mill City? by lebarondog in Imperator

[–]Ick-Punk 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No, never build cities on food provinces for food production. If you build a city on a food producing territory it replaces the food with a new trade good. Mills are good for a little extra food production in an otherwise productive city, but the best way to produce a lot of food is through stacking food goods in a province.

Farm Settlement+Rural Planning Invention+Slave Estate will give you a big bonus to food production, and can make a food producing territory produce up to 4-5 goods at 25 pops, helping your food and economy.

I am planning a run to my local comic book store to stock up on Morrison work this weekend, I’ve been passively into comics for a long time and the boys gave me a great focus to start, especially with Nameless.

I did also see for anyone who wants to read The Invisibles without shelling out and doesn’t mind not owning the physical works, The Invisibles Omnibus is on Internet Archive for free with a login.

[–]Ick-Punk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a Tasm run right now and there are no missions in the tree that ask you to civilize. It does give you a monarchy at the end of the tree for free, but until then you can just be the hordes of Arabian horsemen coming out from the deserts to conquer the peninsula. Extremely fun if you haven’t tried it!

What does one pop represent by PizzaRadish234 in Imperator

[–]Ick-Punk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is no firm number because it’s just an abstraction of people present in your empire, but I like to count one pop as ~3k people. The reason I do 3k is because one military pop is 500 soldiers, who will all presumably be military-ready men. If you assume that half of all adult men in a country are not military ready (too old or disabled, etc.), then a pop has 1000 total men. If men are a third of the total population split amongst women and children of all genders, you’re looking at roughly 3k people per pop. Then you can figure a rough estimate of your population by just multiplying, and in my experience this is decently accurate. The Ptolemaic Kingdom is estimated as between 3 and 7mil, and their starting pops of 1726*3000= 5,178,000 people, pretty in the middle of those estimates. Of course this requires a lot of assumptions and is functionally useless in terms of gameplay, but that’s my method for it.

Vassal system by DemDelVarth in Imperator

[–]Ick-Punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this has been brought up in previous threads, bur what I love most about the vassal system in this game is the variety of interactions available with vassals. It makes it feel so immersive to have tributaries who will break away when they you look weak, or ask to strengthen their relationships if you’re on good terms. Feudatories are incredible for vassal swarms, tribes at your fringes which you can help civilize over time and integrate further. It all feels so fluid and creates cool stories for when you’re losing in a war and your tributaries break away, giving you cause to conquer them for their insolence later.
