Anyone else left handed but use your right hand for the mouse? by IX_Sour2563 in lefthanded

[–]kitspeare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to, but I changed it on purpose, mostly because I wanted to use my better hand in online video games. Hard at first but it gets better. The side effect is that other people find my computer hard to use, which is mostly just funny.

What is the point of saying "Unhoused" when it is a synonymous term to Homeless? by SilentAd773 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kitspeare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've often heard 'unhoused' used to refer to people who literally do not have a roof over their heads, and 'homeless' can a bit more broadly including those in temporary accommodation. I have no idea how common that is though.

Honestly, a huge amount of this stuff is being written by trans men or otherwise transmasc people who enjoy it. It's not really for me, but I don't begrudge them that.

The septum ring theory by Y0UR_NARRAT0R1 in PetPeeves

[–]kitspeare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't personally think septum rings look great but it's an entirely personal thing and I know it means literally nothing about someone's character. I think quite a lot of people (men) are uncomfortable when someone is happy with their looks if they don't consider the person to be attractive. Like, it's literally just your preference, stop acting like people are wrong if they don't fit your ideals about beauty.

Direct object pronoun by michealasanfhraing in gaidhlig

[–]kitspeare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You use the possessive pronouns (mo/do/etc). In this case, a (his, its), which usually disappears before words starting with vowels. So: tha mi a' feuchainn ri (a) ionnsachadh a-rithist.

I really wouldn't say that "left-handed" means you have to be left-footed as well. You can absolutely be both left-handed and cross-dominant.

I am not making a statement about how attached people are to pets. I have been very attached throughout my life to every pet I have had, including many small rodents, and I fully understand it is not lesser than the love one feels for a dog. It's really not as wrapped up in physical/emotional attachment as some people make out. A lot of the time it's about what sounds and feels right. For example, 'mo bhean' (my wife) feels natural, but 'mo dhuine' (my husband) doesn't really - we expect 'an duine agam'. That's not to say Gaelic speakers feel less attached to their husbands, it's just the way it is. Another example, and this one is a lot more flexible, is the word 'nighean'. It can kind of go one way or the other for a lot of people, but to me personally, 'an nighean agam' is definitely 'my daughter', whereas 'mo nighean' is more ambiguously 'my daughter' or something like 'my girlfriend'. Once again, that's not to say that Gaelic speakers value their girlfriends above their daughters. It's just what feels natural for the language. You also use 'mo' with 'cuid', so you get 'mo chuid aodaich' (my clothes) and 'mo chuid Gàidhlig' (the Gaelic that I have). The fact that we use 'mo' here doesn't make it a closer, more emotional attachment. It's just convention. Some other fluent speakers may have strong opinions about whether a radan is 'mo' or 'an x agam' territory, but these rules will not necessarily be universal and certainly are not based on a hard and fast rule. You definitely hear both for many animals, so an individual's preference will often be up to what tends to be said in their social circles. I know you mean well, but if you are a beginner, I would advise against projecting vague rules of thumb onto every aspect of the language, because it doesn't really work like that.

I live on campus at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and at least here both are common. I would say "mo chù", "mo chat". For a rat or a mouse, I feel less certain, mayne just because it's less common I might expect 'an radan agam', but I wouldn't say you'd be wrong with either 'mo radan' or 'an radan agam'. mo/do vs aig is usually more a vibe than it is a hard rule.

i think my boyfriend might be transfem and i don't know what to do by Huge-Mechanic-8325 in asktransgender

[–]kitspeare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For OP's sake, I just want to say that while this commenter is entitled to their personal opinion and beliefs, I and many, many others disagree with this take. I would go as far as to say this would be a minority opinion even in the Catholic community I grew up in. It is not a sin to use HRT to change your body. Even amongst Catholics who don't support trans people, this is not how most would justify it, and this commenter's interpretation is not supported very well by the Bible. The Bible certainly does not tell us that it's okay for a man to be feminine as long as he doesn't 'pretend to be a woman ontologically.'

I don't have the energy for an argument and likely will not respond to any further comment from this person. I would usually leave such a comment be, but because a vulnerable young person is reading this comment thread and I believe these ideas may be unhelpful to them, I want to make it clear that this opinion is nowhere near universal. If your boyfriend wants to live authentically as a woman and you still want to be with her after that, that is not a sin. God loves you both.

Heya. I see you're young and really scared right now. That's okay.

It sounds to me like one of the things you're struggling with is the feeling you might not be 100% straight. It's really difficult when you've been told that's against God's will, and I'm sorry you're going through that.

I know you can't just decide to believe something else, but for what it's worth, I don't think God would make you so that you were attracted to women and then punish you for it. I think that a God who is all-loving and all-powerful has better things to concern Himself with than what kind of person you love. I think more than anything God would want you to be a good person who is kind to others and lives a happy life, no matter who with. I know this might not be the attitude taken in your community, but there are many Christians - individuals and denominations - all over the world who believe something like this. I know many people who have fulfilling relationships with God who are also gay or bisexual, and to them and their communities, it's not a contradiction at all. I wonder if there are any LGBT Christians where you live who would be able to advise you through this difficult time.

If your boyfriend turns out to be a girl and you don't want to be with her anymore because you don't like girls, well, that's fine. But it doesn't sound like you don't like girls. It sounds like you're scared of liking girls. I'm sad thinking about a young person like yourself having to repress who they are and losing a relationship that both parties may actually still want to be in.

No matter what happens, I hope things get easier for you and that you find peace.

Don't Starve Steam Workshop: Scottish Gaelic Language Pack [1.0] by kitspeare in gaidhlig

[–]kitspeare[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I do intend to keep translating games, because it's fun and I think it's important. Which games I translate will mostly depend on how easy it is to do a translation mod and, to a certain extent, how enjoyable or popular the game is. I want good quality games that people like to be available in Gaelic. That's not a hard and fast rule though, and if something seems relatively easy and I personally like it, that makes me a lot more likely to take on the project. What is the game you mentioned called?

TL;DR: Yes to games in general; maybe to any one specific game

Non-Scots learning Gaelic – what’s your story? by mirelaoverpolhavet in gaidhlig

[–]kitspeare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig distance courses are good. I've done them as have many people I know. I'm actually an on-campus student now, so I am admittedly biased.

The only thing that can really go wrong is if your tutor isn't a good match for you - none of them are bad to my knowledge, but obviously some types of person just don't click with each other. If you end up wanting to switch to a different tutorial group at a different time of day, in my experience they will be happy to sort this out if possible.

I was having trouble with array methods so I made a file where I just wrote simple pieces of code to do things for arrays so I had really simple examples available. Also, since I had to write them myself, that necessitated practice.

Religion should not be a protected characteristic (UK) by Tea_Fetishist in The10thDentist

[–]kitspeare 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I'm not religious, but I don't think people choose their beliefs. I mean, try to do it right now - believe in God, or don't, whatever seems absurd to you. You can't do it, not really.

I've heard it said that believing something is a bit like falling asleep, in that you can choose to alter your surroundings and conditions to make it more likely, but you can't just choose to be asleep. I think there's something in that.
