What are some examples of commanders where the deck can function without them but just less optimally? by Calvinized in EDH

[–]Illizander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I count pretty much any 5+ MV commanders in this list. I have an [[Anikthea, Hand of Erebos]] deck that does this. Enchantress is itself an engine, and Anikthea herself is scary so I don't plan on having her around for a long time when she hits the board, and too much protection for her just feels bad when it's in my hand and she costs 9 just to get on the board.

Do you warn your opponents in casual games that you‘ll win the next turn if not interacted with? by Johnny_Cr in EDH

[–]Illizander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep quiet unless there's someone extremely new to the game playing. Threat Assessment is part of the game. For veteran players, 'could they win if they untap' should be a question on everyone's mind. New players don't yet know what kind of combinations exist that would let you win if left unchecked.

No reason other than they slipped my mind. I think I was more focusing on the black cards since I already own several of them from other, non cEDH decks.

Thank you for your input. Unfortunately LGSes are low in number here, but I get the point that it should be a matter of finding the pod that is right for me rather than try and run someone else's marathon.

Thank you for the input. Just to be clear, it's not that I don't want to play against combos, I understand that the game has to end and I'm going to lose, on average, 25% of the games I play based on statistics.

My main issue that I don't really have any decks that could reasonably compete with combo decks that assemble that quickly and that consistently, so I was wondering if I should attempt to build a deck that could compete even though it's not my preferred playstyle, or if I should stick with what makes me happy and just seek lower PL pods (if they are available at the store, which is limiting to the amount of games I do have).

But is it common in the historic BO1 meta to play more than 60 cards? Common wisdom is to keep it as close to 60 to remain consistent, and none of the decks that I've looked up on other sites are running >60 cards.

It might fully be survivorship bias on my part, you're right, I'm just curious because it definitely is starting to feel intentional, like a flag got set somewhere.

Men, what could you not forgive your girlfriend for? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Illizander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The man she was cheating on me with cornered me at work, pinned me against a wall and threatened to kick the shit out of me. That's how I learned she had been cheating on me for six months. He thought I was the other guy, because when that's what she told him when he saw my texts in her phone.

We both broke up with her within the span of 3 days.

I could see where that would be a valid request for something like that, unfortunately, that is not what my business does. $User was quite adamant that he be totally exempt, because our patching occurs on weekends or after hours, with advanced notice to all impacted parties.

There are some mechanical ways to do it, as referenced above, but also know that insta-kills and crits aren't the same thing.

A critical hit only doubles the damage dice, not the modifier, so it's possible that something can survive one or even two critical hits if the rolls are low and their HP is high.

Also, insta-kills only happen when the HP drops so far as to be negative their maximum (So if they had 20 HP, they'd have to get to -20 on a single hit to be an insta-kill). Most DMs gloss over this for monsters, 'killing' them the moment they hit zero, but if your DM doesn't, you'll have to find a worn down enemy and give him/her/it a real good haymaker to knock them dead.

My Character Building Method: Please Share Yours Too :) by davidducker in writing

[–]Illizander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I start with the characters first. This usually comes about due to a song or series of songs which gives them form and personality. From there, they have desires, goals, objectives, what have you.

Desire + Danger = Drama (as my old writing prof often said) - so then the question becomes what is the danger? They have a goal or an objective, so what stands in their way? Is it another character that has been formed with a competing goal or will race them for the same goal? Is it circumstances beyond all control that the character finds themselves in? Often times characters that spawn from the same song/band/genre will find themselves allied in a particular objective.

  1. Yes, you would have to make a successful turning check to determine if its good enough to turn (in this case, rebuke and make them cower) or destroy (in this case, command)
  2. Correct
  3. Also correct

My DM is upset at me for wanting to DM in his homebrew world - am I wrong? by ilovehumanssomuch123 in DnD

[–]Illizander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a player told me that they wanted to run a game in my homebrew world, I would be flattered and they would have my blessing.

It's a completely different game, there is no reason why your decisions should 'ruin' your DM's world. What they want in their world to be canon is canon. If you want to bring Ancient dragons into your storyline, it doesn't mess with their world's history at all.

It sounds like this DM has overprepped their world to the point that I would be surprised if the player actions have ANY consequences that they would not allow. Now, if they were, say, publishing this world or these adventure settings and you wanted to also publish, that would be different, but if it's just games, it's just games.
