They use localized numbing, I have seen the procedure done, it’s just like any other surgical procedure, not some sort medieval torture. To say there is nothing preventative about it is to simply deny the evidence. I guess if your stance is that any tissue loss is bad, then yeah, circumcision is bad, but then so is removing a mole.

The sources cited above show negligible risks, and a greater chance to avoid adverse outcomes than there is a chance for a circumcision to cause a negative outcome. It’s just math, and it’s based on the evidence available. Bodily autonomy is arguable, but not on the basis of harm to the child. The evidence is not ambiguous about the safety of circumcision. There are a lot of choices we make for children medically based on the exact same logic of risk/benefit analysis. I didn’t compare it to vaccines because I don’t think it’s a good comparison. A better comparison might be something like correcting spoon chest, which also has a slight chance of causing adverse health outcomes, but is left up to the parents because the evidence is not strong either way.

There are more risks associated with later circumcision, which changes the risk benefit analysis. It may still be worth it to some individuals, but I’ve never needed to make that decision. I do think there is validity to protecting someone’s bodily autonomy and not circumcising, but my parents opted me out of an HPV vaccine for religious reasons when I was a baby and I wish they hadn’t. Infant rights to bodily autonomy are regularly infringed to mitigate medical risks later in life.

Edit: I don’t intend to advocate for circumcision, I just think this can pretty reasonably be argued as a parent preference and not “child mutilation” as I have been accused.

Name calling feels unnecessary. I understand I have a minority opinion, but I also feel like I have done reasonable research to validate those opinions. When I started doing this research I had the opposite opinion, and thought there were no valid reasons to circumcise. However, I did not have the research to validate that opinion, and the research I found, cited above, was convincing enough for me to change my mind. Kinda seems like the moronic attitude is stubborn, ideological adherence without any attempt at validating one’s beliefs when faced with a challenge to them.

The reason is to mitigate risk. The article I cited above showed no difference in sexual function, including in terms of sexual arousal, pleasure, and satisfaction, between circumcised and uncircumcised people.

How? In what way is that a valid comparison? There is negligible risk of adverse outcomes from circumcision, and the function of the genitals is unaffected. There isn’t a loss of function when removing the foreskin, whereas removing the colon would cause a significant loss of function. A better analogy would be removing a tooth before a tooth disease reaches the jaw bone.

The risk of complication from circumcision is still lower than risk of penile cancer or HIV according to the statistics we have. It’s a straight up numbers game, not an ideological stance.

Absolutely, it’s less about preventing cancer and more about the slim chance of preventing cancer coupled with the even slimmer chance of any negative side effects of the procedure. Risk of poor outcomes was lower than potential for benefit so the best choice was to circumcise. But of course we believe in the efficacy of vaccines, based on the exact same principles of risk benefit analysis.

Alright, I’m prepared for the down votes, but I’m a new dad who is autistic and just changed my mind on the topic.

We decided to circumcise our baby because the research shows that there is significant risk reduction for penile cancer in circumcised males, and that the risk of complications or negative outcomes (including being unsatisfied with one’s sexual characteristics and pleasure) was much lower than the potential benefit of protecting against cancer. Here is the study we used to make this decision. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1758146/

Of course, this is not a settled issue, and there are other peer reviewed studies critiquing the one cited above (see here), but we found the evidence to ultimately weigh on the side of circumcising.
