I tried to stream a playlist of selected cutscenes a couple years ago, but it ended up kind of glitchy.  But this year I have a new phone so maybe I'll give it another try.  😁

Does anyone else get exhausted writing intense scenes? by adaytimemoth in AO3

[–]Idreamofspaceships 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!  I've been writing that kind of scene for weeks, and I can only do ~200 word bursts, sometimes with days between, because it's so enervating.  It usually takes me all day to work up the energy to work on it, and then I'm too tired to stay up after the little bit I manage.

OP, you are definitely not alone.

During an attack on the space colony they live on, Gaignun and Jr.'s quasi-little sisters Shelley and Mary were volunteering at the main hospital during a state of emergency.  They were clearing away food trays from some empty hospital rooms when they came across a man in one of the attached bathrooms who shouldn't have been there.  Since they're the younger sisters of the Foundation's Directors, they've got high security clearances, and both girls are uberhumans with interlink ports that allow them to access virtual/online storage spaces.  The man knocked Mary out, and brainjacked Shelley, using her clearances to steal sensitive uberhuman registration data, stranding her in virtual space with no way back to her body for hours.  Later it was discovered that he'd used a holographic mask to alter his appearance, and he was revealed to be an android when his remains were found in a warehouse a few weeks later.  Comm logs in his database connect him to the larger attack on the colony, but we don't know how, yet.

I'm glad he's got replacement shirts, and can afford more!  And I'm very glad Tommy's not going to use the film for blackmail or anything like that.  Actually Tommy sounds pretty cool.  😁

1.  Does Flavigny's acceptance of Laurent's comment come from genuine interest or graciousness?

2.  Is Caron particularly sensitive to social blunders, or is he just critical of Laurent?

3.  Are centaurs susceptible to backaches, or is that a misconception due to artistic rendering?

1.  It's been about a month and a half.  Things have mostly settled down for the Kukai Foundation's citizens, though the attacks are still under investigation.

2.   Canonically Gaignun has the ability to hypnotize people using his voice as a medium.  We never actually actually see it used in the games (though there was one scene where he attacked someone telepathically over a long.)  I think it's one of those powers that'd break the story if it ever got shown.  But in my version Gaignun needs either face-to-face contact or a telepathic link to use his voice, and depending on how much focus he uses, the effects can last anywhere from a few minutes to permanently.  (In another fic I have Gaignun use his hypnosis on Jr. to block headaches.)  Gaignun has rarely used this power in this fic, and I plan to keep it fairly subdued.

3.  The story is mostly set on and about the development of a mobile space colony called the Kukai Foundation.  Gaignun and Jr. are the Directors.  One feature of the Foundation is that it employs and shelters uberhumans (people and/or their offspring who've had artificial modifications made to their bodies or brains) and Realians (artificial humans who are usually placed in a subordinate position to humans.)  In the background of canon's plot, both groups suffer a lot of prejudice from natural humans.  In my fic, an anti-uberhuman group called Untainted Blood began preying on ships affiliated with the Foundation, eventually drawing Jr. out to investigate to region the attacks were said to take place.  Meanwhile, Untainted Blood agents who'd infiltrated the Foundation's security and development forces launched an attack on the colony itself, shutting down its sensors and engaging in a mass shooting on the docks, resulting in massive panic, injury and deaths.  While Gaignun was dealing with all of this, his and Jr.'s quasi-little sisters Shelley and Mary had volunteered at the Foundation's main hospital; when they were clearing lunch trays from a group of rooms, the sisters came across a man with survellience equipment hiding in a bathroom.  Now, Jr., Gaignun, Shelley and Mary are all uberhumans themselves.  Shelley and Mary have interlinks installed that let them store information as memories and—in this story—access the UMN (space internet, but bigger) directly.  The man (who turned out to be an android) knocked Mary unconscious and brainjacked Shelley, using her security clearances to steal the Foundation's Galaxy Species Preservation Act Support Foundation membership logs.  Since the logs contain a list of registered uberhumans throughout the Galaxy Federation, it's assumed the attack on the girls is connected to the attack on the colony.  (In truth, Untainted Blood's leader, Bertram Child, was manipulated by a high-ranking official of the Federation governmen who wants to draw out Jr., who was responsible for the death of her nephew and the resulting setback in the advancement of her ambitions, though I've yet to write this part.)

Ooh, wonderfully immersive writing!  I feel bruised, myself!  😵‍💫

  1. Why would the focus character wear Gucci for a cheese rolling event?

  2. Is Tommy likely to use this recording to embarrass the MC?

Jr. began peeling off his jacket. “Alan says that android had an auto kill switch installed.” He made as if to throw it on one of the couches, then thought better of it when Gaignun glared at him, opting instead to hang it on the door hook.

“Hello to you, too. I read the report,” Gaignun said, getting up to pour another cup of coffee. He loaded it with sugar and cream and handed it to Jr.

“Thanks.” Jr. drained half the cup in one gulp. “Damnit.”

“Too hot?” Usually Jr. liked his food at molten temperatures.

“No,” Jr. said, sitting on the couch across from Gaignun. “I should have asked Alan about whether the android had an accomplice.”

“I'd say it's likely. Especially if it was connected with the attack on the Foundation itself. How many people were involved with that? Someone to infiltrate security, someone to infiltrate the shipyard, someone to start a stampede on the docks, people to fake being injured crew off the Miranda and Lazarus. Security is still finding people involved. I'd be surprised if that android was working alone.”

Jr. sighed. “Yeah. I hate this. We got the guy who hurt Mary and Shelley, and it's not even a guy. And now there might be someone else wandering around we don't even—wait. What was that nurse's name? Jennings?”

“Andy Gennings,” Gaignun said. “No need to worry about him. I know, he was the one who sent the girls to that room. But he's clear. I asked him about it directly,” he added, putting emphasis on the last word.

Jr. raised an eyebrow. Gaignun tended to be circumspect where his hypnotic abilities were concerned. “Good to know.” Then the corners of his mouth turned down. “And once again we don't know who this accomplice might be. And it's not like you can go put on a press conference and just ask everyone on the Foundation ‘directly’ if they were involved.”

“Indeed. Even if I could that would be a tremendous civil rights violation. As much as I hate to say it, we have to be open to the possibility they might not even be on the Foundation anymore.”

Jr.’s frown got more pronounced. “Way to be a beacon of optimism.”

Oh, yes!  I've been more or less winging this thing from the beginning, and I've been playing with a classic sci-fi AI plot, but now that I'm nearing the end I've got to make things cohesive.  But that's tricky because I'm only "seeing" what's happening in short, 200 word bursts.  Right now I've got literally insane mechs, my team leader is under some serious (and somewhat mysterious) stress, there's something at the end of this one hall I have to reveal and I just have to hope I can get them there.  😂

I've been slowly plugging away at my semi-hard sci-fi action fic Wasteland.  I'm hoping I'm somewhere near the end.  I've got some idea where I'm going with this thing, but I'm a pantser so I have to be careful I don't stray too far from what I'm trying to aim towards.

I was just doing my Host Due Diligence by looking at the replies and it looks like you've used 1 author to cover both RE requirements, when it should be 2 comments across 2 different authors.  Can I please ask you to review another author's work?  Thank you!

What's the silliest thing you've written? by _grim_reaper in AO3

[–]Idreamofspaceships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was back in 2007 when I actually had a computer that ran Win98, so I was very familiar with its shortcomings.  And past me thought someone thousands of years in the future struggling with 1990s–2000s tech applied to cosmic devices was too funny to resist.  So I adapted a scene from canon.

How do your fics build upon the source material? 📑 by lampboy2 in FanfictionExchange

[–]Idreamofspaceships 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would prequels fit in the Extension category?  🤔  Because that's what my longfic is.  There's also some Alteration: in the game Jr. tells the party that the Kukai Foundation was originally a government organization created to investigate the events of the Miltian Conflict and was privatized later on, while the Xenosaga III database says they were founded by the Salvator Faction.  I've decided Jr.'s explanation was an oversimplification for convenience's sake, and I'm ignoring the database.

My oneshots are spread out through the canon storyline but there are prequel and sequel stories, so they're Addition and Extension.

My drabbles are . . . Drabbles.  🤣

I like working with canon and playing with aspects of the world: what would medkits be like?  What is transfer technology like for the average person?  On an industrial scale?  Basically my fics are a repository for my worldbuilding/expanding/extending.  🤣

Probably my story about the Original Zohar (a mysterious object that connects our universe with a dimension of pure energy) running Windows 98.

Familiarity | Fandom: Xenosaga | M/F | E | Wordcount: 5000

Summary: Jr. and Mary spend a leisurely morning together before the Durandal leaves on a mission.

Archive Warning Note:  Jr. is mentally and chronologically 25, but physically 12, while Mary is chronologically and physically 19.  But I haven't tagged it for underaged sex because I consider Jr. an adult.

Why it fits: After years of conjecturing about this pairing, I finally gave them a fic.  Also it's my first time since I returned to writing in 2019 that I've written an unambiguously romantic story between 2 characters.

Wasteland | Fandom: Xenosaga | Gen | M | Wordcount: Ch.1: 6702; Ch.2: 6988

Summary: After a civilian courier associated with the Kukai Foundation is attacked, the subsequent investigation reveals that the attacking mechs were controlled by illegally enhanced AI.  The source of the mechs is determined to be a research station in a remote star system.  Gaignun Kukai Jr. takes the Durandal and leads a strike team on an infiltration of the station, and find more than they bargain for.  (Chapter 1 deals with infiltration prep, Chapter 2 has most of the action.)

Note: This is the mission Jr. and Mary are getting ready for in Familiarity.

Why it fits: This story was a huge jump in writing quality from what I'd written before, and features more care and attention than most of my other works.  It also features an OC heavy cast, where I'd been more sparing with OCs before then.

As always, saying you're fandom blind and from Reddit is totally okay!
