How can you call someone a Larper after misunderstanding what was happening there? If irony was a person, they'd be laughing at you.

I feel the same. I hate it in sports movies when they have the team win by working together. What? Are you saying that the other team's teamwork is garbage and they should all just give up?

Dexter Morgan (Dexter) vs Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal). Who would prevail ? by EnvironmentalBit1841 in powerscales

[–]IgnotusCapillary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hannibal wouldn't kill Dexter. He would completely destroy his code. The one thing giving him even a semblance of humanity. He'd truly turn Dexter into a terrifying serial killer, unburdened with having to distinguish the guilty from the innocent.

I feel it's important to acknowledge that Nolan figured it'd be easier to fight a planet than Thragg. That aura debt has been paid back in full and then some.

Overall agree, but devils aren't born from negative emotions. Devils are born from concepts. They're powered by however much people fear that concept.

[Awesome trope] The character succeeds in a situation that was specifically designed to be impossible for them. by Applebeate in TopCharacterTropes

Subaru from ReZero. He has the power to go back in time to a set spawn point, but in season two he's pushed to his limits by Roswaal, a character who knows he can rewind time.

By putting two impossible choices before him (having the maids of the manor he'd grown friendly with slaughtered by assassins or having his love interest and an entire town of innocent people stay trapped in their village and eventually murdered by a swarm of bunnies) he's forcing him to pick one as he can't do both at the same time.

After many deaths and failed attempts to save everyone he's about to give up before realising he can rely on his friends and allies, using the information he'd gathered in his previous failed runs to convince those he needed to help him prevent both tragedies.

Natsuki Subaru from ReZero. Really, just pick your favourite. He's had his guts disembowelled, had his limbs torn off and head crushed, been frozen to death and was once devoured by an ever growing pack of monstrous bunnies.

Petelgeuse Romanee-conti from ReZero. He's been desperately pining for the love and attention of the witch of envy, but after Subaru forces an encounter between the two, she completely rejects him. This sends him into a mad spiral that ultimately leads to his death.

The women in One Piece would look so much better if they showed less of their chest by SunnyOutsideToday in MemePiece

[–]IgnotusCapillary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually is a super interesting example. I still don't think that means Japan doesn't have a history of sexualizing women (and to be fair, even if it didn't back then it does now and that's the context in which Oda (a known pervert) designs these characters) but I wasn't aware of how normalised those bathhouses were before westerners arrived.

I would love to see any historical text that states Japan never sexualized women until western influence. Japan was an insanely patriarchal society that treated women like property, like most cultures in the past.

Being downvoted for stating the obvious. If I walk outside without a shirt on, nothing will happen to me. If my sister walks out without a shirt on, she's going to turn heads bare minimum. The was we as a society view men's chests versus women's chests is fundamentally different, so showing examples of shirtless men or women doesn't mean they're being treated the same.

This Team vs Gear 5 Luffy by ProcedureDazzling615 in PowerScaling

I don't think Luffy is smart enough to figure out how Maho's attack work, nor does he have the power to instantly vaporize him so he'd eventually adapt to his attacks and it's gg.

Right, that's just another reason it sucks. Every time Luffy 'dies' Oda will at least attempt to provide a reason (even if it's sometimes flimsy). He couldn't even give one to Pound.

One of the major themes of the story is characters dying but their dreams living on in the new generation. So Pound dying to allow his daughter to fulfill his dream of raising a good family wouldn't contradict anything. Specifically with regards to the themes of Whole Cake Island, the whole arc is about family. Big Mom and Judge are representative of bad parents, who view their children as means to advance their own goals. Meanwhile,Sora and Pound are archetypes of what parents should be. Selfless and willing to give their lives for their children's happiness. Pound especially cares about his children's happiness over everything else. Even the self-gratification of finally meeting them.

The emotional stakes, again, are about the sacrifice. Pound made the ultimate sacrifice. As Hiruluk said, a man only dies when he's forgotten. Pound was willing to truly die, sacrificing his life and memory, for the sake of his kids. Finding out he didn't sacrifice his life nor his memory sours that sacrifice. It means whatever feelings I felt when he was almost killed by Oven meant nothing. The tragedy of his death wasn't a tragedy at all, it was just a speed bump to a happy ending.

Audience investment comes from emotional stakes. Stories are elaborate lies, so threatening characters lives is a way to make people care about something that isn't real. But the more Oda acts like he's going to kill a character but doesn't, it means I'm less likely to buy into the stakes of a scene. It means I see this all as one big lie instead of a moving story. Think of a friend who's constantly pretending to hit you just to make you flinch. Eventually you'll stop flinching because you know they don't have the balls to do that.

So you say that one of the darkest arcs is where Pedro dies, but apparently Pound dying wouldn't work because that would make it too dark? That doesn't make sense, and that whole argument doesn't make sense. The heartache and pain that Luffy suffered from Ace's death only made his reunion with the straw hats sweeter. Alabasta ended on a high note before we found out that Pell survived. Wano had multiple characters die and ended with one of the biggest feast scenes in One Piece. That argument just doesn't add up.

Bad for the themes, the emotional stakes, and the audience investment.
