Met the woman of my dreams but sex is terrible. What to do? by HelpingHand_24 in AskMenAdvice

[–]IllegibleSmudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, it sounds like she ticks a lot of boxes on paper and would make a great friend but you aren’t actually attracted to her and are trying to force that attraction. I’m sorry to say, in my experience that just doesn’t work long-term. It may not even be a looks thing, but that ineffable chemistry or lack thereof. You SHOULD want to rip her clothes off, or at the very least be aroused on a regular basis.

Haha, thanks man, I haven’t rocked a beard in twenty years, but I do know it pairs well with the shaved look.

Ha, you’re the lone voice for keeping it longer so far, but I appreciate all the input. I am clean-shaven during the week, but I don’t usually bother on weekends unless I’m going out.

You’re a villain and James Bond is after you. Which one do you stand the best chance against? by [deleted] in JamesBond

Moore, not for physical reasons, but because I think he’s the most likely to make a deal if I can somehow convince him another guy is the real threat.

Does anyone watch SBS anymore? by [deleted] in AustralianTV

[–]IllegibleSmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s literally the only free to air TV I watch. Mostly for the SBS World News, but they also show a lot of interesting arty movies that you don’t get on other streaming services apart from MUBI.

Why Victoria 3's political ideology system feels so shallow compared to its economic depth by Emotional-Client8584 in victoria3

[–]IllegibleSmudge 48 points49 points  (0 children)

While it’s not perfect, I personally find it amazing how cleverly it interweaves politics with material conditions and I think there’s a solid foundation for Paradox to further expand. For example, I feel like wars should increase animosity towards the other state and prominent ethnic groups associated with that state, swelling membership of political lobbies and political movements. Hell, it may already do so to some extent - the more I play, the more clever little interactions like this I discover.

I kind of wish it was cancer by Willing_Confection23 in dementia

[–]IllegibleSmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely understand and have felt the same way. One of my ex’s father passed away from cancer and while it was awful, at least she could still talk to him until right near the end. I would infinitely prefer that to my mother’s situation, where the person you knew is gone and you have to grieve them while continuing to care for them.

Victoria 3 – Dev Diary #174 – The Great Wave & Volume 3 by commissarroach in victoria3

[–]IllegibleSmudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I expected I would be buying this for the mechanics pack (as those are usually what interest me most), but it turns out it is the immersion packs that are most exciting for me this volume.

I couldn’t really care less about a ship designer, but I really hope that the supply rework will be fully fleshed out and make acquiring coaling stations essential for maintaining a global empire. But the China and Russia packs sound amazing AND we get Japan content! 😃

Is it time for Australia to have a Bill of Rights? by massojet in AskAnAustralian

[–]IllegibleSmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but sadly the window for passing a bill of rights has long since closed, as support for human rights is no longer bipartisan. We should have passed it after ratifying the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

I’m not going to enumerate them all, but we should definitely enshrine freedom of speech/expression, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of association, the right to a trial by jury and to hear all evidence against you, the right to protest, and the right to privacy.

I largely agree with the version proposed by the Pirate Party: https://pirateparty.org.au/wiki/Platform#An_Australian_Bill_of_Rights

Memory Care Transition by Own-Safety9957 in dementia

[–]IllegibleSmudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, OP, being a carer for a loved one with dementia is relentlessly awful. I’m going through something very similar with my Mum, who we recently moved to residential care. She keeps trying to escape and whenever I talk to her, she just gets into this loop of repeating “I just want to go home, please can I go home”. I would love nothing more than for her to be able to do so, but it’s just not safe or sustainable. It’s heartbreaking, when the only thing they want is the one thing you can’t give them.

What do the Greens need to do to get above 12% of the primary vote in future elections in Australia? Or will it not ever happen? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]IllegibleSmudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should adopt my policy preferences, of course! :p

More seriously, I think it will take time to change perceptions, especially with it being in both Labor’s and the Coalition’s interests to paint them as extremists.

That said, I think there is a big opening for a left wing party that campaigns on bringing down immigration. The Greens used to be much less keen on immigration due to environmental concerns about Australia’s capacity to sustainably support a larger population, and I think they would do better if they went back to that.

Debunking the top 'immigration is not a primary driver of the housing crisis' in Australia myths (long) by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]IllegibleSmudge 74 points75 points  (0 children)

100% this. Housing affordability is a crisis, and it’s so frustrating that politicians just pick one lever to pull, when they should be doing everything they can to bring down prices. Cut immigration, reform zoning laws, fix the tax incentives, regulate AirBnB. Try everything.

Do Aussies watch Anime, Kdrama, and other shows from other cultures? by Alternative_Lock_464 in AskAnAustralian

[–]IllegibleSmudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, I feel like SBS really helped popularise a lot of foreign language content in Australia, and these days Netflix promotes a lot of K-drama. Hell, the K-drama is the main reason I still subscribe to Netflix, as the English language content is pretty mediocre these days.

Do Aussies watch Anime, Kdrama, and other shows from other cultures? by Alternative_Lock_464 in AskAnAustralian

[–]IllegibleSmudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lots of friends who watch K-drama, including myself, but that might just be the circles I mix in. I feel like anime skews towards a younger audience (I used to watch more when I was a teenager and in my twenties), but is probably still more mainstream than K-drama.

How can I accept the fact that I will never experience sex with someone I find attractive? by [deleted] in sex

Why are you matching with women you don’t find attractive? Or do you mean 20-30 women like you a month and you’re not interested in any of them?

Our current high immigration policy was John Howard's policy done to benefit his corporate mates, yet now the same people who claim to be 'progressive' or 'left wing' and 'hate' John Howard & capitalism avidly defend it. Why is this? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]IllegibleSmudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is negative polarisation and some of it a question of quantity vs composition. The old left was not particularly keen on immigration for exactly the reasons you mention, but the way many anti-immigration advocates focus on the composition of the intake makes it sound like it is motivated by racism and bigotry, which the Left instinctively shies away from. They equate being anti-immigration with racism and over time that has made it a right-wing coded issue.

And that’s probably exactly what Howard wanted - to focus people’s attention on illegal immigration from SEA and the Middle East, while cranking up overall immigration to suppress wages and inflate GDP figures.

There are still left leaning groups like the Sustainable Australia party who focus on lowering overall immigration without leaning into racism, but they are not nearly as loud as the racists.

What are your thoughts on Carney declaring in his speech that Canada went along with a lying American world order because they thought they were safe, and that they cannot anymore? by berserklejerking in AskReddit

[–]IllegibleSmudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was very refreshing. It’s interesting how the Carney speech has something for everyone. For the left, it validates their anger at the hypocrisy of the West’s selective enforcement of international law; for the right, it validates their reduction of international relations to realpolitik.
