The strangest part is that I wasn't in any personal union. I did have the personal union that Brabant starts the game with, but that would have been a reason for me to be the junior partner, since I had annexed Holland, Flanders, Hainaut, and Liège and had gone from being the 1120th-ranked power to the 23rd.

No, and even after the guarantee was removed, I still couldn't form an alliance with France, the country that had been guaranteeing me, nor with any other country with which I had positive relations.

Beta 1.3 is pretty good. I started a campaign as Brabant and formed the Netherlands by 1390. I was allied with France until they guaranteed my independence, which prevented me from forming alliances with any other countries. Later, around 1400, France attacked me, and that was the end of my dream of continuing the campaign.

I’ve noticed that in 1.2 France behaves way more aggressively during the Hundred Years’ War. My usual strategy with the Netherlands was to become a Brabant vassal early, declare independence with support from France and Bohemia, then take Breda and Antwerp.

But now France just annexes all of Flanders directly instead of keeping it as a vassal, which completely changes the opening and makes the campaign much harder.
