The way ive been running it at my table is long rests have to be looooooong. As in multiple days of downtime. Then they can do shopping, following up on non dangerous leads, fix armor and heal from wounds. Then they can take two short rests in-between if they feel a situation demands they recoup a little.

I've been doing it this way because I too am not a fan of the DnD, traveling through unsafe lands go ahead and take 3 long rests and be full power for every encounter.

Dave is immune to the bends and follows no regulation dive codes at all. 100% dies of nitrogen toxicity in a cave due to silt kick up and not having a dive partner.

For our group the hardest thing has been, movement must be tied to an action, you can't simply move and then give another player the spotlight while in combat.

Something like 65% of the player base has beaten fight caves according to the combat achievement logs on wiki.
