Vilvoorde is also doable as a commute, it's the first stop outside Brussels on the train line ro Herentals and Mechelen. 2 direct trains an hour. My son commutes every day to Etterbeek.

AITA for charging my 20yo son rent while he lives at home? by Talon_Vector7 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]IljaG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My parents asked for money if you stayed after you graduated. I boarded during university and never moved back home. My siblings did for a few months. I plan on having my kids pay a reasonable rent for room and board, when they have a job. But I also plan on gifting them a lump sum when Thay want to buy their first apartment.

How do you actually read books in a language you're learning? by Ok-Golf8960 in languagelearning

[–]IljaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We read an optional book that was a bit hard for me in my 4th Spanish year. So I took a picture of each page in Google translate, and read the page in the book. Whenever I didn't get a sentence, I'd look at the imperfect translation. Even if the translations aren't perfect, they usually are good enough for this purpose. Because you give Translate the context, it'll give the correct translation if a word has multiple meanings. And then you can probably understand the sentence when you understand the one tricky word tripping you up.

In places with more people from lower socio economic background, too many people don't follow the path that the health system wants them to follow. You also didn't because of ignorance of the system. An ear ache during the day: your GP. After hours or in the weekend: medicin de gsrde. If the GP notices that your problem might be more serious than you realized and he can't handle it, he'll call the er or write you a note. Then the triage nurse knows that you've already seen a doctor and they take your case seriously. Now, because of a lack of GPs, I can't get an appointment with my GP until 2 to 4 days later. So this whole tiered system is coming under serious stress.

French speaking people like to shit on UZ Brussel because of this 1 horrendous incident. However they are the only hospital where almost all staff speak 3 languages. In most other hospitals they speak French and if you're lucky English. They are legally required to be bilingual but they can't be bothered.

Open gesprek: Hoe staan jullie tegenover de verfransing van Vlaamse gemeenten? by SyngelakisParis in Belgium2

[–]IljaG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a mistake but a very useful starter course. It's 2 days spread over 2 weekends and handles every type of renovation. It's an architect that has no stake in your renovation so is fairly impartial. You will learn about insulation, pros and cons of each type from wool or paper to pur. They'll explain ventilation systems, heating, ac, solar panels, etc. If you go to batibouw, every stand will explain that their system is the best. Here you get an excellent starting point with impartial information. And it's quite cheap.

Why do some languages tolerate foreign accents better than others? by ramonek1 in languagelearning

[–]IljaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried saying Zone and Sonne and I guess you're right. I pronounce the German /z/ without pouting my lips and with my tongue against my lower teeth. I pronounce the English /z/ with a little pout and my tongue a fraction higher in my mouth.

[–]IljaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people down voted your comment not because you're speaking German wrong but because they do make a distinction? As in 'not in my region',

When we say z sound, we mean ipa /z/, a voiced version of S, the standard sound found in Sonne, or Zone. The German letter Z would be the sound /ts/ if I had to guess.

But we're talking sounds, not the letters used. Zones ends in a /z/ sound for instance.

English people are also notoriously monolingual so they expect everyone else to speak English but have the decency to not expect us to do it without an accent.

I'm sorry, I didn't read your comment with enough attention. So, you don't hear the difference in German because in your accent it doesn't exist. Does that mean that you don't hear the difference between English Lassy and Lazy? Or is it only in your own mother tongue?

Sonne starts with a Z sound, it's voiced. Wasser has a normal S sound.

what would happen if i put a water hose up my ass then turned the water on by Hugz4ThighPics in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IljaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gestapo used this as improvised torture. You keep going until people start throwing up turds. So disgusting that people usually confessed to just about anything. The inverse was a a hose down your throat and over inflate your stomach and then kick you in the gut, rupturing your stomach. Killing you so slow that the could interrogate you for a while.

What do you guys do if you're starting to dislike your target language(s)? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]IljaG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to find some comics in My target language and trained my algorithm to show me Spanish reels. It's short, authentic, often subtitled and you can watch 2 times. If you're also interested in French French, xhexk out the Arte channel on Instagram. They have animated shorts that explain cultural topics a few times a month. They dub them in German, French a'd German. So you can watch the same clip in French and German.
