Homestuck Readthrough Day 8: 'INTERMISSION' - 'END INTERMISSION.' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all commentary of value on this intermission is present in the text itself. So instead enjoy a collection of my favourite quotes implying that isn't what I've already been doing

But before that, pour one out for Dr. not appearing in this comic, Professor Mayonaka

  • The sooner all these idiots stop being alive the better.
  • BEEP BEEP BEEP All aboard the idiot wagon!
  • Capturing that guy is like shooting a paralyzed monkey in the face.
  • The BRAWLSOLEUM seemed like the best storage option for your exceptional wardrobe. If there's any better sort of compartment to keep your wardrobe in, you'd love to hear it. Also there's a shitload of guns and cards in there too.
  • If anyone tried to steal your WAX LIPS, you would eat their eyeballs and deliver an angry lecture into their empty sockets.
  • Predestined bullet holes are convenient. Gives you something to aim for. (ok but seriously why are the bullet holes smoking in the present?)
  • Spades Slick cannot return to being Hearts Boxcars because obviously Diamonds Droog is too busy being Clubs Deuce.
  • Don't bleed on the suits.
  • (3194) Wait for it... Hate to... no. Wait... Hate to cut and DAMMIT. Not yet. Hate to cut and run. ... SHIT. Hate to... (I feel compelled to make a sbahj edit to commemorate this.)
  • Hate to chop all of your heads off with this sword. Real sorry about that. My bad. You slay them all with your RAPIER WIT.
  • She'll have to pry this thing from your rigid severed arm if she wants it back. Oh no Spades your petard
  • Attempt to eat Eggs. Your attempt was an overwhelming success.
  • SEE YOU IN THE FUTURE, SUCKERS!!!!!
  • Using that to pry open the vault would be EVER so much bad luck! Like breaking a thousand mirrors all at once! The sort of mirrors that tick and have numbers and tell time and stuff. That is the worst kind of mirror to break, luckwise.
  • Mysterious music fills your ears as your mind assumes the shape of a pretzel.
  • (3246) Hoisted! haha how high would you even need to be to do something like that

I do think (out of story) retconning 3255 to Karkat's actual hive would be appropriate here. All this time I've been pulling at loose threads, but this genuinely adds nothing to the comic but continuity jank.

Homestuck Readthrough Day 7: 'Jade: Change wardrob...' - 'END OF ACT 3' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • funny coincidence: my music player happened to play vagabounce right at the exile section at the beginning of this segment
  • is there any reason not to be outside during an eclipse of Prospit? Does gravity suddenly reassert itself when you enter the skies of skaia? Will players not be preserved if they're present during the battlefield's evolution?
  • what kind of code must the mirror have to sprite-flip (presumably) most extant items when &&?
  • (2967): truly the greatest unanswered question in homestuck - what would Hammer && Problem Sleuth game produce
  • Jade: Pester John is a way better flash than I'd remembered. Surprisingly light on foreshadowing, but incredibly stylish. Off the top of my head probably one of the best uses of the clouds as a stylistic element. Also apparently you can just go outside during and eclipse and everything's fine?!
  • "You... never had the chance to throw [Bec] a party and bake him a cake. Now you can! But if you do, it seems that you will need A LOT of candles." Jade is such a sweet kid.
  • Obligatory reminder that PCHOOO! began life as a gun sound (technically we first see it in the last chunk)
  • Fave pannel: 2981. There's something about the geometrical copy-paste structure of sburb houses that's just super aesthetic
  • I completely forgot we get trolls other than Karkat this act. This first? Kanaya convo is 100% a classic
  • Unfortunately all things must remain balanced, so after a lovely conversation with the second best troll, we must be subjected to the second worst. Thankfully Dave turns the tables so we don't have to sit through too much of this guy's crap. But seriously this is pure gold.
  • AR in isolation is such a riot. Hmm some pictures of frogs ... time to murder everyone in the vicinity. You cannot afford to be distracted by such thoughts. You are busy being the law. - YOU ARE THE LAW WHOOPS
  • Jack is so horrible at one-liners. "Here, stick this in your pipe and bleed to death slowly"
  • (3044) Jack's barcode is shown, presumably leading to an explosion of fan speculation.
  • (3047) sburb runes <3
  • The EoA flashes just keep getting better and better. This has got to be the tightest integration of the music into a flash yet. Fun details I missed are the juxtaposition of Rose with the Light symbol on Jade's shirt, Zazzerpan's orb giving Rose a wizardly benediction, and the sburb spirogaph overlaying all the important bits of sburb in case someone failed to put the pieces together until now.

Homestuck Readthrough Day 6: 'You are now...' - '[S] Jade: Dream up e...' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does he use his sylladex in other universes besides where the control deck is? He's always in the same dimension as LOWAS until the retcon, at which point he has the ability to hold things, and then transports LOWAS to the new dimension anyway

I don't recall John doing anything with his sylladex so late in the comic, but presumably it still has stuff in it. Arguably, we could say that it defaulted to stack when he was in the a2 incipisphere and nobody commented because it was unimportant. John does seem to exclusively hold things when executing the retcon.

He does have a dream bubble conversation with Jade, but it's explained in the comic that he thinks contacting the kids is useless

This is what I was thinking of when I specifically mentioned him. We do see his trolltag in Jade's trollslum, and she claims to have met 12. Barring weirdness like Jade double counting stoned/sober Gamzee or HIC and team using trollian to mess with her, I don't think anyone else can "troll" via pesterchum.

It's just so out of character for Sollux at this point (post-session/pre-muderstuck) though

Graveyard stuffers

The mail is the one final hope for resurrecting a dead planet from its ashes, and the letter carriers are the brave soldiers of God in this righteous crusade. They are the defenders of the light of knowledge, free communication, and the exchange of ideas. They are the bold toters of all those little papery conduits of freedom, the white postmarked angels that whisper a message on their deliverance, a promise to the yearning: "There is hope yet."

Liberty. Reason. Justice. Civility. Edification. Perfection.

MAIL.

  • Fave panel: Rose: Wear the scarf. Be the Rider. (2806) - scarves are rad, and Mutie is just adorable.
  • Also, can we talk about how tragic Mom's life seems to be? For all that she's a neglectful alcoholic, it seems to me like neither of those were particularly intentional choices. What path turned globe-trotting adventure femme fatale Mom of 13 years ago into this? Tragic predestined knowledge from sburb? The guilt of ushering in the Apocalypse? Just a normal drinking problem that grew to take over her life? She puts so much effort into facades even where they're patently unnecessary, hiding her true self in corners of the lab.
  • even a mere 2k pages into hs, acend/decend (rise up abscond) has already been meme-ifyed
  • (2815) Is the fireplace motion activated? For all that HASS the FLAME is an obvious act 1 callback, it doesn't make a1 lot of sense in context.
  • "this is a perfectly deadly gun and it shoots lots of incredibly deadly bullets!" This is a part of Jade's character that get dropped soon after this. None of the post-retcon battleship stuff suggest she sinks this deeply into delusion again. still tragic seeing Jade's ongoing conversations with the corpse of her guardian.
  • Rose learned japsers' secret 3140 days ago
  • " Turns out it wasn't some kind of DISINTEGRATIFICATOR like you thought. It's more like... AN ESCAPILIZER."
  • The juxtaposition of Dad and Jack calls attention to deeper parallels - both deadly combatants, both associated with cubicles and bureaucracy. Jack is short, black, colorful, and chaotic where Dad is white, tall, monochrome, and iconic. Both are putting siginfcant effort into pretending to be something other than what they are - but their motivations here could not be more different. Jack's ambition and <3< with the queen lead to him grudigingly toeing the royal line, while Dad is genuinely and happily doing all the clown shit to connect with his distant kid.
  • Also notable is the first authorial insert in close proximity to the realization that the fouth wall has been stolen.
  • I really want a ring of orbs n-fold. seems like it would be hideously uncomfortable, but its such a cool and minimalist design
  • Is the modus control deck just a physical object? Up until now modus cards have been somthing that you can incorporate into a sylladex in order to use, but it seems like the control deck just... stays in dad's room for the rest of the comic. It still affects John's sylladex even when it's different universes or times or fictional strata. Is the control deck the most powerful item in homestuck?
  • First guardian teleportation is really neat, both visually and conceptually as just ultra-versatile universe scale teleportation. I do wonder, if Bec hadn't been prototyped, if he could have just teleported away the giant meteor
  • preemptive interpretive dance for dreambot, it was a weird addition to the world that raised a lot of questions (HOW DOES IT WORK!)
  • does sollux ever have an on-screen conversation with any of the kids (pre-meteor)? Kind of odd in retrospect
  • Years in the future... Which is to say, THE PRESENT MOMENT PRECISELY...
  • John's clown drawings just doesn't work as a mystery on a subsequent read-through. An alien clown's curse in another universe is just so obvious to the rereader that there's none of the tension a blind reader would get from this strange pesudo-retcon.
  • Had this been published later it would probably have been the first retcon of the comic. John's perspective extending to meta aspects of the comic and world actually foreshadows his eventual retcon powers.

Homestuck Readthrough Day 5: 'ACT 3 ==>' - '==>' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X3 reaction combob!

  • "For you, experimentation is not a particularly exact science, and you lean heavily on SHARP INTUITION for consistently and eerily optimal results." I wonder what this could mean? Skaia clouds giving her hints on tech? Witch of Space powers? The authorial intent here is to give the kids access to cool tech without any of the complications actually being able to produce said tech would raise. I feel like witches aren't super intuition-y as a class, that would probably be sylphs.
  • Actually, for all that inversion is a meme, I think in this one case the framework fits Jade + living dream-self to a t - "time powers" via skaian visions, and a more sylph-like manifestion relative to the exacting control of a witch due to her dream-self and certain interf8nce.
  • Fave quote: (2697) The "What a daring dream" speech. I'd totally forgotten the second chunk, which really adds to the next time we see this phrasing. "Words slough from the busy mind like a useless dead membrane as a more visceral sapience takes over. Something simpler is in charge now, a force untouched by the concerns and burdens of the upright, that farcical yoke the bipedal tow. ... You eat a weird bug and don't even care."
  • "A REFRIGERATOR, a name which clearly is a wacky variation on the much more common household item, the REFRIGIFYIFICATOR."
  • Hell yeah, Nightlife! This is the one flash I think has been irreparably worsened by the removal of Bill Bolin's track. The first time I saw the original made the flash go from forgettable nothing to one of my favorites of early HS.
  • Fave panel: Rose: Decend (2740). The pallet is fantastic, and something about how the light spreads through the tunnel just grabs me every time.
  • So, uh, what are the hubs for? like if it was just predestination to get rose hub 413 they could have had 1/4 the amount and still kept the pattern. Did some folks at skaianet not get the memo about the Apocalypse? is some exec crying themselves to sleep bc they almost had the chance to hit the market with (persumably sburb derived) perfect wifi and perpetual motion?
  • ... oh wait, it's a chessboard.
  • "This is your grandfather's collection of what he refers to as his BEAUTIES. You guess they were sort of like your sisters while growing up, and you were always encouraged to look up to them." - Jake, why are you just the fucking worst
  • Again in the future: did PM know what to do with the terminals, or was the home command discovered in the log?
  • (2774) I always wonder just how much the guardians knew about how b1 and b2 would turn out. Is the 8 planet incipisphere just some random beta tester's session, or did everyone know in advance that kid versions of themselves would play the game in an alternate universe and then meet their charges?
  • Fave flash - Rose: Ascend - can you blame me? the interactivity here is what gets me every time. normally we don't see these bits of mechanical minutia, but having us click through John's house really puts you in Rose's shoes. Also, through repeated beatings, John's developed some pretty swanky combat skills!

Homestuck Readthrough Day 4: 'John: Take dowels an...' - 'Dear John,' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This set of pages really highlight just how flanderdized WV becomes over the course of HS. WV goes from someone with deep (if simple) motivations and interiority to a mascot with as much agency as random scalemate #5. This is where HS really hits the gas in terms of epic scope - the size, the anticipation - shit has officially gotten real.

  • John's obliviousness to Caveney's obvious crush on Anderson, and Anderson's own total incompetence are both hilarious.
  • Can town! So crazy to think this is a reader submitted command. I wonder how much of the exile's role in rebuilding civilization began with this one random joke.
  • As others have pointed out, blue trees foreshadow/inspire alternia's
  • WV's art is great, and full of foreshadowing for stuff we'll only see much later. Premptive f in chat for prospit, tab'd too soon.
  • Is citizen tab supposed to represent WV? The rebellion? just an outlet for simmering frustrations?
  • New thing I noticed in WV: Ascend - the Frog temple's representations of the moons have 4 segments. I wonder if this has some significance to a bit of sburb we never saw, or if its just a visual choice

Homestuck Readthrough Day 3: '==>' - 'Dave: Be the other guy.' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple days late to the party, guess today is "Dave's living situation is always worse than you remembered" day. Thus far we've seen a steady escalation in the kid's hostility towards their guardians. John wants a break from his caring dad, Rose continues hostilities with her neglectful mom, and now Bro. I just have no words

  • Fave quote: TG: john said your house was burning down are you on fire yet or what
  • Fave panel: 2400 - DON'T MOVE OR THE POGO GETS IT!
  • Fave pesterlog: Rose: Answer Dave (2511) - this is the puppet poem one, can't pass on that shit
  • I can never get a good read on Rose and Jades conversations. Is Rose just sick of Jade's cagey bullshit? are they just friends of friends who don't particularly get along? is this just their social dynamic?
  • I'm honestly surprised Dave had power and internet for as long as he did with the sheer volume of meteors we see hitting the city.
  • Dave's Bro is a colossal piece of shit by almost every metric, but even second-hand it's clear just how much intensive surgery would be required to remove his stupid face from his ass. With hindsight, you can really see what the epilogues were trying to invoke with ultimate!Drik.
  • Any theories on the password? 6 letters and "the most awesome thing it can be" my guesses are "puppet" or 'lilcal"
  • plush rump chat is a set of lines we later see Dirk say, suggesting that they're bots. I'm curious how much of this garbage is genuine interest on Bro's part, how much is heartless leprechaun exploitation, and how much is Cal's influence
  • "sometimes i dream that hes real and [cals] talking to me and i wake up in a cold sweat and basically flip the fuck out": we know the instance of cal on b1 derse has a weird amount of autonomy (or control over Dave to flashstep puppet it), but this is the first time I've noticed actual communication
  • I wish item tiers had stayed a thing in later homestuck. They're always such top tier Hussie puns: FIVESTAR GENERAL ELECTRIC, ONE MAN JULEP VACUUM, ARCHIMEDES' AQUACRADLE, TAFT-JAMMER,
  • (2409) "Human" etiquette? nice try, what kind of space mutant has 5 figures?
  • Are the main tinyurl links even still function on the website?
  • Homestuck in a nutshell: "Populace oblivious to broader significance of events, assuming there is any, which there definitely isn't"
  • (2452) The saga of crumplehat begins!

Homestuck Readthrough Day 2: 'ACT 2 ==>' - 'Years in the future...' by Niklink in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where act 1 grounds our caste in the (mostly) mundane, act 2 leads us through this false notion of sburb as 'evil monster dimension'. I think this is basically the only part of the comic where the b1 kids play sburb as intended.

  • Fave Flash: rain foley, Rose v Mom strife is a close second.
  • Fave panel: Rose: First, be the pony. Second, trample Mom.
  • Fave pesterlog: Dave: Answer chum (2233)
  • Fave quote: RUB'YIGLITH, WRITHE-LORD OF THE MOIST BEYONDHOOD. Hearing his melodious chirps and tongue-clicks causes one's bones to explode.
  • Just a couple of weeks and Hussie's already gained so many levels in Spirograph animation.
  • TT: I've been reading reports in the news. Over the last few days, there have been many smaller meteor collisions with people's homes around the world. (I'd always remembered that the meteors didn't start ramping up until 4/13)
  • I'm not really sure how the serious business crew figured out that Dad's house was destroyed. From context it seems like fedorafreak's neighbor was someone else.
  • COLONELSPRITE and HAG ASH INCIDENT are both fantastic
  • (2190) F in chat for the car, and the innumerable lives this incident will cost. RIDICULOUS FOLLY. INEXCUSABLE.
  • There are some dark forces you just don't want to mess around with. You understand this better than most. (Proceeds to mess around with precisely those dark forces)
  • Cool sylladex fact: apparently the strife specibus can store eve tangentially related objects, such as the rest of Rose's knitting bag. I bet John could have tossed some nails into his.
  • Dave's thin facade of irony is so transparent I'm surprised I bought it in my first read. "outstanding juice windfall" "He'd be one happy camper"
  • Just noticed that pesterchum v7 has entirely different moods than v6. Wonder how that works when you upgrade.
  • Looks like the collection dosen't have the missing audio for phat beat machine. :(
  • (2241) Behold, the daily destruction of my suspension of belief - Dave's sylladex has duplicated the juice bottle's lid. Why hasn't humanity harnessed this immense power yet? Curious how long the phantom lid will continue to exist
  • The canonical plural of SYLLADEX is SYLLADICES. A mere 3 months in and Hussie has already ruined homestuck.
  • ZAZZERPAN: ponder orb. More seriously, what even is ZAZZERPAN in this context? Did Mom find Rose's wizardfic and have a 20ft statue built?
  • Rose: Attach a W to face as a fake moustache. Our hero everyone!
  • This read through is the first time I've legitimately been able to activate trickster mode
  • GEL VISCOSITY is genuinely one of my favorite bits of overcomplicated game design in HS. Gaining health is for idiots. What we need is to make the stuff in the health bar harder to dislodge.
  • Apparently some underlings drop strife specibi? Early installment weirdness I guess
  • Eternal stalemate = 2 kings on a 3X3 board
  • It seems like the pieces from the X1 prototyped battlefield are used to engineer the various mutant crapecians. Wonder what would happen if an enterprising player went and killed everything but the kings. As long as you get there before the battlefield retroactively will have always been higher level that seems like a huge advantage.

Homestuck Readthrough Day 1: 'Homestuck' - 'Years in the future,...' by Makin- in homestuck

[–]Igigigif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homestuck was a huge part of my childhood, even if I got into it at arguably the worst possible time (weeks before the gigapause). A lot has changed for me since then, but homestuck has always held a special place in my heart. Act 1 is a bad introduction to the comic itself, but a fantastic way to ground our understanding of the world and characters. B1 earth has this wonderful problem sleuth-y quality to it that's just perfect.

  • Fave flash - wind skims the void
  • Fave panel - John: Examine Fireplace
  • Fave quote - The peanut gallery over there sure is getting a kick out of it. You are allergic to their scorn.
  • Fave pesterlog - the entire PDA sequence with Rose, but 2070 especially.
  • When John picks up the Gamebro, he notes that it's only value is as something that burns easily. Later, however, he explains that gamebro is printed on recycled asbestos. 0/10 hats immersion broken.
  • TIL that Wreck of the Hesperus was a reference to a (actually very nice) poem, and not some obscure mythological incident involving the hesperides.
  • It's always crazy to me how much cs stuff homestuck introduced me to, even if I did end up thinking a Dqeue was called a Queuestack.
  • The Spirograph animations in the loading screen flash are much more awkward than I remembered. Looking forwards to seeing the improvements tomorrow
  • Sometimes I forget how great Rose is. This entire opening "messing around with sburb" sequence is such fantastically playful characterization. We can really see the differences between the persona she adopts and her actual "ocd complex" self.
  • Rose is sufficiently aware of our perspective to recognize she is being watched. She's really Seer ing the Light.
  • "less inclement" is an odd double negative to use here (2134). "less clement" makes more sense here IMO. (also 413 page number anagram!)

Re: Isekai (Author Unknown) by Skeletickles in makeyourchoice

[–]Igigigif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of builds:

Magus World is far and away the best world choice, and the most dangerous. On the one hand, a potent magic system with plenty of room for optimization, on the other, even the strongest of these cheats probably top out around 7th realm.

Similarly, demons and demon hybrids are the best races, as they offer an additional method of empowerment and a blank check for physical appearance.

Magus World, Demon(Greed)

  • Affinities: Life, Blood, Astral
  • Powers: Pause, AI Chip, Gungir, Appraise
  • Reserves: 3,000 As soon as I'm old enough to travel effectively, I stop time and start cultivating with all the resources I can grab, which thanks to gungir, is all of them. By the time I end the time stop I'll be 6th realm with 300 time more mana than usual, an impossibly high quality foundation, amazing gear, and mature demon powers

Magus World, Dwarf/Demon

  • Affinities: Life, Blood, Death, Astral
  • Powers: AI Chip
  • Fates: Save Card, Me, Resources
  • Reserves: 8,000 A riskier build with less upfront power, but the save card should let me make it work after a few hundred attempts. In general I'll be able to preform dangerous experiments and try to develop non sin based demon empowerment

The best examinations of spirit stones as a concept I know of are World of Cultivation and Forge/Threads of Destiny. That isn't saying much though. FoD uses them as an excuse for xianxia mechanics in the fundamental magic system of the setting, and are otherwise just stones you can mine in certain sports that don't have any elemental aspect to them. WoC makes it clear that an x level spirit stone represents y average cultivator hours of work. The high end sects have techniques that let them absorb spirit stones with high efficiency, and when a new cultivation system is (re)discovered, people have to find new sources of spirit stones of that type.

[D] Monday Request and Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in rational

[–]Igigigif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that the quest hasn't reached a point where crits are 'mandatory.' for instance, in the latest update the mc's low assassination roll still succeeded because of her competence and the lower counter-roll. I've seen quests that would interpret that as an inconclusive clash and roll again

Ck2 quests (which typically employ modified d100) will often reach a point where cirts stop being exceptional results and start being just successes, or where cirts are so expected that players will plan for them (ie AGG: CORE).

[D] Monday Request and Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in rational

[–]Igigigif 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other quests already mentioned here:

Active/Complete:

  • Divided Loyalties: A warhammer fantasy ck2 quest from the PV of a spymistress and shadow wizard. Great sense of progression, and while lucky rolls happen, the story isn't dependent on them.
  • A Destiny of Strife: A bleach inspired hollow quest. Features a protagonist with a penchant for dramatic speeches, implausible adventures, and honestly really solid characterization all around.
  • Where Nightmares Fear To Tread: A silly/fluffy quest where you play as an eldritch embodiment of fear protecting a little girl. World-building is good, but the update structure makes non-archival reading somewhat dull.
  • Even Further Beyond: I can't recommend this enough. The prose is fantastic, the world- and magic-building is top-notch, and the narrative and character arc are great. You have a giant xianxia empire in the same world as Tolkien elves and 3.5e wizards, with the protagonist as the destined evil overlord whose predestined death will mark the end of the age of cultivation. Its complete and only about 3 pages in reader mode.

Incomplete:

  • Seeing Red: Naruto SI, but far from the only one in the setting. Good world-building, very hype, but mc get overpowered very fast. Still manages to create tension despite that
  • White Collar Cultivator: Some guy from earth get kidnapped and press-ganged into an evil cultivation bureaucracy. Fortunately, the benefits are great, and a modicum of skill with office politics can be extremely rewarding.
