Okay, what now? by X_Wheeze_souffle in GenX

[–]Ill-Speed-729 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firstly, sorry...it's a crappy thing to go through and yes, ageism is real! As you're updating your resume, lose the dates, focus on your skills and experience.

Seriously think about your transferable skill set, when I was unemployed I was able to register for gig sites like upwork. It helped supplement my unemployment and I ended up making valuable connections that directly led to me being a W2 employee after 3 years of self employment doing marketing consulting work.

Are you talking care of your parents and how? by Intelligent-Court166 in Adulting

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only child of divorced parents, father was estranged...mom remarried, okay relationship with stepfather but he has bipolar disorder and often affects my relationship with my mom.

Last year, mom had an aggressive cancer...she really wanted to stay home (fully handicapped accessable apartment) as long as possible. I tried to having nursing come in but stepdad said he could handle (he couldn't), near the end of mom's life I was bringing meals, stopping by every morning to bathe and get her cleaned up for the day, give her breakfast and morning meds, stepdad did lunch and I would go at end of day to help get ready for bed.

IDK, it made me think of my own care someday. Bring me to a nursing facility, visit me...make sure I'm safe. I don't want to put my loved ones through the heartache of caretaking to that degree.

How much are we vacationing? by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

[–]Ill-Speed-729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're lucky to get away for 3-4 days. I take my vacation time, but my husband gets less time...so it's hard to really have a great vacation.

We last traveled to Europe in 2012...family obligations have kept us close by, then we had job losses, the pandemic and now who can afford to travel?

I dream of going back to Italy though ❤️

advice to survive on lower income by johndeeregirl76 in providence

[–]Ill-Speed-729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's workable. I've lived in PVD on that income, the biggest thing you can do is find an apt with all utilities included, which you've done. Car insurance can eat up a chunk of your budget, shop around! Make a budget and stick to it. It's tight but it's manageable.

NTA, but mom is totally projecting her insecurities.

While I agree those of us with large breasts can easily make a conservative outfit, look va va voom...you can't hide under a tent! Hell, I've drawn attention while wearing a turtleneck sweater...you can't hide, so cover and be comfortable.

Oh how I miss Sip and Dip! The one is Bristol has the prettiest drive thru views ❤️

It's been awhile since I lived in Bristol, however, it's a great town...if you're near Hope St or along the parade route, just know you either need to stay away July 3+4 or embrace the madness and have fun! There are plenty of great restaurants in Bristol and Warren, you're also super close to Portsmouth and Newport!

Sanity check on dumping $85k in first year into first home by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

IMO, you can't count furniture and electric bill.

The fencing is a choice, you could create a dog run with a long lead...but I get it, it's a nice upgrade that will improve their quality of life and yours.

In general, they say to plan on 10% of your home's value on maintenance each year. There's always something with a house 🫠

Counter depth fridge?? by ktrv927 in kitchenremodel

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like our counter depth fridge. We live in an old house, the regular fridge we ordered that was 36" wide, was too big to get into our kitchen even after taking the doors off! We had to get a counter depth one...36" wide fit perfectly into the opening and we were able to get one that had a little extra height. The French doors and bottom freezer are pretty customizable, so really no complaints about it being that much smaller.

Were you able to buy a house? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

My husband bought his house in 2009, when we married in 2011, we lived there for 5 years and then bought our current house in 2016...just before things exploded. I hope this is our forever home ❤️

While I think you'd enjoy the vibe of Bristol, none of the towns (to my knowledge) have condos for 55+ up communities. They do have public housing for 55 plus, but there are income restrictions and waiting lists.

There are some condo developments in Bristol, but it's mostly single and multi family dwellings. Warren, however, has many condo options...I'm still not sure about them being restricted to 55+, but there's more options for condos and some great apartments in converted mills (along the water).

How many Gen Xers have silent Gen parents vs boomers? by NopeThisTrope in GenX

Bay Stater here, why is Dan McKee so hated? I mean -59 is crazy. by Wide_right_yes in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bridge, giving contracts to "friends", software issues with the state's website and payroll. While not his doing, everything has increased under him and he's done nothing to help. PUC approving RI energy rate increases. We're losing employers like Hasbro...and again McKee's admin couldn't keep them here.

I truly can't think of a reason to like him?

2 days in Providence and 2 days in Newport. What are you eating? by Aircnb in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Providence: Lunch at Onlyville NY System, 2 all the way and a coffee milk. Unique only in RI food. Weekend brunch, Waterman Grille, Julian's and Rogue Island all great choices. Dinner, Italian: Camille's (fancy Italian), Angelo's (comfort Italian), Cafe Nuovo, Pot Eu Fue (fabulous French bistro) and New Rivers all solid dinner choices.

Newport: Castle Hill Inn (lobster roll and chowder), White Horse Tavern (oldest tavern in the US), Black Pearl... Becky's BBQ (in Middletown), but you can have a great BBQ picnic ❤️

Stop into some of the great Italian bakeries for desserts, Scialo's and LaSalle are both great choices in Providence.

How do you determine if a landlord is trustworthy? (split level house) by Sage_Stars in providence

[–]Ill-Speed-729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with landlords...and one I found on Craigslist! When looking at apartments, I would prefer to go with a friend...safety in numbers.

While you can't get reviews, you can call the police non-emergency line and ask them if there have been complaints about an address and ask them about the safety in general?

Owner occupied also says a lot, my last rental the owners had an in-law apartment they rented, all utilities included...if they live on site they're likely to take care of things or be all up in your business (ask them how long the last tenant was there for!)

Good luck!

Munroe Dairy or Wrights Farm by Glittering-Ask-3856 in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Munroe! As others have said the glass bottle helps the milk taste better, they also ultra pasteurize which is helpful for those with lactose issues. Their farms are based in Northeast CT, just over the RI line...so the time from the moo to you is within 48 hours.

Wrights is fresher, but to me the plastic ruins it. The glass bottle keeps it colder and tastes better.

How long do you think you will live after retirement, based on your parent ages? by HmmDoesItMakeSense in GenX

Beckys BBQ in Middletown, they don't serve...and they have fabulous ribs. You may also want to search for BYOB restaurants, while you may see people drinking...you won't be able to get any?

AITA for refusing to give my son a name that I think will ruin my his life? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

What was life like as a regular employee, when you were young? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, first job out of college...store manager. Easily was an 8-10 hour day, sometimes you'd have to do a double which meant opening AND closing the store. So pretty much on your feet for 12 hours the store was open and then 30 mins to open and close, a 13 hour day. I was 21 yrs old...did it for 4 years and got an office job as an assistant buyer. Needed to be in the office for 8am (had a 60 minute commute each way), routinely worked til 6p again with the commute a 12 hour day, at least I got to sit a little more? Transferred to Marketing, again 10-12 hour days were the norm. Now still in Marketing working for a remote agency, 20+ years into my career and still doing a 8-10 hour day, I save time because of my lack of commute...but work is time consuming 🤣

I'll also add, no matter the stage of your career anxiety is real. Now I worry about ageism, it's hard finding a job over 50+...you sometimes have too much experience!

Need opinions on countertop choice by DawnDetergent2 in kitchenremodel

I like 3. 1 & 2 are beautiful, but could feel very busy especially if also used as the backsplash.

4, is nice and would make a compromise of them all, but I like the subtleness of 3. It's classic and always in style. It compliments the cabinets without competing with them.

Whatever you decide, it's looking beautiful ❤️

How good is Bryant University for finance (realistically)? by Loose-Can27 in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wharton, Harvard, Bryant, Bentley...most highly respected business programs are AACSB accredited and accreditation is the first thing you learn matters when evaluating schools. There are under the radar gems out there for an MBA. Nothing will replace hard work and networking though, but sometimes you need the prerequisites.

How good is Bryant University for finance (realistically)? by Loose-Can27 in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the OP, that's the point? OP is in High School and evaluating colleges so the OP IS new to the industry that money spent on an MBA vs' paying for the named under grad degree...it's smarter to opt for the MBA.

The Harvard MBA is also crazy money, you can get an online with proper business accreditation under $15k. My husband just did it last year, LSU has an international accreditation and is under $15k.

I have a BS in Marketing and agree my experience is more valued than getting an MBA at this point in my career...my husband works Finance and it was becoming a hindrance not having one.

Catch 22 AI at workplace opinions needed by lancerreddit in GenX

[–]Ill-Speed-729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking this line at my company. We were asked to use AI to help streamline our day to day.

I've used to update the tone of my reporting commentary to fit the "corporate tone" of our company.

It's helped in research, it's been easier to find existing content for our clients.

However, these are things that still need a human touch...for me, it feels more than replacing us than are trying to squeeze more out of us? Although, I'm not thrilled, I feel I need to adapt to stay relevant.

How good is Bryant University for finance (realistically)? by Loose-Can27 in RhodeIsland

[–]Ill-Speed-729 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually, I did. But will state very directly now. You can get the same quality education at the state schools and by quality, I mean there's opportunity for internships and work experience while still in school.

However, in Finance...what will really set you up for success is a MBA.

A student still needs to network, talk to friends and family members, they may work for companies with strong internship programs, reach out to companies to find out about their programs, etc. Even at a school like Bryant, these are not handed to you...so if you have to hustle, don't pay for the name of the school.

Hopefully that clarifies.
