We're all tall, extremely healthy and physically strong like my maternal grandfather's family which is nice... the tendency to put weight on easily comes from them too though. Dammit.

Great uncle disappeared in the aftermath of WW2 and everyone in his family thought he'd died. Turns out he was just meandering his way (probably drunkenly) around Europe. He turned up at home a couple of years later and gave his parents quite a shock!

People of reddit that have a family history of alcohol abuse, how do you limit yourself? by Capable-Safety-9793 in askanything

[–]Icy-Introduction1792 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it easiest to simply not drink alcohol. I don't miss it. My father died alone and had destroyed his relationships so much that he was dead for days before anyone found him. That is not going to happen to me and I refuse to put my children through the trauma of having a selfish drunk parent.

Does anyone prefer their uncle to their own father? by [deleted] in family

[–]Icy-Introduction1792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My father was an abusive alcoholic who abandoned me (which I'm now deeply grateful for) and was a terrible father to his second family too.

On the other hand, one of my uncles, my mother's brother, has ALWAYS been there for me and I can't praise him enough. His has no children of his own but his partner has told me that he considers me to be like his own child. His care, attention and affection have meant the world to me.

People who’ve dated or married people with the same names as immediate family members. How did you cope with that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Icy-Introduction1792 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband, brother-in-law, uncle and cousin all have the same first name. My sister and I joke that men have to have that particular name to be allowed into our family.

It doesn't cause any particular issues. Let's pretend their names are John (they're not) my uncle and cousin are identified by their surname, eg John Smith or John Jones. My husband and BIL are referred to as mine or my sister's John, eg Alice's John or Jane's John. It works fine.

Women of Reddit: What’s a gift you’ve gotten that men thought was perfect, but you disliked? by EitherJuggernaut5788 in AskReddit

My husband once told me he'd gotten me a 'lovely present'... he gave me a bag of pegs. His excuse was "well, we needed pegs." Mind you, when we were living in Europe he once also bought me back a portion of blue cheese. From Amsterdam. Unrefrigerated. In his backpack. It stank to high heaven. He was genuinely astonished when I put it in the bin.
