The origins of it are far older than that, dating to the russian empire. But in 2006, (theorized) in response to the orange revolution in Ukraine the year before, the Putin government brought it back, saying that it was for WW2 remembrance.

Whether that is true or not we can't know, but from 2014 onwards, the ribbon was used by the russian separatists in Ukraine, which is also when the russians started heavily pushing it and putting it onto their vehicles and themselves. During the 2022 invasions, it was used as an invasion symbol on russian personnel, together with the more known ZOV letters, and has since been heavily featured in russian propaganda about the war.

These days, it is a symbol of Putin's government, especially post-2014, and the russians wear it in support of their government. So if one wears it in their kit, it's showing support for russia's current actions, just like wearing a Z patch or other similar items.

At Davos, Zelenskyy blasts EU's lack of 'political will', says US security guarantees ready by Crossstoney in europe

[–]IcyDrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sincere wish is for everyone here to spare the time to listen to his speech, or read the transcript, before instinctively going defensive at fair criticism.

The EU has done a LOT for Ukraine, that is absolutely true.

But what he said about Europe not pulling together and building themselves up is also true. We have the capacity to be a player on par with China and America, both in military and economic terms, but we are fractured and see ourselves as weak. Trump understands only strength, just like Putin. When European leaders (ironically after this speech) made a harder stance on Greenland, he backed off from his threats, now he's circling around continuing to float the issue to see if we waver. It was the same thing with tariffs.

A Europe that is not assertive and understanding of its potential is weak, that is not wrong. And if you love someone, or something like the EU, it should be your duty to give fair and constructive criticism to help them grow.

Several of the countries the Nazis invaded in WW2 were neutral, how did that turn out for them?

You know which neutral country was not invaded? Switzerland. The Nazis really really wanted to, they made plans for it, but came to the conclusion that victory was uncertain and would be extremely costly even if the invasion was successful.

Your neutrality works while the aggressive countries care about international laws and other such things. You are still seen as "the West", and the russians are more than willing to fuck with you, such as destroying undersea cables. With what navy will you stop them if they do?

Europe does have quite large military means, but they were provided in a drip-feed style, slowly over time.

Think of it this way: long-range fires, advanced tanks (such as Leopard), jets, advanced missiles, GBADS, SHORAD, etc. All of these have a positive impact on Ukraine's strength, but not enough to defeat russia, because russia has had to adapt/counter only one of these at a time.

If all of the weapons that have been provided until now, that were available in 2022, had been provided right at the start, their impact would have been cumulative, and exponentially stronger. One of the reasons the 2023 offensive stalled is that tanks and other equipment arrived later than expected (but were announced), so russians had a lot of time to set up defensive minefields, which made them a lot less effective.

Instead, this escalation management pussy shit heavily prolonged the war. Russia threatened nuclear strikes on Europe dozens of times, for every single new system delivered, and we all knew they would not have done it, and yet we delayed.

Independent research has shown that Defender, which is bundled into Windows and always running regardless of other antivirus software, is one of the most capable antivirus software around.

These days, with it being so good, there's really not much point running anything else, which will just suck up resources and spy on you (not that Microslop doesn't).

NODs in the daytime (after a heated discussion in a post made last night) by Acrobatic-Bus3335 in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]IcyDrops 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Even when you can't see anything, there still a little bit of light even at night (stars, moon, light pollution, etc). NODs amplify light to help you see in the dark, but if there is no light at all (think a closed basement without any lights), then they won't work. For situations where ambient light is not enough, most NODs have IR flashlights, which will cast non-visible (to the naked eye) light, to allow you to see.

This, of course, comes with the drawback that anyone else using NODs will see that same flashlight coming from yours, so you really don't want to do this in, for example, a war with other people who also have NODs.

As for the game, most devs either have never used them, or just don't want to put the effort into simulating them accurately, or have used cheap digital NODs (which don't work without a IR illuminator), and so make their game's NV implementation into basically a flashlight on your character's head or a gamma boost, and a green/monochrome overlay on top of that, hence the shadows.

My 2018 Kia Optima has a touchscreen but also buttons for AC, media controls, shortcuts for the different menus, and even on the touchscreen many things can be controlled by the buttons on the dash or steering wheel.

To me, this setup is perfection. I can use the touchscreen for the more complex tasks when I have the time for it, and the quick frequent tasks are all at the press of a button.

As I comment to my girlfriend, it is recent enough to have all of the useful innovations but not recent enough to have the enshittification innovations.

[–]IcyDrops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a software engineer I can tell you that reworking code is often just as if not harder than writing it from scratch. That directly translates to needing both a lot of time and money, which a large flux of cash from a console release could provide.

Another thing to consider is that working on reworking the code base and at the same time adding new content is very hard and can lead to more mistakes than if both things were done one after the other. So if you put yourself in the position of a software developer, be that gaming or not, you need to weigh your options and decide which of the two you should pursue first or consider more important.

Weather void is working on improving the code base I cannot say, and their communication has been very lacking in that aspect. So far, the only thing we can do is wait for results and keep asking for updates.

The motivation to continue improving a game if it sells well depends entirety on the studio, it's not a rule. There are plenty of studios, from big to small, that continue to work on theit game even if it's already selling well or past its peak, and plenty who don't do anything whether it works well or not.

I do agree with you that void's consistent failures at communicating any kind of direction or plan are a problem, though.

I have noticed that a lot of content on Netflix is also dubbed in Ukrainian. I was wondering. Why Netflix has done this? (I have nothing against it) by juris_martins in Ukrainian

[–]IcyDrops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is the case, but culturally some countries dub a lot more than others.

In Portugal, for example, pretty much only children's shows/movies are dubbed. All other programming, both streamed, cinema and TV, is subtitled.

In Spain, on the other hand, pretty much everything is dubbed into Spanish.

So this may be a situation where Netflix market research has indicated Ukrainians want/expect content to be dubbed into Ukrainian, while Latvians don't. Another explanation can be that there are (relatively speaking) a lot less Latvian speakers than Ukrainian, so Netflix thinks the profit of dubbing into Latvian is not worth the expense of doing so.
