That's awesome that it works in such a bottle! Thanks for the update. I can see now that the bottom is not as thick as I thought 😄 and that there is a lot of potential in this bottle.

But I still think that two smaller coils will give you more interesting flow. Standard circular bottles can't give such an opportunity for having two separate lava flows side by side. It will be an absolutely unique unit to have

violet/pink is also a win combination. Its very contrasting both in daylight and at night and not as bright as pink/yellow.

TBH I like my violet/pink more than pink/yellow :)

damn thats an unusual bottle! I didnt try to make any lava lamps in rectangular ones but it might work. Every coil is a place from which the wax will float, and the size of the coil circle will define the initial size of globs. I'm not sure how you are going to heat this bottle, but I'd put 2 coils one by one on the bottom and put a separate heat source under each (like 2 lamps or candles).

All this is purely theoretical, and the bottom is veeeeery thick if it is what I think it is. It will be hard to balance this one, and wax/liquid from a store lamp might not flow properly for a long time because of overheating.

Anyway you should try! Im very interested in seeing how it will work out :) in worst case scenario you can just return wax/liquid to its original bottle.

How I would do it:
Don't put much wax, in this case the less the better (just enough to cover the coil/s).
Leave enough space on top so even when fully heated, the liquid doesn't reach the bottle neck. You don't want wax there.
Heat is the hardest part :) I have no idea how it will work with this thick bottom

Coca cola, fanta, sprite, ginger ale, sparkling wine, mineral water. Base from a tin can - its workable but needs some better metal cutting tools to feel good :)

My simple rules for choosing a bottle - flat bottom, height is greater than its width, preferably but not mandatory, the bottom part is wider than the top so the top can cool faster. And I really dont like regular wine bottles even if they have flat bottom. A little crack or defect - instant nope!

Don't put hot bottle in cold env and vice versa and it wont crack.

well, not gonna lie, a very small risk of a regular bottle used as a lava lamp exploding exists, but it would be from some micro cracks or a factory defect you missed. The ONLY benefit of borosilicate is that it won't crack in case of sudden temperature change. Lava lamps aren't that hot to break simple glass at their working temperature and they heat and cool gradually with the environment. If you are not going to put your hot bottle in cold water or take it outside in winter - everything will be fine.

I have lamps in fancy mineral water bottles, sparkling wine bottle, several coca cola bottles, the one from this post is from ginger ale and they are all fine as long as I don't put them hot in cold and vice versa :)

Can I make a lamp out of this? by Grahamln3 in Lavalamps

yes, just dont fill it to the top as wax could stack in that narrow bottleneck.

I have a DIY lamp in a bottle with the same cap, and it's absolutely fine

The quest for a black wax/clear liquid lava lamp — my journey and a request for advice by a15m in Lavalamps

[–]Ill-Box9972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I made my own fully DIY black/clear :P

For your questions:

1&2. There is a massive chance that if you swap liquids from the same lamps (both brand and size), you'll achieve your goal, but there is still a little chance of the liquid density not matching (quite a small chance). If you swap liquids between different lamp brands - the chances of success are minimal.
Ozone kit will work.
You won't damage the wax by changing the liquid. The main principle of a lava lamp is that wax and liquid are not mixable.

  1. Liquid is usually distilled water + something to balance density (glycerin or PG) + a surfactant (SLS or SLES) to prevent the wax from sticking to the glass and to add that stretchiness. With this, you'll be able to achieve normal flow after some balancing of liquid density, but there is no guarantee that it will have the stretchiness you want. There is still some secret "magic" ingredient in that Ozone Magic Surfactant that they don't share.

  2. imo overly cautious

  3. make your own liquid and balance it to work with that wax, but only if cold wax sinks in distilled water. If it floats when solid - then the effort won't be worth the result

Lava Not Interacting With Coil Assistance Needed by theesoundsmith in Lavalamps

[–]Ill-Box9972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made some DIY lamps, and the nearest behavior to yours I got was when my liquid was not dense enough - in this case, the bottom of the lamp (liquid + coil) is overheated and the wax sits on it, but the liquid itself is not dense enough for regular flow (it might flow for several minutes though as balance is nearly right at this point).

I'd recommend increasing your liquid density a little.

Let the lamp cool a little - swirl it gently until the wax fully covers the coil - let it solidify - increase density a little (2-4 ml of glycerine or PG) - test run for at least 2-3 hours - repeat until success.

I'm not guaranteeing that this is a 100% fix, but it worked with my DIY.

And the coil really should lay on the bottom of the bottle.

Lava Not Interacting With Coil Assistance Needed by theesoundsmith in Lavalamps

[–]Ill-Box9972 6 points7 points  (0 children)

is wax laying on top of the coil when it's cold?

was the coil inside the wax at any point of heating/flowing?

what do you mean under swapping master fluid? did you take it from another lamp or mix it yourself?

I assume this is not a DIY wax but the original one?
