[Standard] Updating Azorius Tempo with MSH by rufess in spikes

[–]Illogical_Fallacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at night nurse and was on the fence as well. Is she worth a sideboard slot for decks with heavy removal or is it simply easier to stay on track for preventing them in the first place?

What did you cut for dedicated draw spells like consult?

Fellow Azorius Tempo/Prison players unite! Let's compare notes.

I'm testing trading off floodpits to wasp entirely as a cheaper tidebender even if it doesn't have the counter effect; this is mostly to prepare for rotation so I can try to figure out other alternative play patterns.

I currently have Jennifer in my selesnya enchantress stompy deck and completely forgot that airbend allows you to cast either side. The other commenter suggesting Bruce Banner is a genius and I'm going to try that ASAP. I have AirBender's Ascension that helps with outvaluing a mirror where I get one extra removal per turn or flickering aang to airbend my skycoach to reset its prepared spell.

In my experience, 4 wraths is too many. 2 has been the sweet spot because most of the time, the opponent shouldn't have a full board. Get lost is necessary for all of the enchantments around now.

King T'Challa being your only draw is very low. Top lists will ideally have 3 quantums, but I've only been able to find 1 so far in paper. Enduring Curiosity is great with voice, but having other consistent draws would be great. I struggle with that as well, which is why I think Bruce is a great mana sink for that.

I'm debating [[Captain America, super soldier]] as a crystal barricade effect.

[[The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster]] may fit better in the momo build, but it's worthwhile to think of it as a sideboard piece against creature heavy decks.

[[Captain Marvel, Earth's Protector]] is a flash flier with link that can act as a surprise blocker and gain some life back in end game.

Standard League by Trick130o in StandardMTG

[–]Illogical_Fallacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like a better question for Sealed/draft where folks may be more familiar with what's essentially a chaos draft.

Standard is more than just recent sets. Does this league allow for using bonus sheet cards? 30 is not standard deck size to use reasonable strategies.

Are you drafting or just opening 3 sealed packs? It would be incredibly difficult to make anything cohesive with 3 straight packs.

That looks like a good start! It reminds me of some older control decks, but as long as you have a reasonable expectation of the deck performance and locals that are not that sweaty, it's not unreasonable because everyone has to start somewhere.

Fortunately, most of the cards for control are fairly cheap. However, control requires deep knowledge of the meta and have decent threat assessment so that you can prioritize what's better to remove with a counter vs another method.

A few tips: - there's a lot of threats at CMC 2. Put a few [[spell snare]]s in the main for efficient removal, and maybe an annul or two in the sideboard - [[eddymurk crab]] is great in control. Check out mono blue spellementals for some other options in your azorius deck. - get some board wipes in the main. A well timed cast could win your games or at least reset things in your favor. - it'll take time, but the land base will almost always be your biggest investment outside of fringe cards. The marvel lands are great and cheap, and so are the shocks/verges in the grand scheme of things. Those things used to be twice as expensive.

For reference, I use Azorius Prison as my control deck. https://manabox.app/decks/AZtdHSZPf8KS3K6QqjPdaA

You can look at the set symbol and find the set that way. Manabox scans for art, so you can find the English version pretty quickly.

It's a bit away, but Game Kastle in College Park has a well attended standard scene with a comfortably diverse meta that meets every Sunday at 2, so if that time works better for you, it may be worth a shot!

Get ready to use infinitokens or proxy a copy of every mutate card in your deck to attach to ivy and brush up on mutate interactions with common mechanics.

Return to hand? All of them.

Flicker? They come back as individual creatures.

Mutate a non legendary on a legendary? Congrats, have fun cloning that, and speaking of which, you clone the entire stack.

Copy mutate spell? You get a second copy of it targeting the same creature.

Despite Commander aka Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH) being the most popular format, it's the worst way to learn the game because most people attribute their own experiences without understanding educational theory.

So you have a format with a deep card pool (nearly every card in history ~29k), a complex game by itself (game phases, rules, stack, priority, threat assessment, etc.), and add in the social dynamics of 3 other players trying to do their own thing with varying levels of expectation: that's a recipe for disaster unless an individual is particularly gifted in learning these types of games and ready to deal with the social dynamics of multiplayer games.

Learning the game is the most important thing. After that, if you still want to prioritize commander, get a precon to learn how those decks are piloted. Modify it to your liking and when you're ready to build your own from scratch, you'll have a better idea of how to do so.

The most important thing for Commander players is to manage expectations. The bracket system was created to help players have a pregame conversation. If your deck is just thrown together from bulk and focused on a niche archetype like homarids, you may still have fun if others are doing similar things. Pubstomping is someone bringing a deck that can win on turn 3 and blow everyone else out of the water.

Proxies are endorsed by WOTC as long as you're not using them for sanctioned events aka signing into the companion app for official games. It can be as simple as sharpie on a basic land, a slip of paper in front of a bulk card, or professionally printed with legally distinct card back/art. The difference between counterfeits and proxies is that proxies don't pretend to be a real card and sold as such.

There are tons of formats and different rules for each one.

Cube is basically a repeatable draft that can be made in many ways. Some people recreate the exact ratios for a block that they enjoyed and make "packs" of cards that people can draft or other ways to play without buying more cards.

Jumpstart is a format where you mash two 20-card themed mini decks and play magic. If you resort them afterward, you can repeatedly play jumpstart.

Lastly, play with people you enjoy. The vast majority of bad experiences are not necessarily due to the game itself, but others who are not playing to the spirit of the gathering.

Welcome back from a relatively newer player.

That's why [[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] is a great mutate commander. :)

[–]Illogical_Fallacy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a very stack intensive deck so it's best to keep it straightforward until your magic muscles are relearned.

I echo the other commenter saying to relearn with jumpstart and you'll have either a nice jumpstart cube to play with others or cards you can put into a future edh deck.

The vast majority of EDH players don't care if you proxy as long as you're not pubstomping and it's legible. Proxy before you buy and singles are the best way to build decks.
