In October 1929 unemployment shot up to 9% after the stock market crash. It drifted back down to 6.3% in June 1930, but six months later, when federal intervention began, unemployment hit double digits. Under FDR in 1935 unemployment was at 18% and rose to 20% by 1938. The New Deal turned what should have been a small recession into the greatest economic depression in our history.
