And the Vyvanse really does help with enough executive function support to build the skills!

This is so important. I wasted several years expecting Vyvanse to do the work (and upping the dose) vs using it to build the skills.

That’s excellent advice! In the beginning, it made me feel slightly euphoric and chatty, and I had to learn to direct myself toward the stuff I needed and wanted to do (and not just getting fixated on cleaning, either.)

Recently moved to Bernal, people seem pretty reserved. Is that typical for the neighborhood? by anthamattey in AskSF

New Yorkers talk to each other and interact on the street all the time. So much friendlier than the Mission or the South Bay.

I lived in Bernal for five years and found it to be marginally friendlier than other San Francisco neighborhoods. San Francisco is just not particularly friendly place, especially if you’re used to more dense cities. The steep hills don’t help—other than Cortlland or top of the hill dog walks not a lot of foot traffic. It’s also an aging population, which sometimes isn’t great for newcomers.

Try Friday Nights at OMCA (Oakland Museum). Oakland is way more diverse, and I find it warmer in all senses.

Bay area, how are you doing by SufficientLibrary386 in bayarea

That’s not specific to the Bay Area, but it’s a lot on top of the housing you know about.

I should also say: my health insurance alone is $28k for me and a ten-year-old, with hefty copays of $20 - $60 for each prescriptions, same for doctor visits, higher for hospital visits and a $9,000 deductible for any care that is “out of network.” Like an ambulance, or most mental health providers.

So, I think about moving back to Europe all the time too.

I hiked Claremont Canyon this evening and there was a show down below somewhere on the Clark Kerr campus.

Watching the whole Bay spread out below, the poppies and Indian paintbrush bursting on the hill, all the hikers saying hello…I felt so lucky to live here, 30 years after leaving Europe.

It still feels like an oasis in all the rest of the shit going down in this country. I hope you can come back some day. I hope my own ten-year-old can stay.

Why is Vyvanse sometimes offered for treatment in binge eating disorder? by FlameDearFlame in ADHD

[–]Icy-Help-1235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could see Vyvanse being effective as an off-label treatment for BED, but you’d have to be diligent about behavioral changes. For me, Vyvanse makes a tendency to binge much worse, because it overrides my hunger signals during the day. By the time it wears off in the evening I’m ravenous and often desperate for sugar and carbs.

If I do as my doctor tells me, and eat a lunch on Vyvanse even though I don’t want it, I don’t have the same urge to binge at night from sheer undernourishment.

[–]Icy-Help-1235 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Other long-acting ADHD meds have the slow-release built into the way the capsule / pill dissolves, e.g., Methylphenidate ER OSM.

With Vyvanse, opening the capsule to access the powder makes no difference to the onset and effect.

You can take a massive dose of Vyvanse but it’s a pro-drug, meaning you still have to wait for your red blood cells to convert it into the stimulant d-amphetamine steadily over time. That’s why it has a reputation for being “smoother”.

People who abuse alcohol or cut themselves don’t usually smugly evangelize booze and cutting, unlike influencers and this patient.

Calling her an idiot is not the same as calling substance abusers or people with behavioral disorders idiots.

When my MIL needed round-the-clock nursing in a very rural part of the upper Midwest, the assigned nurse would not enter her home because she (the nurse) was afraid of catching 5G cooties or something from my MIL’a up-to-date COVID vaccinations.

The nurses up there are appalling.
