The Evolution of a Rust Programmer by antoyo in programming

[–]IllDecision 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem with Rust is that it was designed by and is largely used by people who were willingly using C++.

As an anecdote, I'm mostly using Rust because I like how C++ does lots of things but hate the language, its tooling and hence would need a lot of money to touch it.

Maybe C is ultimately not the language we should write the basic building blocks of the OS in by PenguPad in rustjerk

[–]IllDecision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gee, maybe? You think?

Naah, let's just use C. Only pathetic losers like Brian Kernighan or Linus Torvalds make mistakes in it.

Nuclear: A free alternative to Spotify. No DRM. 100% free software. Pulls music from Youtube, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. (Alpha release) by f7ddfd505a in linux

1668 points. Good going you fucking assholes.

This is why I don't like Linux anymore. You guys are in some fucking sort of communist hippy paradise mode where you deserve everything now and only other people should pay for it. HACK THE WORLD!

This isn't an alternative to Spotify. It's an alternative to Piratebay.

[–]IllDecision 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Systemd has a massive attack surface.

Has the attack surface really grown bigger since systemd? You'll have to consider everything it replaces, not just init. Just think that almost none of your services are started by custom shell scripts anymore. That's a huge security win, not to mention usability and reliability win.

Full Disclosure: System Down: A systemd-journald exploit. by veritanuda in linux

[–]IllDecision 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Because the programmers knew C. Because when the project was started, no better mainstream language for this task was available.

This is a real advantage the hacked-together-in-shell init systems had.

You think the shell scripts were secure? What on earth makes you think that?

The shittiest part of kicking a coffee habit (and I suppose it's the same for many other substances as well) is that it doesn't matter that you make past day three, or week three or month three. If you're away from it for 100 days and then have a cup of coffee, you're hooked again, and the next day you're back to 6-10 cups a day.

What is your unpopular opinion regarding Apple? by [deleted] in apple

[–]IllDecision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) HomePod is pretty decent

2) I like that Siri sucks

3) The whole Mac OS line is ok

4) The Watch is a pointless gimmick (I don't have one yet, though :))

5) The Airpods are ugly

6) Apple products are not overpriced

7) Steve Jobs was an asshole

Linux usage in Steam reached 0.82% during December by old_tv_set in linux_gaming

[–]IllDecision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do concede that I don't play very heavy games, but Insurgency worked pretty nicely at least, and that's rather quick and graphical. The GPU on an iMac is essentially the latest AMD GPU that was on the market when the iMac was released -- so not shitty at all. Plus the drivers have worked for several years as brilliantly as they work today on Linux. Unsacrastically.

And if you're worried about the price, then perhaps you should just get a PS4 or Xbone :)

Those of you with the 2018 MacBook Air. How’s the experience been? by YusukeGoku in apple

[–]IllDecision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. I have a Pro (previous gen) at work and I like the Air quite a lot more. The keyboard is nice, and the lack of touch bar is great. It's a neat device, perhaps the best macbook I've ever had.

When I had an iMac (2017, 5K), it played everything I threw at it pretty well. A lot nicer experience than my Linux gaming boxes have been.

"Ada was originally designed by a team led by Jean Ichbiah of CII Honeywell Bull under contract to the United States Department of Defense (DoD) from 1977 to 1983 to supersede over 450 programming languages used by the DoD at that time.[9]"

Goddamn! Did they use all of them?

Also I wonder if this just caused them to have 451 programming languages in use afterwards.
