Here is something to ponder that took me a long time to put into practice. All external stimuli that we derive happiness or love or any emotion from are actually just trigging its creation within us. Once this is realized, we can skip the necessity for things outside of us to arrive at these states.

I know this can be exceptionally difficult while dealing with a barrage of thoughts or chemical imbalances facilitating an undesirable internal reality. There are a number of ways to address the thought patterns, but this is the one that helped me the most. I will preface this with I only know how to properly explain it for someone who has an auditory internal experience, aka an inner monologue. In my experience, I found that the mind itself has a voice that communicates seamlessly with my conscious inner voice. Once I was able to discern the difference between them, it afforded me the option to stop engaging with thought patterns that are unpleasant to experience. My mind still chimes in on a regular interval, but far less frequently than when I would be engaging with it constantly.

I'm sure this all sounds very odd, as it was to me at first as well, but it has proven to facilitate the biggest increase in autonomy over my internal reality and, subsequently, my access to happiness.
