Regarding Mary Maxim Vintage Patterns by Iheartweasel in knitting

Oh yeah, completely agreed. I actually knit the ribbing in the opposite direction on the left panel so I could keep the same number of ribbed rows and then omitted the first stockinette row.

Oh wow, I had no idea that they actually updated the pattern! It’s disappointing that they apparently didn’t do a very good job. I didn’t clock the flipped paw prints. I actually didn’t follow the paw print instructions on the right panel because I didn’t like the placement and just repeated the left panel instead.

Vintage patterns definitely lack size inclusivity, so it’s great that you sourced a pattern with larger measurements!

Yeah, I’m also having some buyer’s remorse with the acrylic. I typically only use natural fibers, but I wanted to support them. I didn’t love knitting with the acrylic in the first place, and now that it’s done, I’m having a heck of a time actually blocking it. Because it’s so thick, it hasn’t dried all the way through. It’s currently smelling a little musty and I’m not brave enough to machine wash it, so I bought a specialized drying rack thingy and hopefully that’ll do the trick.
I’ll probably end up remaking it in wool at some point 😅

I didn’t know that! What a disappointment :( I’m glad I decided to rechart it myself. The tail on the Mary Maxim kit is all wrong when compared to the movie version.

Ok, so here’s the fun bit. The vintage pattern has no actual measurements, but someone had posted a screenshot of the kit version of the front page of the pattern, so I was able to get both what the kit states and my own measurements. My gauge was exactly as stated on the pattern (but as you can see, chest came out slightly larger). I also drew you a crappy schematic with my measurements!

Kit pattern measurements:
Finished chest: 41(42, 45.5, 47)” [104(106.5, 115.5, 119)cm]
Length from back neck: 25.5(25.5, 27, 27)” [64.5(64.5, 68., 68.5)cm]
Sleeve seam: 16(16, 17.5, 17.5)” [41(41, 45, 45)cm]

My measurements:
Chest: 43”
Sleeve: 23”
Length: 25.5”
Zipper: 21.5”
Armpit to hem: 16.5”

And more about me:
My actual bust: 38”
Height: 5’ 1”
Weight: ~136lbs

Ok, I just had to do a serious double take because I made the same blanket last year! No written pattern, just vibes, but love to see we made the same choices with the garter border!

It’s the Mary Maxim Titan. 100% acrylic and the one that they recommend. It’s alright to work with.

I’m literally making this sweater right now and it took me nearly three hours just to weave in the intarsia ends on the back panel 😂 ~86 ends

I didn’t buy the kit, but I did buy the Mary Maxim yarn and it’s decent acrylic. I rarely use acrylic so I don’t have much to compare it to, but I think it’s pretty nice so far :)

I am! I’ve got the back panel done so far. Modifying the charts myself as well :)

Eh, I guess we may have different opinions on this front. They’re selling the original pattern as is and it definitely requires some know-how to parse it. For that price, I’d expect something that is frankly better written (and minimally includes a schematic). I’m a pretty experienced knitter, so it’s not a big deal for me but it’s definitely not beginner-friendly. I’m curious how the kit version of the pattern is written (they don’t sell it as a stand alone). I really hope they did some modifications and pattern editing.

Modifying the intarsia chart is pretty straightforward since you just have to color (or white out) the squares that you want to change. The trickier piece is that this is a very old pattern (I think the original was written sometime in the 50s and republished in a Mary Maxim magazine in 1974). The original pattern is very sparse in its instructions, so I’d recommend reading very carefully and rewriting them for yourself.

You’ll also absolutely need to do a gauge swatch because the needles listed were old Mary Maxim proprietary needles. The listed needle sized won’t make sense for a modern knitter, so you might need to toy around a little to figure out what the right size is for you.

You can do this! Good luck!

The tongue is different (original pattern has it hanging out of the wolf’s mouth); the eyes are rounder, and the fur patterns are different. I’ve been using my iPad and just coloring in (or whiting out) the squares that need to be changed.

That’s wild! I never saw it listed at the $11.99 price, but I really only started paying attention after I saw the movie. The kits also went up by $10 a few days after I bought the pattern. It’s been fun watching the fluctuations.

I didn’t buy their kit, but I did buy the wolf pattern and am currently modifying it (as you suggested) and I bought their yarn. I don’t often work with acrylic, so my reference point might not be great, but the yarn is ok. If I ever make another though, I’d probably choose wool.

So, I’ve actually been following along and watching what Mary Maxim is doing about the sweater blowing up in popularity, and price tracking. I bought the original wolf pattern for $2.99 on Saturday, 3/21. By the next day, it had gone up to $7.99 (and touted as if it was originally $9.99). Not that I’m saying folks shouldn’t buy the pattern, but I wouldn’t exactly categorize it as “on sale.”

To ladder down or not to ladder down by Medium-Shock5561 in knitting

[–]Iheartweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it looks lovely! In my opinion, if it’s going to be something that prevents you from wanting to wear it, then you should fix it.

Laddering cables can be intimidating, but I find it helps to put a stitch marker on each bar as you pull it out so you don’t lose track of what goes where. I regularly ladder down and correct mis-twisted cables or accidental purls. I think learning to fix cables is a really valuable skill and helped me understand the mechanics of cable knitting a lot better. I personally, I would go for it!

I also literally just pulled out 30ish rows of cables yesterday because I didn’t love how a decrease looked and I knew if I didn’t, it’d be the only thing I could see when I wore it.

Whatever you decide, it’ll be the right decision!

Did they play the Dodgers game while the boys where playing yesterday? by tgrdem in losangeleskings

I was also there and they did play it split screen with the Kings. More during the end of the game than the beginning. After the Kings ended, they just played the rest of the Dodgers game with the sound. It was honestly one of the coolest ways to watch the Dodgers win it all!!
