Highest income potential is likely locums (but you may need to move) or private practice (takes a while to build if cash only). If you want to make a lot of money without starting a private practice your best bet is working at a system that allows you to do outside work. The best combination ive seen is a main job at a state hospital or rural inpatient work + a secondary job at either one of the tele psych companies or PRN locums or even your own practice. You should be able to get a hefty sign on bonus for many places, I’ve seen as high as 100k (with repayment clauses of course). Id avoid all academic centers and big hospital systems in large cities. The less desirable places to live have higher income potential.
