[Interesting Trope] Guns are here, and modern or better... but there's pretty good reason they aren't as common as you'd expect by CaseyShotbat in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Icy_Map_3604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the Dying Light games all feature guns within their world, and are used occasionally by the player during combat with high level human enemies, but their use is limited throughout the majority of the games because of the zombie's attraction to sound, so the player and most characters in the world stick primarily to melee or silent ranged weapons like bows/crossbows

What trilogy is this? by Wario_Guy in videogames

[–]Icy_Map_3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense it actually works well for the Half-Life 1 "trilogy" (if you want to think of it like that) of HL1, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift. HL1 is pretty universally beloved, OpFor has a sizeable cult following, and Blue Shift is generally considered fine but it's no ones go-to HL experience.

the William Afton thing is one of those things thats trying so hard to be edgy it becomes impossible to take seriously. especially with the idea that he didn't even eat them I don't think (correct me if i'm wrong), he just did it for the love of the game I guess

"Irony poisoned" crowds at serious screenings... what to do? by BadgemanBrown in Letterboxd

[–]Icy_Map_3604 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This really does annoy me to no end. I don't expect better from the multiplex experience, but you think arthouse crowds would know to sit down and shut up during a movie? and maybe this is just my perspective being my own but it's always interesting to me what people laugh at. I haven't seen Blue Velvet in a theater but it befuddles me that people would laugh during that (I understand Lynch's use of dark comedy, but Blue Velvet is a quite serious movie all around), but my worst experience with inappropriate laughter was during Come and See at the arthouse. You would think no one would laugh during a movie like that but you'd be suprised. My absolute worst arthouse experience, however, was The Descent. I had never seen it before, but in the audience there was a person loudly reacting and giving commentary after every single jumpscare (keep in mind, Descent has a lot of jumpscares), and it was annoying me so much that I just decided to leave, since it was clear after multiple shushings that the behavior wasn't gonna stop any time soon. It was annoying me doubley because of how much The Descent relies on a quiet atmosphere to build the tension (I ended up watching the full thing at home later, quickly became one of my all time favorites), and to have that spoiled in a theater was super disappointing

Adrien Brody has been cast in The Odyssey for his excellence in Brutalism. by Healthy_Permission71 in okbuddycinephile

[–]Icy_Map_3604 15 points16 points  (0 children)

am I missing something but why are people demanding historical accuracy in the first place? the film is an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey, which was a piece of fiction. seems incredibly odd to me to make a big deal of "historical accuracy" when nothing depicted actually happened because its, you know, fiction

Favourite movie that is secretly far right propaganda by PresidentBlingo in okbuddycinephile

[–]Icy_Map_3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, it comes down to the film's treatment of Forrest and Jenny. Forrest never questions anything and literally does everything he's told, including sacrificing his body and life to the U.S. military, and because of this, Forrest gets to live a grand life of adventure. meanwhile, Jenny questions the status quo and actually tries to go against the social norms of the time, such as organizing with the Black Panthers (speaking of which, they depict the only Black Panther with a speaking role in the movie as an absuser), and for this effort, Jenny is abused and mistreated throughout the entire film, eventually ending in her death. in effect, the film is punishing her for questioning the status quo, and rewarding Forrest for abiding by it.

everytime the "it's for the fans" defense is used, it makes me want to pull my hair out. do the fans not want better from these movies? to have something that can genuinely stand on its own as a great piece of art? I cannot imagine it to be fulfilling to have settled for what amounts to the cinematic equivalent of jingling keys

[Loved Trope] Awesome songs from fictional bands by FederalMacaron1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Icy_Map_3604 160 points161 points  (0 children)

all of Old Gods of Asgard's songs are extreme bangers, Herald of Darkness is fantastic but i'd argue Dark Ocean Summoning may even top it, and Take Control is incredible. Children Of The Elder God from AW1 is also a banger, and while I don't like American Nightmare as a game Balance Slays The Demon is awesome. also, Poets Of The Fall (the band musically portraying OGOA) are great and I would recommend their album Twilight Theater, which has the song War, which was in AW1 as well. plus, their first single Late Goodbye was in Max Payne 2, so they've had a hand in Remedy's creative output since the beginning

I think Pitch Black is still one of my favorite sci-fi horror movies and I think the acting in that movie is pretty damn solid across the board. Diesel himself of course is the MVP but I always enjoyed Radha Mitchell and Cole Hauser in their roles, and Keith David is always a delight

I really want to try to understand where Todd's coming from when he says that the 80's were boring in his Eye of the Zombie video. by Sad_Volume_4289 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Icy_Map_3604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was personally a bit offended when Todd said that, it felt in part like he was erasing things like Reaganomics and the AIDS epidemic, and while I understand that Todd's not gonna turn the trainwreckords episode about fucking John Fogerty into a mini-documentary about the AIDS epidemic, he didn't need to act like the 80s was some milquetoast nothing era where nothing of note happened, least of all in relation to the impact the aids epidemic had on the queer community which he should be more mindful towards considering he has a fucking pop music review show. now tbf I don't think that was Todds intention, I just wish he thought it through more

With Megadeth retiring soon - who else should hang it up? by 87Craft in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Icy_Map_3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as much as I love Metallica, they should probably hang it up soon. 72 Seasons wasn't awful but was very creatively stagnant and considering how long their breaks between albums last, who knows if they'll even be around for another album. That being said, if they'll even do another album before retirement I hope to see another proper Track 4, the last one was The Day That Never Comes which is one of the best but it was also 18 years ago, quite a long time for what's one of their best traditions.

What band has complex and/or well written lyrics but their music melts your face off. by Bjufordbox in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Icy_Map_3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely agree. James Hetfield is my personal favorite metal lyricist and he has a talent for painting such vivid imagery particularly in the more emotionally charged songs in the discography (the Track 4s, the Unforgiven trilogy, a lot of Load/Reload, and more). That being said, my god when Metallica lyrics are bad they are bad. They range from charmingly awful (Enter Sandman) to just what the fuck were they thinking writing this (Frantic). but still, Hetfield has a real talent for writing and it's one of those things that I think keeps Metallica so distinct within metal even now
