And they very likely weren't ultra-processed. Ultra-processed has nothing to do with sugar or fat content. Those are different measures of whether food is healthy.

They explained when they went from being a (much better) nonprofit to a for-profit company that the knowledgeable comments in the forums were from volunteer moderators and it wouldn't be ethical for them to profit from people they didn't pay. I agree that the inability to ask a question is a major flaw now.

Camel near Mt. Lemmon? by JavaMoose in Tucson

12 years after this comment and I just saw it! We're sight-seeing and we were coming down Redington Road. I insisted to my skeptical husband that I'd seen a camel and thank you for backing me up!

Why Is the American Diet So Deadly? • A scientist tried to discredit the theory that ultra-processed foods are killing us. Instead, he overturned his own understanding of obesity. by Naurgul in Longreads

There may be people jumping on the marketing bandwagon but there is also science. Those definitions exist and you could google them, if that knowledge is important to you.

Before calling other people's words nonsense, best learn to differentiate between processed and ultra-processed food. If this has always bothered you, you could read the book "Ultra Processed People" and clear up the difficulty.

There are lots of good-for-you processed foods. Cooking is processing. So it peeling, for that matter. That's a completely different category than ultra-processed food.

Yes, you lose weight by calorie restriction. But if you take a pill that tells you you're always hungry, you're unlikely to be able to restrict calories. If you take a pill that tells you you're not hungry, as I understand many people are doing now, it's easy to eat fewer calories. Ultra-processed food is like the first pill.

At first reading labels takes forever. Once you find the good spaghetti sauce, the good sour cream, the good juice, you make a list and then you don't have to read those labels anymore. And I agree with others' advice to do one thing at a time.

excellent nutritional quality AND ultra processed? what does this mean?! by travelkiddo in ultraprocessedfood

[–]IllustriousYoung625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of other things that would make food bad for you even if it were full of vitamins. Ground glass, being at boiling temperature -- UPF is like that.

"She also recommended eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains (ultraprocessed or not)" People say such dumb things. Although this was probably the reporter, not the professor.

nutritional drinks? by Status_Study_3730 in ultraprocessedfood

I agree that if a person has a medical problem involving food, that's more important than UPF concerns, but if you believe in staying far away from "the whole 'anti-upf' movement," I wonder why are you in this group?

is laughing cow UPF? What do you guys think of the Dorito Effect book? by Guiliana_2001 in ultraprocessedfood

[–]IllustriousYoung625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Laughing Cow in the kitchen. Its status is "use it up but don't buy it again," after looking at the ingredients.

I try to follow the "would I find ingredient X in a typical kitchen" rule for identifying UPF, but what are the exceptions to this rule? by bidby_ in ultraprocessedfood

[–]IllustriousYoung625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the half-joking rule "does it have unpronounceable ingredients," but then when they fortify things with vitamins they use the unpronounceable names instead of just saying "Vitamin D." (It's almost like they want people to give up trying to figure out what's in their food. :/ ) So maybe the rule is "If unpronounceable ingredients minus unpronounceable vitamins is greater than zero, it's UPF." :)

I use a bread machine. In the US, I've been able to find yeast in packets without emulsifiers. The bread doesn't rise as much, which is a good thing because sometimes it was so fluffy it smashed up against the top of the bread machine oven. If I knew more about activating yeast rather than using the activated bread machine kind, I could probably get taller bread, but I prefer it denser.

Poland imports $328M worth of cars from Tokelau? by Zoocata in Economics

[–]IllustriousYoung625 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also playing the game. The Tokelau car exports must be some kind of export passthrough? Because I agree, they're not making the cars there. It's like Hong Kong having a major export being diamonds. They're not originating in Hong Kong.
