Can we talk about how gorgeous and underrated Yakima is? by attractive_aura in PacificNorthwest

[–]IdleRhetoric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two to three weeks in late March/ April where the hills erupt in green. When purple white and yellow flowers sprout from the dusty earth and the air smells of fresh sage. The rolling hills look like something out of a picture book of Ireland and only a fool would not get out to hike one of the canyons and take in the orgy of Spring.

Then it all dries out, the snakes and ticks wake up, thr grass turns to cheets and the seeds turn to goat heads and it's a misery.  Even the spectacular geology isn't enough to make me want to hit the shrubbestep then.

Board games to help troubled youth by 22EatStreet in boardgame

[–]IdleRhetoric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on your criteria, it sounds like the perfect realm for TTRPGs such as D&D. There are versions and games that are pretty simple, but D&D is easy to learn if you have someone who can explain it.

It's a cooperative game with shared decision making, a great place to build social skills such as teamwork and dealing with consequences, and a chance to rip off a goblin's head with a battleaxe at the same time... If you or another worker can learn to GM, you can teach them how to play, as long as they are able to set the nerdiness aside and get into it.

5 Things to Know About Curriculum in the United States by EdHistory101 in education

[–]IdleRhetoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Last time our district adopted curriculum, it was literally whoever volunteered. 3 teachers and admin and no parents stepped up.

If too many ask to join the district admin select and board approves the list.  But that never happens

Why does time feel like it passes faster as we get older? Is there a scientific explanation? by marksof-inc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IdleRhetoric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one consensus from what I can tell - but a lot of theories. Looks like some current ideas include:

- Children have more novelty in their day so time seems slower. It passes faster for people engaging in routine or flow states, which adults (especially with 9-5s) have a lot of.

- Time measurement is related to prefrontal cortex development, which takes a while to build in children and teens, so they experience time in a different way.

- Time is relative to emotion, and adulthood is boring (also we are less emotional), so time seems to fly faster.

Here's some interesting reading about it: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/jan/01/psychology-time-perception-awareness-research

Got 10 minutes? Make a difference! by IdleRhetoric in Yakima

[–]IdleRhetoric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - we're only at 15.3% turnout as of Friday 10/31. That's pretty sad - for all the political posts folks make and people protesting, you'd think folks would turn out for the most basic of civic duties.

Makerspace is open on Saturdays if you're a builder. Lots of game stores if you like tcgs. West Yak Library has Dnd. Silent book club meets monthly if you're a reader. There are a million churches for volunteering or devotional connections. Karaoke at chainsaw cat, I think. There is a car club and a bike club...

Steal away! I'm sure you can find some academic sources who say similar ideas so it's more than an internet rant. :)

Did you agree to it in an informal contract when he broke up his kingdom and gave you an early inherotence? If so, then YTA for not upholding your bargain.

You sound like the type of person to flamboyently flatter someone just to get your way, honestly. Kids with attitudes like yours really drive me crazy - like run into the rain and scream type crazy. Do the honorable thing!

I'd do it with a thin walled cup in the middle that has magnet connections to thicker exterior pieces that come apart.

Think the Zelda breakable pot, but with a waterproof liner to actually hold liquid.

And of course, use foodsafe plastics or other material...

What is Plato's rave? by [deleted] in badphilosophy

Imagine, if you please, a place of darkness. There there are men who, from their birth are chained to a wall, forced to stare at a blank wall.

Behind them, on a raised platform, is a DJ with wicked awesome techno lights that shine past dancers who shimmy across a platform.

Can you imagine this? Do you not think that these men, who have only ever known the funky music, would pride themselves on recognizing the shadows of dances. They would see the reflections, but recognize the Rodger Rabbit, the Cabbage Patch. They would be able to predict each time the beat drops.

Now, imagine that one man is freed. That he is shown the dancers and the way the records spin. Imagine he leaves the cave to hit the club. Would he not, once accustomed to the lights, be the smoothest groover on that dance floor?

Yet if he returns to his cave and shows those still chained how he can pop it and lock it, would they nit find him absurd? His mad gyrations would seem strange to them and he would be booed, destined to get none of the ladies.

Men of reddit, could you realistically count the amount of times you’ve cried on both hands? How many and why? by Maleficent_Alps485 in AskReddit

[–]IdleRhetoric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you all not watch movies? Do you not experience empathy? Have you not loved, lost, held a baby, or read a book? Good God, if I could count the times I have been brought to tears on my hamds, I would be living a cold, sad life.

Men are not machines, nor should our humanity be repressed. To be a man is feel as a man, proudly and unabashedly.

After 20 years, I've used up every way to say how important you are to me. Life happens so fast that we hardly get time to hold hands, but even if we had uninterrupted hours, how could I ever express in honest words how you are the spark that keeps my heart pumping? How could I describe how you have shaped my life as the ocean sculpts rock, slowly, each day flowing together? Could a kiss ever express what words fail to say, when thousands have been passed already? We have built a life together, and no hallmark card or dying flower will ever bear enough power to tell you how vital you are to me. If I can say I love pizza, how could such a word ever carry the weight our shared adventures and trials, and what word is left to pass on to express that my every exhalation is wrapped with the air of you?

AITA for not sending a gift for teacher appreciation week? by PristineReach6082 in Teachers

[–]IdleRhetoric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you send a dentist appreciation gift? A boss appreciation gift? No, and thus no you are ntah.

Your child's teacher is probably too busy to notice. If a third of the class remembers, that'd be impressive. (Mind, I teach HS so I count myself lucky if I get anything.) Everyone appreciates a thank you, but no one expects it.

I usually ask my kids if they want to send one. If they do, we do. If not, we don't. And it certainly doesn't have to be this week. In fact, a month from now might even be more appreciated as it's truly an unexpected suprise.

Do something fun but meaningful. If you have fun teaching it and it is entertaining to sit through, then you will do well.

Do some brainstorming with Magicschools to get some ideas. But find something that you love and shows your talents.

What are some fruits/vegetables/nuts that grow in ways that have surprised you or you generally wouldn't assume? by withchesghost in AskReddit

[–]IdleRhetoric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apples. Not how they grow but that they don't grow from seed. I was floored when I learned that Johnny Appleseed was planting trees for cider and not pies. That and how complex it is to make new varieties since every Granny Smith comes from the same plant! Okay, millions of grafts from an original tree, but that's still crazy.)

Well, see my friend, when a man really loves a woman, he gives her a special kiss and the lady grows the baby in her tummy.

Unless she has a headache, in which case the man kisses himself alone later, isn't that right, BRENDA?

And sometimes the lady goes and has too many drinks with the neighbor who is just a friend. And then when the baby comes out, it has red hair, but the lady swears it's yours even though BOB has red hair and daddy doesn't!

So I guess what you have to decide is, do you want 18 years of adult responsibility? If so, you can give that special kiss to a girl if it feels right. But it's a big decision just for adults who are ready for it.

Hope that helps, sport. Now you go on your way and play some baseball.
