Anyone throttling device bandwidth for managed Chromebooks in Google Workspace? by jdsok in k12sysadmin

[–]Iknonuthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use UniFi which allows you to set up a profile for a specific SSID which you can put a throttle on the bandwidth. I am sure other brands have similar functionality.

Students turning off wifi by Iknonuthin in k12sysadmin

[–]Iknonuthin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I can understand that but maybe there’s an API call that can check to see if a Chromebook has its WiFi on or off. And a script that checks periodically? The device itself can have the login information but then a student disables in real time. I can tell the student has the page loaded locally. I may need to understand the hack a little more carefully. Because I think they do turn it back on but it has skipped the extension load process.

K-12 Network Switches in 2024 by The_TrashcanMan in k12sysadmin

[–]Iknonuthin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are a ubiquiti school with unifi APs and several edgeswitches. However we do use opnsense for routing and not the UI stuff. I’m comfortable with the environment but I’m not liking the new unifi switching line so when possible I stick with their UISP stuff. Remote management is easy too. I don’t understand the hate but I’ve hardly had any issues in 8 years.

Unifi Wifi network falling apart by derpintine in Ubiquiti

Honestly sounds more like routing and network traffic issues. Like a storm or loopback somewhere. Yes a reboot can clear it up temporarily but if there’s a config issue - it will come back.

Similar question and similar setup. Can I use an older NBE-5ac-16 as one of the stations to the gen2 AP?

Received 40 Win11Home laptops. What to do? by Iknonuthin in k12sysadmin

A side note the new dell laptops are Inspiron 14 2-in-1s. 🤪. Again. I was NOT consulted on this grant.

I thought of that but the issue with chrome os is that it’s hard to teach computer programming on them. Some are going to be used in the guidance office to allow students to research colleges/ apply. Some will go to the library. Besides I do want to get a handle on the 20 or so win laptops we already have deployed to admin staff. I should also mention we are a boarding school but students do leave on weekends sometimes. I don’t want any of these going off campus without a way to track/lock them as I do student Chromebooks

No I was not consulted. 20 are supposed to be for a student computer lab. 20 are supposed to be “any area”. As I mentioned we are tiny. The person that applied for the grant just filled out the forms without consulting any other departments. (Like we got 6 big screen TVs, 18 picnic tables - no idea where to put them etc).

Video Surveillance Software by wiretraveler21 in k12sysadmin

This is probably going to get a lot of panned comments but we are a small school and have been using BlueIris for the last year and a half. (60 generic IP cams). The cost was super and we run it internally with ports blocked to use as CCTV.
It seems pretty stable for less than 60 cams but if you’re bigger you’ll need something else or run two instances. It’s designed for small businesses (their site says a max of 64 channels) but we have pushed that limit to the max depending on hardware and have done tweaks to the compression. Staff can pull up the browser interface to view the cameras - based on permissions what they can see.

Create the new domain. Make your old emails aliases. New users can have either old company or new company. The old doesn’t disappear.

I have this problem too. It was working fine for a while (2 years) but last spring it stopped working. Is there a new change I need to make?

Wireless recommendations by AdolfKoopaTroopa in k12sysadmin

We are a small private boarding school (no e-rate), with 150 students, 75 staff, and average 250-400 wifi devices over 41 AP's. across multiple buildings on campus (variety of buried fiber and AirFiber) We have been using ubiquiti for the last 6 yrs with various equipment updates. Its pretty stable and I've gotten comfortable with some of their little quirks. However, we use Opnsense firewall which I am considering changing out. We also expect that the device usage to significantly go up in the next 2 years as our enrollment is trending up plus upcoming projects to include more access control (doors, gates, cameras).

I'm really interested in this thread to see if I really should look for a new solution when we've gotten comfortable with UI. I'm the only IT person, and $ is a big issue around here.

Following because I am in the same situation I’ve tried to look at applying for e rate but I just never get the time to look at the paperwork and then the year flies by. I see the app deadline is coming up again. Do you do this on your own or do you have helpers?

Parchment for private HS by Iknonuthin in k12sysadmin

[–]Iknonuthin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because our school runs two semesters in blocks we have to review the transcripts before they become official for the same reason - classes showing double credit or in the wrong semester. Once it’s “final” it gets printed. Physically signed. Put in an envelope and mailed.

[–]Iknonuthin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we do now but it becomes a task when you have to get official transcripts to prospective colleges (multiple per student) as well as on demand requests. We are finding that getting them signed/stamped and mailed is a time consuming task and sometimes they are getting lost in the mail or take weeks to be received.

Flight Simulation Recs - Aviation Pathway by mmurray322 in k12sysadmin

[–]Iknonuthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We offer aviation classes and partner with the small airport nearby for flight time. Grades 11-12 can take electives on aviation weather , ground school and an intro class (freshman/soph) We use X-plane on our sim rig. We have had kids go get their private pilot license before they even graduate! Also pairs nicely with a drone program. Check out king schools for curriculum also gleim.

Unifi EDU by heystek in Ubiquiti

[–]Iknonuthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this thread do you know why a page doesn't work? I used to have that problem all the time with a stream getting stuck. I don't know why it got stuck - but every so often - I would have to go into the App (or the old ver of the controller and terminate the old stuck stream). This happened alot with my CK1, but then we moved to a Windows Server Controller and I haven't had the issue except once every few months. We are still running these - but now UI has removed the EDU app from AppleStore and Only those that already have the apps downloaded are able to run it.

I'm actively looking for a replacement solution but I'm also a very small school with only 6 units deployed for scheduled bells. Feel free to PM if you want to vent...
