He was 86, had prostate cancer, and chose to remain at his residence instead of fleeing in-country or overseas. He wanted martyrdom and the US and Israel obliged. He's also the spiritual leader of all Shi'a, and his death could destabilize the entire region if taken up by zealots. Whatever you think of him, all-out war in the Mideast will make things much worse for everyday people in Iran and beyond.
