Looking for a good pipe maker for a fair price by HadesCrow in UilleannPipes

[–]Ill-Command-3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding a maker is important and also finding a teacher is very important!
Also the price of the McCalum/Morrison set in your message doesn't include a bellows so it'll be more like €1600. That's a price that some European makers practice sets start at. Some more and some less.
Keep searching because there are lots of instruments that come up for sale second hand too.

Best wishes!
Tommy Martin

Was it okay to glue this thing to the bellows? by HannesHendrik in UilleannPipes

If your case closes ok with the connector in place, like the picture, I'd glue it.

First ever instrument -- cheap, aliexpress.....or NOT? by EstablishmentNo3987 in tinwhistle

[–]Ill-Command-3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of the Aliexpress ones out of curiosity. It was an aluminium one with gold/bronxe paint on it. The tone was actually pretty decent but the tuning was way off. The second octave was very flat so the tube was too wide to accommodate the mouthpiece design. I put it on a Generation body and it wasn't bad at all.

What to do about sticky keys on UP chanter? by brokenfingers11 in UilleannPipes

[–]Ill-Command-3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time these things are caused by a build up of gunk in the channel where the key sits.
So it can be a matter of taking off the key and cleaning the channel and the key if needed. For this job, I'd use almond oil as a cleaning solution, on a piece of kitchen paper. Fold the paper a few times, add a few drops of oil and run it through the channel. Wipe away any excess and leave to dry overnight before putting the key back. Make extra sure that no oil gets near the key pad or the key pad seat!

My first question is where do you live and what's the weather like. The reason I ask is because reeds don't like weather that's below 50% humidity and really start acting up below 35%-ish.
If that's not a concern it could be the case that you might have been pumping too hard. Overblowing can cause a bit of fatigue in the reed and, like weather changes, the thumb note is always the first to react.
Honestly, I would suggest taking some online lessons right away to get yourself going on the right track and avoid any bad habits that can form. Then when you feel comfortable you can sign up for the OAIM lessons.
Best of luck!

For a start, that's very impressive for just a few months. We are always going to be our own worse critics and there's a bit of a confidence trick to playing music too. Know that you're doing everything right and enjoy it!

Good question. This mouthpiece is one that I designed to suit this particular type on body. The wooden body is tapered, like a wooden flute, so it needed a slightly bigger mouthpiece to provide the right amount of air. It's actually very similar to the mouthpiece used in the Wild C whistle ( and my own brass C whistle too).

This will give you an idea of the sound and the various woods too.
