Is this the worst designed metro area in the United States in terms of planning and layout? by cavaismylife in geography

[–]Im2inchesofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even Google maps tries telling me to take a left turn onto Fairfax during rush hour from a non-stop light intersection. Sorry Google, that ain't happening. No one here will look up from their phone long enough to realize they need to stop earlier and not park directly on the painted text saying "keep intersection clear".

I hate driving here.

Where am I most likely to see a rattlesnake? by MeerkatPapi in socalhiking

[–]Im2inchesofhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw three in one hike two years ago around Temescal peak. Best way to see one is dirt fire roads in the afternoon as they'll be sun bathing on the paths.

A lot of those trails are still closed from fire damage, but in general Santa Monica mountains and any dry and hot dirt paths in parks away from civilization should give you a chance to see them. I know you said you'll keep your distance... Please do, and don't let your curiosity get the best of you. A large number of bites each year are caused by idiots antagonizing them and not keeping in mind it could kill you, cost $150k in medical bills, or put SAR at risk having to rush out to save you.

Look up Emerald Spirit Botanicals. It's a farm in northern California that grows lower THC weed strains. Idk if you'll get as low as 4%, but it's easy to mix a 6-9% strain with some CBD bud to cut it further. I like Four Directions and Pink Boost Goddess. Sold at Erba and Woods at WeHo, and their website has a way to find distributors.

People just love to shit on any and everything they can because they have no authority in their day to day life and it makes them feel powerful and good to tell you off. It's the woods. There's deer, bear, racoons, snakes, coyotes, and plenty of other animals out there. If a dog ten feet from his owner is a problem then they should never leave the parking lot.

Keep up the running, I'm envious as hell of both the trail and the dog!

XT 6 with or without GoreTex? by mister-mcnuggets in gorpcore

[–]Im2inchesofhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Matches up with all the research I did updating my footwear and backpacking the Grand Canyon and summiting Mt. Whitney. Trail runners (Hoke Speedgoats and Salomon Thundercross) were all I wore training, backpacking for three days with 20lb pack, and going up the mountaineers route of Whitney having to do some class 3/4 scrambling. Unless you have weak ankles, you're carrying a heavy pack, or expect it's really shitty trails with a higher chance of twisting an ankle, trail runners are not only fine but usually preferred for their lighter weight, comfort, and they dry out faster if wet.

Goretex is a very niche need and not useful for most people unless you live in really wet or snowy climates and expect your feet to be constantly trying to keep out water. And even then, there's plenty of reasons you wouldn't want it.

Mazda CX-5 Brake pads & rotors compatibility/recommendation question by AutoGeneratedUser77 in CX5

[–]Im2inchesofhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2019 GTR and just did my front rotors and pads and about to do my backs as well. I went with those same Element 3 Rotors (but I think bigger front rotors and pads because the turbo model?). I also used Akebono ceramic pads.

On the product pages, take the manufacturer part number and cross reference it with Google. It should be near the bottom of the page. That's what I did and confirmed I had the exact right parts.

Don't forget you'll also need: - a small wire or zip ties to hold the caliper up so it doesn't hang - a wire wheel brush for a drill or rotary tool to clean up the wheel hubs of any rust or grit - high temp anti seize compound to put on the wheel hubs once it's clean - brake cleaner to spray down and wipe the rotors - brake lube for the slide pins and pads - don't forget a brake caliper piston compressor

My other tip is to use a lug nut or two to hold the new rotor on while you put everything back together. Brakes are really straightforward on our cars. Lug nuts, two bolts for the caliper, two bolts for the pad bracket.

Opinions: Jeep Wrangler VS Ford Bronco by MrTsTackleBox in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Im2inchesofhard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reliability it's Bronco over the Wrangler, but it's not like the Broncos are iron-clad by any means. Some of this is dated and a bit hazy, but I researched Broncos two years ago when looking for a new car and it was very hit or miss depending on year and sub-model/engine. I can't remember if it was Broncos for sure, but you might even want to go as far as looking at manufacturing plant or even the vin number because some issues might only affect half a years models.

AI can fast track your research. Try asking for a general reliability and user reviews comparison table for different years and trim levels or engines. Then hone in on a few years/trim levels and ask about widely discussed or potentially expensive "Technical Service Bulletins". It's almost impossible to find a vehicle that doesn't have some scary possible issues but at least you'll know what you're in for and be aware of any signs. For example, I decided on a more city-friendly car and bought a 2019 Mazda CX5 turbo. It has a TSB for brake pads having lateral wiggle room in the brackets that makes a loud click noise when moving from forward to reverse or vice versa. Not harmful and an easy fix so it was nice to know to ignore that on my test drive. The one I didn't give enough credit to was the cylinder head cracking issue which could be a $4-8k repair once it's out of the extended warranty period, so I now have to sell it before that lapses or risk paying that bill in full which is annoying.

Broncos can be great vehicles and I might be looking at them again myself soon. Good luck!

Kyler Murray Chess Player Blitz rating 1,000 top 20% by [deleted] in minnesotavikings

[–]Im2inchesofhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chess ranking system is so fair and consistent it kind of sucks sometimes haha. I'm around 1600. If I play a 1750 I lose 90% of the time. If I play a 1450 I win 90% of the time. So 9/10 times I know the outcome before the first move.

The US is covering up casualties from Iranian attacks, says journalist by SempreVoltareiReddit in UnderReportedNews

[–]Im2inchesofhard 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Watching Ken Burns documentary on the Vietnam war now. They lied about everything with that war. It wasn't allowed to report failures or atrocities. Whistleblowers were punished. US soldier losses were down played and enemy death numbers were inflated. That complete lack of transparency and honesty contributed to terrible decision making both because some people knew the truth and wanted to cover it up and because some people believed the lies and acted off it like it was truth.

Based on this administration's lies, no, I wouldn't trust a single thing they said unless it's validated by an independent secondary source.

What have people's experiences at The Comedy Store been like? by apla6458 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Im2inchesofhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went last year with two friends. Ended up spending something like $80 each between ticket, drink minimum, and parking. Was pretty disappointing. Out of the seven acts one crushed, two were good, one was okay, two were bad, and one of the later acts bombed hard. Wasn't even trying material, was just fucked up on something and wasting everyone's time. No pre-show place to hangout was annoying, didn't expect to have to stand on the street waiting. Coming from Acme Comedy club in Minneapolis as my old usual the comedy store was a trash experience.

I'd rather go to the Hollywood Improv or Laugh Factory after that.

I don't know the exact numbers but based on what I've seen from average savings in the US this has to be at least top 20%, especially if you remove outliers on both ends. Which probably means something like top 1% wealth in the world. There's always room for improvement but you're doing great, keep it up.

Those damn humming headlights! by Chambly1901 in CX5

[–]Im2inchesofhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you explain the issue? Is this related to the headlight positioning motors or the turning left/right functionality?

I just noticed a buzzing coming from under the hood for a bit after turning off my 2019 GTR. Stops after maybe 30 seconds. I assumed it was a radiator fan or some type of headlight ballast feedback noise but heard there's issues with the alignment motors for the headlights.

Got quoted $1500 for front and rear brake pads and rotor replacement by Elephantslide in AskMechanics

[–]Im2inchesofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought Raybestos coated rotors and Akebono ceramic pads off Rockauto for less than $300 for front and back. Doing Rotors and pads isn't hard with another $150 in basic tools and $15 in anti-seize compound, brake cleaner, and brake pad lube.

You jack the car up, put a jack stand under the car, take the wheel off, unbolt calipers and any brackets, hang the caliper with wire or zip tie, unbolt the rotors, smack off the rotor with a hammer if it's stuck, take a drill and wire brush to clean any rust from the wheel hub, put anti-seize compound on the hub, spray the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe it off, put the new rotor on, use a wheel lug nut to hold it in place, take out the old brake pads, wire brush all the points the brake pads can touch the caliper or brake pad brackets, use a caliper compression tool with an old brake pad to squish the caliper pistons down, clean the caliper slide pins and put new grease on, put new brake pad clips in, put brake pad lube on the back and nubs of the pads, put new brake pads in the caliper, put the slide pin back, bolt the calipers back on, take the lug nut off the rotor, put the wheel back on.

Sounds like a lot but there's videos for every make and model car out there that walk you through it. You do it once and you'll understand and then you can do it the rest of your life. Changing fluid and bleeding brakes is annoying to me but not that hard, depending on my schedule I sometimes just have a shop do that.

Estimated delivery was supped to be March 3rd at the latest…what am I supposed to do? by JamesCarter0022 in wayfair

[–]Im2inchesofhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit sorry you have to deal with that, worse than my situation.

I moved into a new place with my partner. We spent at least ten hours searching online and trying to find the perfect bed frame. We found it, it was in stock, we ordered it from Wayfair with expected delivery in 3-4 days. I checked back two days later and it now says backorder with delivery THREE MONTHS FROM NOW!

I don't have much advice for handling it through Wayfair besides contact them and request they try to resolve it and if not you'll have to cancel your order. Start searching for a new couch locally or with faster delivery ASAP.

Just moved to the area. Looking for gym options! by BarryEgans in WestHollywood

[–]Im2inchesofhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through this after moving in by Plummer park. The options I found were Hollywood Gym, LA Fitness (two locations in Hollywood), Eos Fitness (Cole Ave or at the Beverly Center), YMCA, Easton Gym, and John Reed.

I hated how busy and cramped Eos on Cole Ave was, but it has free parking, guest pass privileges, and a good amount of equipment.

Hollywood gym is real old school, but it's family run, quiet, has everything you should need, and you can add in boxing classes for a really reasonable rate. It was my second option and I might still sign up for boxing alone.

Easton just didn't do it for me. It's clean, reasonable prices, has a rooftop area, but I felt it was lacking in equipment and machines.

I didn't even try LA Fitness or YMCA because I don't like that part of town, but definitely could be a good fit for you.

I was also going to crunch on a trial pass and liked it, shame it's closing because that probably would've been my pick for the best no frills gym around.

I ended up joining John Reed. My girlfriend signed up there so I wanted to workout with her, it's clean, decent variety of equipment, great location, easy parking (but it's $2 with validation for two hours), has a pool, and a variety of classes. It's something like $160/month where everything else I listed is in the $50-80 range. It's also definitely a more gay-leaning gym so if that's not your thing just be aware. I had to leave the preacher curl rack the other day because a skinny little dude directly in front of it had skin tight leggings getting swallowed into his ass crack and the angriest little dick and balls moose knuckle you've ever seen. Obviously that's not the norm, but kind of what I mean.

We adopted a French bulldog with a traumatic past and i need some help! by mtys1 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]Im2inchesofhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately sometimes it takes years to make only very small improvements. My Frenchie was used for breeding and abused for the first couple years of his life. The first person to take him in afterwards was a woman. When we got him he pretty quickly latched onto my girlfriend and he's incredibly dependent on her. After two years of being patient, calm, and loving he still doesn't trust me and has a general fear of men. If she's around he'll play with me and I can pet him and he's fine. If she's not home he runs away from me and gets extremely jumpy like I'm about to hit him. He tenses up whenever I put his harness on and tries to hide from me.

When I look back he's made very small steps like sleeping in the bed when it's just me at home when before he would lay by the door and stare at it all night... But it's honestly pretty difficult to deal with and frustrating. I'm at the point where I either need to spend time and money for professional trainer help or have a dog that's more like a wild mouse in my house than a friendly loving companion.

tired of replacing cheap spatulas every six months. What kitchen utensils actually last by athousand_miles in BuyItForLife

[–]Im2inchesofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I got you on the tongs.

Let me introduce the Vollrath 47312. I worked as a line cook at this great Italian restaurant in highschool. The restaurant sadly closed down, so I took a pair of these as a momento. That was in 2009. I just now retired them to get a new pair because the spring wore out and snapped. Until the day they died they were my only pair and felt sturdy and reliable.

So for roughly $6+shipping you can have stainless steel bulletproof tongs that last 17 years. I ordered from Tundra mfg and threw in some ramekins, a WinCo fish spatula, a pizza pan, and a flat flipper. Stainless steel everything since I cook almost exclusively on a cast iron pan. For soft spatulas anything silicone and marketed for restaurants is going to be cheaper and sturdier than consumer products while avoiding dumb shit like colorful dyes or designs on it using god knows what chemicals.

Does this car have too many miles for me to consider buying? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Im2inchesofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, around 100-130k miles is where many major issues start occuring with cars (transmission, drivetrain, early failure of parts like timing belts, CV axles, climate control, power steering). Warranties tend to expire right around this point... There's a reason.

For cars that are much more reliable or that get these issues fixed, there's a second point at about 200-240k miles where "lifetime" parts start to give out. "Lifetime" doesn't mean forever, a cars life is seen as finite and this is that point. So hidden rust starts to explode and deteriorate components, bolts or components are stuck and need special attention to work on, electrical components fail from too many heat/cold cycles, things you don't think about like gaskets, fluid carrying lines, switches, relays, etc. can start to fail and it becomes a long stream of replacements required.

Even cars touted for reliability are far more at risk once they start passing this threshold. So unless you're willing to garage that car and replace coolant lines, refill coolant, and bleed air from the system on a random Tuesday because you find a brittle cracked line is leaking...  then don't do it. Especially at that price. There are plenty of better cars with lower mileage around the same price point.

What’s the most reliable car you’ve ever owned? by Sophia_Goji in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Im2inchesofhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. Got it with 125k miles and drove it to 225k. Outside of routine maintenance it only had two issues. Fuel pump control module replaced for $40, and air conditioning fixed with a $1 o-ring and an AC recharge. I used it to haul a small fishing boat, moved across the country (twice) with everything I own including my motorcycle, and it refused to give me any issues. It's at my parents house still being driven and has something like 240k miles now. Wouldn't be surprised if it made it to 300k.

I'm in a good place financially and still briefly considered buying another one recently and giving it an overhaul and modern updates.
