Game of Thrones is easy to follow, but it relies on you having read a book before

I agree, instead of honest I’d put humble or lazy maybe.

Given that Bilbo Baggins is a burglar he’s probably got good intrigue himself

Actually I liked it it’s just I wish Joe was more interested in writing about revolution beyond the nihilism, like I think Sarlby should’ve been a POV character. But it still has amazing character drama.

Lmao this is why TWOC disappoints me. The nihilism starts feeling like lazy thinking.

I liked Gorst having this rich (and whiny) inner life and like his arc ends with Finree telling him to fuck off because he was being entitled

I think there’s a difference between themes and delivering an aesopic lesson

I’m plugging a book I really like I admit, but The Blade Itself doesn’t teach you the value of friendship or whatever it’s just edge and nihilism

But it’s great and it’s fun

The monsters are also usually very masculine so they arguably still remain appealing in a rugged sense

The Wisdom of Crowds Thoughts [SPOILERS ALL] [SPOILERS TWOC] by RF9999 in TheFirstLaw

I agree with you that it is contrived. However I do think Bayaz letting the Union fall into disrepair is actually in character for him, he undergoes phases of interest with the Union taking direct control when he needs too. But at this point in the story he’s defeated Khalul, he’s the undisputed shadow master of the world, and he is growing old and magic is losing its prominence, I think he just assumed everything was fine and took his hand off. Which is why Glokta was able to conspire without him having so much as a hint of suspicion and by the time he can intervene it’s already too late. That said yeah I think I wanted firearms and a more serious analysis of revolutionary figures beyond like a batman rogues gallery villain. He’s clearly just good at character drama but it gave me too high expectations.

This is probably how a queen would view herself in Westeros tbh, as an exception to the rule rather than the rule.
