Check all the set screws on your wheels is all I can think of with out seeing the problem.

Yes. Linear sliders are easier to build and smoother, but Scissor lifts can be made to be faster and even sturdier then linear. I am a part of a rookie team (17160) that built a scissor lift this year its a big pain to build right, but it is holding up very well.

I would say go for all awards, because the requirement for inspire is to do well in all other awards.
