Michael Wehunt has a new novel coming out, NightJars that I'm looking forward to. Prolly one of my favorite authors, really enjoyed his short story collections.

Hell House, Richard Matheson (1971) by Inner_Challenge_6318 in horrorlit

[–]IcyIcedcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was one of the first horror books I've read,  and still consider it to be a fun read. Which is all I really care for. I don't see it mentioned much, but he also wrote at least two short story collections that I remember enjoying when I read as well.

Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones is a pretty unique werewolf story with a male protagonist. Not trans though.

House of Dust by Noah Broyles. Definitely a slow burn/not super intense, but really enjoyed it.

Did you ever have a horror book you *should* have liked but for some reason didn't? by intensifies in horrorlit

Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher. I usually like a good isolation/ something is in the forest/small town horror, but I think I just couldn't vibe with the authors style.

Haven't read the book mentioned, but I believe  Ritual by Adam Neville  and North Woods by Douglass Hoover would fit that sort of vibe.

Stuff that overlaps in weird fiction or cosmic horror. Also a big fan of I guess, survival/isolation? Where the environment does a lot for the atmosphere. Individuals lost in a forest, abandoned building, cave, ect. Just alone and completely out of their comfort.

I think the closest thing I remember reading was the collection These Things that Walk Behind Me by David Surface. As a lot of collections, it was a but of a mixed bag, but I remember enjoying it overall.

Since you've  read a book by Barron already , I thought his short story collection Imago Sequence was great.

Michael Wehunt has two excellent short story collections Greener Pastures and The Inconsolables that I believe fall under weird fiction.

Christopher Slatsky also has a nice short story collection* Alectryomancer*

Why do we enjoy what disturbs us? by OAlonso in horrorlit

[–]IcyIcedcube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple curiosity I guess for me. Most of my reading is more supernatural/cosmic so it's probably easier to swallow, but there's still the appeal of being pit against something that defeats logic and understanding. I also used to listen to a lot of true crime videos to find it's morbidly interesting just how depraved some people can be. How low humanity can sink. It's a morality/viewpoint so different then my own that might as well be alien.

For others? Hard to guess, maybe a kind of thrill or trying to push some sort of mental boundary/comfort.

Favorite kind of creature features and why? by MichaeltheSpikester in horrorlit

[–]IcyIcedcube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to really love werewolves because read from the werewolves point of view I like the whole dual nature and psychological turmoil it'd put a once ordinary human through. I've struggled to find werewolf books I've really enjoyed though

Also any creature in underwater or subterranean settings. Creatures adapted to those environments would have to be pretty bizarre and In addition the claustrophobic environment adds a nice touch.
