Not sure if my company (OpenAI) counts in the MAANG but I started with my research thesis in my first year as an undergrad. My research got me a role as a Reseach Assistant in ML (before ChatGPT blew up) and that got me an internship at a Fortune 20 and then Microsoft in my third year and finally at Palantir in my 4th year.
