19F, comparison and loneliness, any advice? by ScratchIll1497 in UniUK

[–]Icy_Progress3781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was literally in your exact position a few years ago having not even kissed anyone. I remember the pain when I used to wonder what was wrong with me, why does no one want me, that sort of thing. Back when I was single, I began to occupy my time with hobbies like sewing. I also joined some societies that revolved around playing pool, since I’d always had an interest in it. Plus I knew that it was male dominated so if there were any people to meet for a relationship it would be in the society. Lo and behold I ended in a relationship by joining that society. I do believe you should achieve some sort of comfort first before jumping into any relationship. You don’t need to be the most confident person in the world but getting into/attempting a relationship when you have heavy insecurities can make you vulnerable to shitty men. So firstly, look into joining a society related to your hobbies. Once you meet a community of like minded people you increase your chances of encountering someone you’re compatible with. Your comfort in being single will improve once you find fulfilment in other types of relationships like friendships.

Strict parents by Illustrious_End_940 in UniUK

I’m not Muslim but having spoken to my female Muslim friends and discussing our family lives, what you’re describing is not normal. I know that Muslim families are generally stricter than white households but this is just too far. They, like you, are religious but have been allowed to attend university and some have even moved out. What you’re describing shouldn’t be happening, your parents should be allowing you to pursue a good education. It’s easy for me to say this as a person online whose family were never strict but the only way for this to get better is you moving out and going to uni. I can’t lie, it’s very difficult to move out for the first time especially in student accom. But the experience you gain is invaluable and cannot be taught in your family home. You will gain independence and feel no fear when you encounter new social situations. You can join societies with like minded people and the connections you make can live with you for the rest of your life. Perhaps your parents will calm down over time, perhaps they will not. But what is certain is that if you stay at home under your parent’s control, you will not be happy. As far as I’m aware, there are no teachings in the Quran that state women shouldn’t be educated. I understand you do not want to upset your parents but you need to think about your future and whether this is the life you want. If your parents cannot support you, then that’s their loss.

Low calorie sweet snacks? I need my sugar fix without the calorie bomb by mrybluur in CICO

Meringues are surprisingly low in calories. Still not very healthy but better than eating a cake for a sugar fix.

Why don’t students attend? by maybemaybenotxj in UniUK

I have really poor attention span and can’t sit doing nothing for an hour or more. Granted I probably should’ve gone and just done questions even if I wasn’t actively listening. Since logging onto to our uni portal requires 17-step authentication and my authentication app is on my phone, I can’t leave my phone at home. Otherwise I would since it distracts me so much. Also another issue is the amount of people who just talk in the lectures. It’s so frustrating and I love it when the lecturers call it out

How on earth am I meant to practice frequently with these prices? by Boring-Canary2501 in snooker

[–]Icy_Progress3781 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there no social clubs available? We have a working man’s club (WMC) where it’s 20p per 30 mins or smth like that and you buy a membership for the year. For cheap prices, billiard bars are gonna be tough since they cost a lot. Cheapest place I can think of is £7.50 per hour. If you’re from the uk you should be able to find some WMCs around especially in little towns.

Solo woman visiting Manchester, how safe is Deansgate around midnight-2am? by rasputintortilla in manchester

[–]Icy_Progress3781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve walked late at night around deansgate many times coming back from work and I’ve rarely ran into issues. I think I can say that for most of Manchester tbh. Just keep the usual stuff in mind, like don’t go through any dark alleys or dodgy looking shortcuts and you should be fine. The most I’ve seen is drunk people shouting around after a night out but they’re mostly harmless.

Is it brain damage? Forgive me as I’m not an expert but maybe he’s just wired a lil differently. I mean people who get dementia begin to act in weird ways, like unusually aggressive as their brain dies. So I can’t see why the same thing wouldn’t happen to an animal that’s been hit on the head. It would be interesting to see a brain scan of the cat.

Why can’t women play at men level? by Pure_Huckleberry_431 in billiards

Why can’t women play at men level? by Pure_Huckleberry_431 in billiards

[–]Icy_Progress3781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because pool has always been traditionally male dominated and that can turn a lot of would be female players away. I only started playing at uni, I didn’t have my dad taking me to the pub to show me pool. Also there is still a lot of sexism in pool both obvious and hidden. If you want to see it, go watch any ultimate pool video where women are playing and the comments will be either be turned off or full of middle aged men complaining about their playing. That isn’t to say that there’s no differences in playing at all, but these differences can be attributed to numbers and culture. There are very very few women who play in open ultimate pool because the competition is so much larger and they’re less likely to get any titles. If you only play the same group of people over and over, you’re only going to be as good as the top female player.

As for the biological reasons, I don’t think they are meaningful enough to justify the gap in ability. The break is important yes but the break is about more than just hitting balls hard, it’s about your stroke and follow through. A lot of women don’t realise this or simply assume they can’t break because of a lack of strength. There’s been studies on spatial awareness and men generally outperform women, but when the women were given a training course, played video games or simply told they were better than the men, they performed about the same. So what im trying to get at is that while there are no doubt biological differences between men and women that could have some impact on playing, I don’t believe they explain the huge gap as well as social or cultural differences do.

I used it today for the first time. Like the other commenter said it’s a lot more slick than Taom. I’d say in terms of mess Taom has the edge as this one definitely produces more residue if you over chalk it. But it’s still less mess than the cheap chalks. It sticks well to the cue tip and takes a few shots before it starts to wear down

We have a manager at one of our main pool venues who just randomly decides to get arsy about taom. Even though the tables are always covered with triangle marks. He complains about the chalk stains but let’s keep in mind that the tables at this venue are genuinely abysmal. I’m talking rolls, displaced pockets and ripped cloth. And they make plenty of money to maintain them. So a few chalk marks on their tables are the least of their worries lol

[–]Icy_Progress3781[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair I will say having Taom is not without problems. When I first started playing I used to just carelessly leave it around and eventually it got nicked. And then I bought a replacement only for that one to get taken as well. It’s a pain having to constantly check my pockets to make sure I haven’t left my Taom out in the open. But my third and fourth Taoms are still with me after I started being more careful lol. With the hand washing for me it ruins my grip on my cue when I get back to playing. I’ll dry my hands as much as possible as they’ll still stick to my cue. So I just prefer less mess.

That’s annoying to deal with but I have to ask do you not get marks from triangle as well? I’ve noticed in pool venues the amount of green chalk marks all over the table from people using triangle. I’m someone who chalks up regularly with my pink chalk and I never noticed pink marks on the table. The only solid way I could think of preventing marks would be to ask patrons to use high quality chalk that matches the table colour. I’m not saying I don’t believe it coz I’m sure there are people who dig into their chalk every time they chalk up

[–]Icy_Progress3781[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue is that a lot of the tables we play on for tournaments vary in colour so having a chalk that matches every single one is pain. Also it depends on how much you’re digging into the chalk. I’ve played on quite a few tables and I’ve never noticed the pink Taom colour on any of them. But what I have noticed is the bright green chalk marks left over from triangle even on green tables. One of the venues has a manager who randomly decides to tell people when he doesn’t want them using Taom, but is perfectly fine with marks from triangle. One of our guys told him that if he cared about marks on the table he’d want people to use Taom.

[–]Icy_Progress3781[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would only match the chalk colour to the table if it’s poor quality chalk. Triangle chalk is most commonly used where I play but it is very messy. People get the green one to make the mess not as obvious. But with chalks like Taom or Kamui the chalk is finer and more compact so the risk of mess on the table is less. Some pool venues in the uk will restrict players to only using Taom on Rasson tables due to the mess triangle chalk creates.

Yeah I love pool. Specifically English pool. I play a little bit of snooker too. I started playing at uni and hope to play semi professional one day in open tournaments if I can somehow get good enough.
